Goyescas: An Opera in Three Tableaux
New York London Boston: G. Schirmer 1915. Apparent 1st ed. with Johnson translation no later printing information. Paperback. Very Good. 165p. Softcover in original wrapper. Illustration mounted on front. 31cm. Vover illustration scuffed with some crease marks. Backstrip chipped at bottom and appears to have been reglued for four or five centimeters above above the chipping. Tape mark next to bottom of backstrip on both sides. Contents sound and clean. Johnson had great success as a lyricist early in the century but found chamged tastes when he attempted a return to song-writing in 1914. He did successfully translate the libretto for this opera which the Metropolitan Opera performed in 1916. Granados the Spanish Romantic composer of the piano pieces from which this opera was adapted attended the premiere but drowned in the English channel upon his return to Europe when a German submarine torpedoed the boat on which Granados was travelling. The libretto appears throughout the music in this edition with Granados's Spanish text immediately above Johnson's English translation. The libretto was also published separately by Schirmer in 1915 as a smaller-format 42-page pamphlet in their series of opera-librettos with Granados's Spanish text and Johnson's English translation appearing side by side in separate columns. We don't know whether either version has publishing priority but both are quite uncommon. G. Schirmer paperback

Les répétitions des choeurs ont pris les parties de façon qu'on n'a pu recopier avant aujourd'hui, c'est ce qui fait qu'à mon grand ennui, je ne vous enverrai que ce soir la vôtre. Ayez la bonté malgré cela Madame d'assister à la répétition de demain: les choeurs seront très bien et si vous n'avez pas le temps de regarder avant, vous aurez en tout cas idée de l'ensemble de l'ouvrage, et grande musicienne comme vous êtes, vous savrez la partie en entendant la musique [...]". - On stationery with engraved arms. L'autobiografia di Stéphane Grappelli, scritta con l'aiuto di Joseph Oldhenove e Jean-Marc Bramy che del Maestro e dell'amico hanno sollecitato e raccolto le memorie, nella edizione francese si intitola letteralmente: "in viaggio solo con il mio violino per bagaglio"; e, in effetti, è una storia di viaggi, di concerti tenuti in ogni parte del mondo, di incontri, tutti rievocati con la misura dell'affetto e della nostalgia, in cui non trovano spazio e peso né giudizi brucianti né rivelazioni sconcertanti. Il tratto del garbo, della mitezza, della buona educazione ne sono la cifra più marcata che rivela un'attitudine della vita. È anche, però, il racconto di una solitudine di cui il violino diventa l'emblema, oltre che un permanente tentativo di riscatto. L'itinerante compagno di un ragazzo povero che, diventato adulto e famoso, cerca le sue radici per non perdersi, per comprendersi. E le rintraccia in una periferia della provincia italiana - ad Alatri, pochi chilometri da Frosinone, da dove suo padre era emigrato per la Francia - dentro una torre che, forse per caso, porta il suo nome, pur depurato della i finale francesizzata da un accento, spia della sua emigrazione e segno identitario, ridotto al grado zero, di un artistico vagabondaggio. Radici ben piantate in un giardino che adesso conserva - e sarà così per sempre - l'ultimo, resistente, sbriciolato sedimento materiale della sua anima.
