Wenn ich nicht näher darauf eingehe u. es Ihnen beifolgend wieder zusende, so geschieht dies hauptsächlich weil ich mit einer Arbeit beschäftigt bin, welche mich noch Jahr u. Tag in Anspruch nimmt. Auf so weit hin wird es mir aber unmöglich mir u. vollends einem Autor gegenüber irgend eine künstlerische Verpflichtung zu übernehmen - es bleibt mir daher nur übrig Ihrem Werk einen guten Komponisten zu wünschen [...]". - Ferdinand von Hiller war ab 1850 Stadtkapellmeister in Köln, wo er zudem bis 1884 dem Konservatorium vorstand.

An den Komponisten Ernst Seyffardt (1859-1942), damals Student in Köln, über dessen Erstlingswerk: "[...] Ihre Sonate ist ein ganz ehrenwerthes Stück, dennoch hätte ich gewünscht, Sie mit etwas Frischerem, Zugänglichem in die Oeffentlichkeit treten zu sehen. Sie haben hier Sachen geschrieben in welchen mehr Zug u. lebendigere Erfindung war. Es wundert mich nicht daß Sie die Zeichen ausgedehnten Studiums noch nicht abgeschüttelt - aber es ist keine Frage daß man sie dieser Composition anmerkt. Dabei ist sie sehr breit gehalten, ziemlich schwer - u. ich frage mich wer sie etwa spielen möge. Für Sie ist es aber wichtig, daß ein Opus I wenigstens einen gewissen Kreis finde, wenn es auch noch kein großer sein wird u. sein kann. [James] Kwast [Pianist; 1851-1927], der die Sonate auch durchspielte [...] findet allzu große Spuren darin der Vertiefung in Brahms letzte Sonate mit Violine. Das wäre mir gleichgiltig - wenn ich sie ansprechender, conciser und frappanter fände [...]" - Kwast war 1883-1903 Lehrer für Klavierspiel am Hochschen Konservatorium in Frankfurt amMain. Er war in erster Ehe mit Hillers Tochter Antonie verheiratet.

1983. Very Rare Title - This is a 1983 2nd edition revised from a 1977 hardcover edition which included two additional co-authors: Tony Manno who died before publication of the book and Mancel Warrick father of Dionne and Dee Dee who died in 1977 after the publication of the first edition. It appears to be a Private Press publication. 8vo size stapled binding with inside covers the equivalent of dust jacket flaps; 101 pages with many pages of sheet music. The author and previous co-authors appear in photographs on inside back cover. Author photograph and biography are on back cover. From inside front cover: "This book discusses the history and musical forms of gospel music beginning with the spirituals of slave days and branching out into folksongs jubilees hymns anthems and other forms which culminate in the religious gospel and pop-gospel music known today. It deals in depth with the techniques of all these musicological forms and provides numerous examples of each including the transformation of one form to another." Book is slightly bowed from poor storage but may flatten under the weight of a very heavy book. Top of covers are lightly sunned and there is light soil on front cover. We note ink underlining on pages 6 31 34 and 36 brackets on page 24 and one creased page corner. Lightly bumped top back corner and last 20 or so pages. . 2nd. Stapled.
