LONGFELLOW, Henry W, poetry by, and SJ Chapman, music by S J
Sheet music: The Brides Departure: A Ballad
New York: Millet's Music Saloon 1850. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. Folio. 6pp. Illustrated wrappers. Foxing and offsetting throughout the front wrapper partially detached towards the top of the spine notches in the spine from once being bound within an album still very good. For voice and piano. "Composed & Respectfully Dedicated to Miss Julia A. Buel." We found another version of this song titled "Brother Speak in Whispers Light Or The Brides Departure" published by A. & J.P. Ordway in Boston also in 1850 but the words are credited to Capt. Patten U.S.A. with music by Bernard Covert. This copy credited to Longfellow has a fourth verse not present in the Capt. Patten version. Stranger still we could not find these lyrics within any of Longfellow's writings. OCLC does not locate any holdings of this piece credited to Longfellow and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade. A fascinating musical mystery. Millet's Music Saloon unknown

LONGFELLOW, Henry Wadsworth, words by, and J Edgar Gould, music by
Sheet music: Resignation With or Without the Aeolian Piano
Boston: Oliver Ditson 1850. Softcover. Very Good. Presumably the first edition. Folio. Single bifolium with a single-sheet-insert making six pages. Notched and worn along the spine from once being bound within an album as a result the insert remains bound to the bifolium light foxing and offsetting throughout and some soiling to the exterior still a very good and complete copy. For voice and piano. Plate number 1914. The front cover states "A song with or without the Aeolian piano" which is quite confusing as the Aeolian Company which specialized in player pianos was not established until 1887. We cannot find any reference to an "Aeolian piano" not associated with the company though there is an Aeolian mode in music and while there is a small chance that this is a much later printing with the original copyright date of 1850 the printed address does not match such a timeline as Oliver Ditson was housed at 115 Washington St. from 1844 to 1857 according to the Handbook of Early American Sheet Music Dichter and Shapiro. So needless to say if you were playing this piece in 1850 it would certainly be without an Aeolian piano. Or perhaps it's a suggestion for the pianist to play the piece in a manner intended to imitate the sound of an aeolian harp. A curious piece. Oliver Ditson unknown

LONGFELLOW, Henry Wadsworth, words by, and Miss R May Hall, music by
Sheet music: Allah
Boston: Oliver Ditson Company 1891. Softcover. Very Good. Presumably the first and only edition. Folio. Single bifolium with a single-sheet-insert making six pages. Some light edgewear light offsetting throughout and light soiling to the exterior still a very good and complete copy. For voice contralto and piano. Plate number 33-55330-3. A few composers have set this poem by Longfellow to music but this version by Miss. R. May Hall appears to be quite rare it is unrecorded by OCLC and equally scarce in the trade. Furthermore we cannot locate any other compositions by Hall. The only information we can find regarding Hall is on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library website which states that Hall married a Mr. Harry Lockwood in 1890 in Charlotte Mecklenburg County North Carolina. While it was not uncommon for an amateur composer to release their own composition to a popular poem this was published by one of the biggest music publishing houses in America at the time and yet it appears to be as scarce as so many self-published pieces forgotten to obscurity. Though it should be noted that the front cover states "Published for the author by Oliver Ditson Company" so perhaps it was a very limited run. This is the only Oliver Ditson publication we have seen with this distinction. A rare and intriguing piece. Oliver Ditson Company unknown
