Zu seinen Werken zählen sechs Opern, fünf Sinfonien, ein Klavier- und zwei Violinkonzerte, Streichquartette, Sonaten für Violine und Klavier, Klavierstücke und -etüden und mehr als einhundert Lieder.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY ARABELLA GODDARD TO CHARLES HALLE.
London: July 1st. circa 1865. 1865. Very good. - 30 words penned in black ink on 2 sides of a 4-sided sheet of cream stock with a half-inch black border on the first side. Signed "Yrs. very truly / Arabella Goddard". There is a light glue mark along the top of the third blank side & the 4th side is lightly soiled with remnants of gray paper adhering to its right margin where the letter has been removed from an album. Folded once for mailing. Accompanied by a black-and white steel engraved portrait of Goddard dressed in a crinoline & lace shawl. Very good. <p>This condolence letter represents a wonderful association. It is addressed to Charles Halle 1819-1895 pianist and founder of the Halle Orchestra who played a series of piano concerts known as "Monday Populars" with Arabella Goddard. A note at the foot of the letter in another hand indicates that Goddard is responding to a request concerning "a testimonial fund". "Dear Mr. Charles Halle / Your letter has grieved me more than I can say I hasten to enclose a cheque for the services with heartfelt sympathy."<p>Arabella Goddard was an English concert pianist who achieved great fame in the second half of the nineteenth century. She was tutored by James William Davison the influential but strictly conservative music critic for "The Times" whom she later married. She made her debut in 1853 playing Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" Sonata--the first time the work had been performed in England. In 1857 and 1858 she played all the late Beethoven sonatas in London most of which were still unknown to her audiences. She toured extensively retiring from performing in 1880. In französischer Sprache an einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten mit der Mitteilung, daß der "danse de sylphes" zu lange für ein Konzert sei. - Der aus Namur stammende Künstler bereiste auf Konzertreisen ganz Europa und ließ sich 1847 ließ in Paris nieder. Als Komponist schrieb er Werke für Harfe und Klavier, darunter mehrere Messen und die beiden Opern "La Harpe d'or" und "La Fille de Saül". "Sein Lehrwerk 'Mes exercices pour la harpe', wurde von mehreren Generationen Harfen-Schülern als Standardwerk gebraucht" (Wikipedia).

Möge die Musik der 'Camilla' Ihne[n] dafür beredte Kunde geben, deren Klänge einst vom Meister Liszt als 'merkwürdig echt italienisch' empfunden und bezeichnet worden sind [... folgt ein kleines Notenbeispiel]. Die natürlich-einfache Melodienfülle des drolligen Werkchens fand im fein-natürlich empfindenden Ohre des Meisters einen Wiederklang aus seiner vergangenen Jugendzeit, was er mir mehr als einmal betheuerte. Die Gesänge und Duette der Camilla und des [Sarastro?] waren Lieblingsstücke von ihm, die ich damals (noch in Skizzen) ihm sehr oft spielen (und singen lassen) mußte. Kopf, denn die Oper ist aus der Stunde heraus geboren [...]". - Karl Eduard Goepfart war u. a. Klavierschüler von Franz Liszt gewesen und wirkte später als Kapellmeister am Hoftheater Weimar. Nach mehrjähriger Konzerttätigkeit wurde er musikalischer Begleiter des Landgrafen Alexander Friedrich von Hessen, lebte von 1902 bis 1909 als Komponist und Chordirigent in Weimar und Berlin und ließ sich anschließend als freischaffender Komponist in Potsdam, 1928 in Weimar nieder. Er komponierte Orchester- und Chorwerke ("Am Chiemsee"), Kammermusik und Opern ("Der Müller von Sanssouci"). - Eine Ecke etwas geknickt und leicht eingerissen; 1 Bl. gelocht.

Das Gleiche mit Neumann, der meine beiden Opern schon längst kennt und gedruckt bekommen hat [...]". - Karl Eduard Goepfart war u. a. (1+1 =) 2 SS. auf 2 Bll. Folio (223:282 und 221:282 mm). Davon ein Albumblatt mit gedruckter Bordüre und gedr. Fußzeile "Beitrag zum Selbstschriftenalbum 'Deutschlands Zukunft'", aufgezogen auf einen Bogen Pergamentpapier (ca. 330:344 mm). Mit einem Zitat: "Viel lieber in Deutschland Schmach und Not, / als in der Fremde weißes Brot. / Ich müßte zehnmal zu Grunde gehn / und würde zehnmal auferstehn, / ich riefe von Frischem allsogleich: / Gott segne, Gott schütze das deutsche Reich! / ('Legende', von Prinz Emil v. Schönaich-Carolath.) [...]". Goepfart wünscht dem Herausgeber im Begleitschreiben einen Publikationserfolg und erwähnt mitgesandte Musikpartituren: "In Erfüllung Ihrer Bitte sende ich Ihnen inl. das Gewünschte [...] Die beifolgenden Chorpartituren wollen Sie in Ihnen dafür geeignet erscheinende beste Hände legen, zur Verlebendigung [...]" (10. VII. 1928). Geschrieben als Beitrag für die von Friedrich Koslowsky im Berliner Eigenbrödler-Verlag herausgegebene Faksimile-Anthologie "Deutschlands Köpfe der Gegenwart über Deutschlands Zukunft" (1928), jedoch darin nicht aufgenommen. Karl Goepfart lebte und arbeitet von 1909 bis 1927 in Potsdam. - Der Brief mit gedr. Briefkopf und einer Auflistung der "Concert-Statistik 1914".
