Lawrence, T[homas] E[dward], British explorer, intelligence officer, and writer (1888-1935).
Autograph letter signed. ("TEShaw"). No place, 2 May 1930.
4to. 1½ pp. To the politician Ernest Thurtle, acknowledging his success in abolishing the British Army's death penalty to punish crimes such as desertion or cowardice: "Then the Lords gave me a fright. Lord Allenby too, whom I like and admire. Surely if I had been in London, able to see him, he would at least have kept silence - if not supported you. Yet doesn't it make you surer you were right, to see all the General Staff opposing you? In the end you downed the Lords, as you had downed the Government. I feel it is a blessed victory. The old state of law hurt me. It was such a damnable judgement upon our own flesh & blood [...] I haven't really said thank you for all you did: because I feel that it was only your duty really. People who care anything at all about their countries don't like to see them fouling themselves [...]". - After over 300 British soldiers had been executed by firing squad following brief trials during World War I, Thurtle had first introduced his measure for the law's abolition in 1924. - A few small marginal tears to the folds.

Lazarus, Gustav, Musiker und Komponist (1861-1920).
Eigenh. Brief mit U. Berlin, 3. V. 1898.
2 SS. 8vo.

MGG VIII, 403f.).

Lazzari, Sylvio, French composer (1857-1944).
Autograph letter signed. Bière, 29. VIII. 1896.
8vo. 1 page. To the cellist and conductor Achille Kerrion (1868-1939), whose success as a director of the orchestra of the 1896 "Exposition du théâtre et de la musique" is discussed even in the most isolated valleys of Switzerland, asking him to play at least a single one of his pieces after learning that he is performing works by Théodor Dubois (1837-1924) and Paul Hillemacher (1852-1933): "Puisque dans les vallons les plus reculés de la Suisse on ne parle plus que des succès du jeune et brillant chef d'orchestre de l'Exposition du Théatre - j'ai nommé Achille Kerrion - et puisque j'ai lu aussi que vous mettez votre talent au service des grands honneurs tels que Dubois, Hillemacher etc., en les festivalant [!], ne pouvriez-vous pas au moins jouer un morceau d'un nommé Lazzari, qui fait aussi un peu de musique dans les moments perdus? Que dites-vous de cette proposition, cher ami? [...]".

Lazzari, Sylvio, French composer (1857-1944).
Autograph letter signed. N. p. o. d.
12mo. 1 p. Charming letter to a close friend named Léo, thanking him for a box in the theatre for Lazzari's visiting parents. While Lazzari agrees to introduce Léo to his parents, he cautions that they are overwhelmed by Paris and that their French is "even more basic" than Lazzari's: "Merci mille fois, j'accepte avec grand plaisir ta loge pour lundi soir. - Born in Bolzano, South Tyrol, Lazzari came to Paris in 1882 to study at the Conservatory under Ernest Guiraud and César Franck. Encouraged by Ernest Chausson and Franck, Lazzari settled in France permanently and obtained French citizenship in 1896. He held several official positions, including president of the Wagner Society (from 1894) and choirmaster at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo. - Minor browning. With collector's notes in pencil.

- Born in Bolzano, South Tyrol, Lazzari came to Paris in 1882 to study at the Conservatory under Ernest Guiraud and César Franck.
In-8°, 2 volumi in uno, XXXIV, (2), pp. 240, 2 carte di tav. ripiegate, pp241-575 (1), legatura in mezza pelle con titolo al dorso in oro. Intonso. In-8 °, 2 volumes in one, XXXIV, (2), pp. 240, 2 folded leafs; pp241-575 (1), half leather binding with title at the spine in gold. Uncut. Professor of liturgy at the Gregorian University, Lazzarini composed this work for pleasure, but it still resulted in a treatise of great completeness and erudition, going to look for who was the first inventor to use the Tintinnabula and what use was made of them in clothes and liturgies among the most ancient peoples.

Le Borne, Fernand, Belgian composer and music critic (1862-1929).
Autograph letter signed. N. p. o. d.
8vo. 1 p. on bifolium. To a music publisher concerning a possible meeting with his teacher Camille Saint-Saëns and some unfinished articles: "Saint-Saëns est à Toulouse. - Fernand Le Borne is largely forgotten as a composer but merits a place in the annals of film history as the first composer to write an original score for "L'Empreinte ou la Main rouge" in 1908. The film premiered together with the better known "L'assassinat du duc de Guise" to an original score by Camille Saint-Saëns. The two men, student and teacher, thus share the distinction of this extraordinary first. - With minimal foxing.

Autograph correspondence card signed. Chaville, no date.
Oblong 12mo. 2 pp. To the cellist and conductor Achille Kerrion (1868-1939) with thanks for his flattering offer to conduct one of his works, suggesting to meet in Paris the following day, as he has been working out of town for a couple of months and is unable to visit him immediately, and expressing his hope that Kerrion's sister, the singer Stéphanie Kerrion, might perform his piece: "La perspective d'être joué [...] d'un musicien tel que vous m'est on ne peut plus agréable et très honoré de votre flatteuse demande, je vous en remercie bien sincèrement. - A strip of paper pasted on upper margin, covering a few words of the first line; small crease to lower left corner; the verso a little brownstained.

8vo. 2 pp. on bifolium. With autograph address verso. To the Polish pianist and composer Anton de Kontski (1816-99) in Paris, about his enquiry at the Salle du Conservatoire, which is occupied by the Societé des Concerts until 15 April for their concerts, pointing out that in order to obtain the location prior to that date it would be necessary to write to François-Antoine Habeneck (1781-1849), the president of the society, who will submit the request to the society to decide, mentioning that fixing any other date should not be a problem due to the performing artist's distinguished talent and position; concluding with advice against visiting him, as he leaves the house before 8 o'clock, and announcing to come to de Kontski's place instead: "Le lendemain du Jour où j'ai eu le plaisir de vous rencontrer chez Mr Erand, j'ai fait, cher Monsieur, la Démarche relative à la Salle du Conservatoire. - With former collector's number 67 in pencil. Traces of former mounting on reverse. Slightly creased.
