There is some soiling to the blank endpapers else the contents are clean and in very good condition. <p>This volume includes the programs for 24 concerts from October 10 1913 through May 2 1914 with historical and descriptive notes throughout by Philip Hale. The volume includes 19 pages of highly useful indexes and summaries at the end. Karl Muck was music director. Among the soloists featured in these concerts were pianists Harold Bauer Teresa Carreno Ruth Deyo Josef Hofmann and Ignace Jan Paderewski. Singers included Elisabeth van Endert Geraldine Farrar and Louise Homer. Violinists who performed as soloists included Carl Flesch Sylvain Noak Anton Witek and Fritz Kreisler. The joints are split and the leather is heavily rubbed with the front cover nearly detached. The contents consist of 1508 consecutively numbered pages. A number of pictorial black-and-white ads are included; however the 14-16 pages of ads at the end of each program were not bound in. There is some soiling to the blank endpapers else the contents are clean and in very good condition. <p>Karl Muck was the music director until the end of March 1918. He was arrested around midnight on March 25. He was falsely accused of refusing to perform the Star Spangled Banner after the entry of the US into World War 1. He and his wife were imprisoned until August 21 1919 and were then deported. When Karl Muck was arrested as an "enemy alien" Ernst Schmidt became the temporary conductor for the remainder of the season. Ernst Schmidt was a first violin of the Boston Symphony for four seasons 1914-1918 and he was conductor of the Boston Pops in the 1915 summer Pops season. He was also an active composer.<p>This volume includes the programs for 24 concerts from October 12 1917 through May 4 1918 with historical and descriptive notes throughout by Philip Hale. The volume includes 19 pages of highly useful indexes and summaries at the end. Among the soloists featured in these concerts were pianists Ethel Leginska Frances Nash Guiomar Novaes and Ossip Gabrilowitsch. Singers included Mabel Garrison Nellie Melba and John McCormack. Violinists who performed as soloists included Irma Seydel Sylvain Noak Anton Witek and Efrem Zimbalist. Singers included Merle Alcock Sophie Braslau Florence Easton Mabel Garrison Emilio De Gogorza Arthur Hackett Olive Kline and Reinald Werrenrath. Cellists included Joseph Malkin. Violinists who performed as soloists included Fredric Fradkin Jacques Thibaud and Jascha Heifetz. Heifetz made his first appearance in Boston in 1918. He gave recitals on March 17 31 and November 3. He appeared with the Boston Symphony Orchestra on January 3rd and 4th 1919 performing Beethoven's Violin Concerto. The season included the world premiere of Raoul Laparra's "A Basque Sunday for orchestra and pianoforte". Laparra was the piano soloist in his own work. But this song about a mother watching her child pass away in the middle of the night before succumbing to her own bleak fate isn't quite as cheerful. OCLC locates nine holdings of this 1847 edition. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo. Wohl an Ferdinand Avenarius, den Herausgeber des "Kunstwart": "Anläßlich der 10jährigen Wiederkehr des Todestags C. F. Meyers hatten Sie im letzten Kunstwart eine Besprechung einzelner Transpositionen von Gedichten Meyers. Fräulein Elisabeth Wolff, die vor einigen Jahren Gesellschafterin auf dem Gute des Barons Mladota in der Nähe Prags war, sagte mir, daß sie Ihnen mehrere meiner Lieder gebracht und Sie freundliches Interesse daran genommen hätten. Darf ich Sie heute darauf aufmerksam machen daß ich 16 Gedichte von C. F. Meyer komponirt habe, von welchen 10 dem Meister selbst gewidmet sind. Es wäre für mich eine große Auszeichnung wenn Sie es jetzt noch möglich machen könnten, in einem der nächsten Kunstwarthefte ein oder das andere Lied abzudrucken. Ich darf noch erwähnen, daß meine Lieder wiederholt von Wüllner, Ludwig Hess, Frau Metzger-Froitzheim u. A. mit Erfolg gesungen wurden [...]". - Ehedem Absolvent der Musikhochschule München, war Hallwachs zunächst als Chordirigent in Darmstadt tätig, dann als Kapellmeister und Korrepetitor in Wiesbaden und kam 1899 als Theaterkapellmeister nach Aachen. "Im folgenden Jahr wurde er Musikdirektor in Saarbrücken, 1902 in Kassel Dirigent des Oratorienvereins und der Liedertafel sowie Seminarleiter am Konservatorium. 1911 erfolgte die Ernennung zum kgl. Musikdirektor. Hallwachs komponierte Opern (u. a. 'Ramaka'), Chorwerke, Lieder und Klaviersonaten" (DBE).

An den Pianisten und Komponisten Sigismund Thalberg (1812-71), der sich auf Konzertreise in England befindet: "Ich hatte mich so sehr darauf gefreut Sie hier in Manchester begrüßen zu können, u. nun muß ich leider nächsten Montag die Monday Popular Concerts in London eröffnen helfen u. werde Sie deshalb zu meinem großen Bedauern verfehlen; ich hoffe jedoch, daß Sie sich veranlaßt fühlen werden unserer Stadt einen zweiten Besuch zu machen u. es sich dann glücklicher für mich treffen wird. Meine Familie wird jedoch auch nächsten Montag hier sein, u. ich würde Ihnen wirklich danken wenn Sie einige Plätze zu unserer Disposition stellen wollten, denn meine Kinder haben Sie noch nie gehört [...]". - Der aus Hagen (Westfalen) stammende Pianist lebte von 1836 bis 1848 in Paris, wo er u. a. mit Chopin, Liszt, Berlioz, Wagner, Cherubini sowie mit Alfred de Musset und George Sand befreundet bzw. bekannt war, und übersiedelte anschließend nach London. In England war er der "erste Pianist, der [...] das gesamte Werk der Klaviersonaten von Beethoven beherrschte. Erst durch Hallé wurde Beethoven allgemein bekannt in der englischen Gesellschaft. Bei der 'Musical Union' [...] und bei den 'Popular Concerts' wirkte Hallé regelmäßig mit und ab 1853 wurde er Leiter der 'Gentlemen's Concerts' in Manchester" (Wikipedia). 1888 wurde er für seine Verdienste um das englische Musikleben zum Ritter geschlagen; seine zweite Ehefrau war die Violinistin Wilma Norman-Neruda, "eine der führenden Solo-Violinistinnen der Zeit, die Vergleichen mit Männern stand hielt und 1901 von Königin Alexandra den Titel Violinistin der Königin verliehen bekam" (ebd.). - Mit Stempel der Handschriftensammlung J.
