For voice and piano. Plate number 2148. Jenny Lind was a famous Swedish opera singer nickednamed the Swedish Nightingale. In 1850 she went to America to work with P.T. Barnum a partnership which was fictionalized in the 2017 film The Greatest Showman in which Rebecca Ferguson portrayed Lind and Hugh Jackman portrayed Barnum. Rubbed wear to corners; front and back covers folded cracked and repaired. Numerous autograph emendations in blue pencil and ink; autograph essay in ink on verso of cast listing. In custom quarter morocco slipcase and chemise. First edition. 99 pp. Large 4to. The third consecutive and final Triangle Club production Fitzgerald participated in writing the lyrics for all 18 songs in this 1916 comedy as he had for the two prior shows Fie! Fie! Fi-Fi! 1914-1915 and The Evil Eye 1915-1916.<br /> <br /> This particular staging featured two people with the surname Harris: the first E. Harris was one of the composers and besides the title page this is futher noted by the multiple autograph additions of the letter "E" in blue pencil on the song list page. The second was W. Irving Harris who appeared as "Detective No. 1" a role which was originally printed as being played by E. Harris; this error is corrected in ink.<br /> It was this latter Harris who in 1975 penned the warm unpublished remembrance of Fitzgerald at Princeton on blank page 4 which begins "Scott Fitzgerald of course was in a class by himself." He continues "The lyrics of 'One-Lump Percy' the parlor-snake spoofed the antics of contemporary collegians and for 'Charlotte Corday' Scott should have been given an extra high mark in his course in French history/literature! 'Where Did Bridget Kelly Get Her Persian Temperament' was another song that brought down the house."<br /> <br /> Harris closes with "I remember Scott as exceedingly unassuming and modest and as a member of the Triangle Club a true enthusiast. As far as I know everyone liked him and no one would have thought of competing with his skill as a lyricist. The work was all his - and as you will see speaks for itself." Quarto. 63pp. Stapled unprinted wrappers. Soiling and rubbing to the wrappers and bumping to the corners still a very good copy. Contains 13 numbers for voice and piano plus dialog. Performed at Delmonico's on Monday evening February 28 1916. The operetta's lively introduction states "The Dutch Treat Club on the occasion of its Tenth Annual Explosion presents this operetta of the Loose School. Believe us we had one hell of a time keeping the cast together until to-night! During rehearsals they kept dropping off over the telephone like flies!" The Dutch Treat Club is a New York social club for artists musicians and performers that remains active to this day. The cast for this performance included such figures as August Hutaf John Barnes Wells Howard Chandler Christy Herb Roth Rea Irvin Fontaine Fox and more. OCLC locates only three physical holdings of this piece. NB: The University of Toronto digitized their holding and it includes as a decorative half-title page an image of a painting by James Montgomery Flagg with the same title which according to the website artnet was supposedly painted in 1920 and did not include the title at the top as shown in the UT holding. This copy does not contain this image and it is unclear if it was originally intended to be included. The Dutch Treat Club unknown

A heartbreaking song from the point of view of an Irish mother who is left all alone after her husband dies and her children have moved away the one to whom the song is addressed is in America and the others have joined the war effort. The chorus reads "This token I send you please promise to keep wherever you roam on this earth/'Tis the last bit of turf from the dear cabin hearth from old Erin the place of your birth."
