ill., br. Nel novembre 1838 da una cella della certosa abbandonata di Valldemossa, fra le montagne che circondano Palma di Maiorca, si diffondono le note di un «pianino». Non sono note qualsiasi: sono quelle che completeranno i ventiquattro Preludi di Frédéric Chopin, opera cardine del Romanticismo. Non è stato possibile trovare uno strumento migliore sull'isola, ma quel piccolo pianoforte, costruito da un artigiano locale, fatto di legno dolce, ferro, rame, feltro e avorio, avrà una grande vita. Abbandonato nella cella di Chopin per oltre settant'anni, acquistato nel 1913 da una donna intelligente e tenace - «una vecchia ebrea, pazza per la musica», come lei stessa si definiva -, la pianista e clavicembalista Wanda Landowska, il pianino viene confiscato dai nazisti, determinati ad appropriarsi del prestigio che Chopin e la sua musica rappresentano. Ma questa non è che una delle tante storie racchiuse nel Pianoforte di Chopin, insieme a quella di Chopin e George Sand, a quella di Wanda Landowska, a quella collettiva dell'Europa e degli Stati Uniti durante gli anni centrali del secolo scorso. Ma, soprattutto, insieme alla storia dei Preludi, narrata attraverso gli strumenti su cui sono stati eseguiti e i pianisti che li hanno interpretati. Paul Kildea ci racconta come quel modesto pianino abbia influenzato il suono anticonvenzionale e rivoluzionario dei Preludi, che non sfuggì a Schumann, a Liszt, ad Arthur Rubinstein, a Svjatoslav Richter. E che Kildea ci restituisce, pagina dopo pagina, nella più coinvolgente delle narrazioni.

Her composition "Women's Triumphal March" became the official song of the General Federation of Women's Clubs and her musical setting "The Rose is Red" set to a poem by Daniel A. The headline of her New York Times obituary identifies her as "Mother of War Poet" later describing her creative work "A talented musician Mrs. Kilmer set several of her son's poems to music. She also is the author of several books including Memories of My Son Joyce Kilmer Whimsies and More Whimsies."
