Alfred Edward Housman was a celebrated English scholar and poet but less well known is the English composer and philanthropist Graham Peel. Peel's obituary in The Newcastle Sun mentions this composition by name calling it "one of his most successful songs" and goes on to say that his charity work was "of an unobtrusive character and there are hundreds of poor people who will remember his kindness and gratitude" closing with the statement "He was one of the first to take parties inside prisons to entertain the inmates. Bound in contemporary red straight-grain morocco with gold and blind tooling on both boards spine edges and turn-ins marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Owner’s name “George Houstoun†stamped in gold on front pastedown and written in manuscript on the front free endpaper verso dated March 20 1834. Some darkening and modest wear to the edges of the boards front board bowing slightly very good.<br /> <br /> An unusual manuscript collection of early 19th century Spanish romantic and bolero songs. Though not titled the first work in the volume is La Suplica the sixth in a cycle of six songs composed by Manuel Rücker first published in Madrid in 1820. Also included is a song from the opera Ricardo Corazón de León and various “Bolerosâ€. The undated manuscript was written out on early wove paper that could predate the binding by as much as ten or more years. <br /> <br /> Bound in a handsome morocco binding for George Houstoun who very likely was related to the famous 18th century Georgia planter and statesman William Houstoun delegate to the Continental Congress from the Province of Georgia.<br /> <br /> A unique music manuscript with an intriguing provenance warranting full scholarly research. hardcover

1929. 1929. Good. - Quarto 14 inches high by 11 inches wide. Self-wraps 5 pages of music & lyrics printed on one side only of 5 sheets of G. Schirmer Inc. music paper. The pages have been bound together with early linen tape along the spine and the sheets have been taped together back to back with linen tape at the corners. The pages are soiled and the edges creased. Good. <p>The American composer and pianist Mary Howe 1882-1964 took private lessons with the accomplished pianist Hermione Seron before pursuing further studies at Baltimore's Peabody Institute. She studied piano under and Richard Burmeister and also pursued studies in composition with Gustav Strube Ernest Hutcheson and Harold Randolph. Howe traveled to Paris in 1933 to continue her studies with Nadia Boulanger. With her friend Anne Hull she performed "Mozart's Concerto for Two Pianos" and other works but she preferred composition. Influenced by neo-romanticism and modernism she first composed for the piano but soon moved on to composing orchestral works inspired by nature and American themes. Among her works were "Sand Stars Rock Three Pieces after Emily Dickinson" and "Chain Gang Song" a composition for orchestra and chorus which was praised at the time for its lack of "femininity". Developing a passion for singing she incorporated texts by William Blake into the powerful works she composed in support of the troops fighting in the Second World War. Her numerous compositions include the choral works "Catalina" "Chain Gang Song" "Robin Hood's Heart" "Williamsburg Sunday" "Great Land of Mine" and songs such as "Old English Lullaby" "Somewhere in France" "Cossack Cradle Song" "Berceuse" "The Lake Isle of Innisfree" "To the Unknown Soldier" "O Proserpina" and much more. "Castellana" for 2 pianos and orchestra "Dirge" "Axiom" "American Piece" "Coulenned" "Potomac River" "Paean" represent some of her several orchestral compositions. [1929]. paperback
