Today if I don't move any error is the foundation of grace in salvationâ€<br> <br> The Histadrut Third Seder was a public communal event organized by the American Histadrut the Israel labor federation that took place annually in the United States particularly in New York City for several decades. It was a secular Yiddish cultural alternative to traditional Passover seders using the Seder structure to commemorate events in Jewish history often focusing on the 20th-century return of Jews to Israel and the founding of Histadrut itself. <br> <br> The Third Seder was an American secular and politically motivated interpretation of the Passover Seder tradition particularly associated with the Labor Zionist movement and institutions like Farband. Evolved from earlier educational models these public events combined Passover's themes of freedom and social justice with socialist ideals and support for Histadrut in Eretz Israel. NCLI also aimed to strengthen ties between American and Israeli labor sectors and promote public support for Labor Israel. The committee eventually faced financial difficulties and dissolved. <br> “NCLI was headquartered in New York City and oversaw regional fundraising offices in other cities such as Boston Chicago Cleveland Detroit Los Angeles Miami and Philadelphia…. <br> In spite of their close association the relationship between NCLI and the Histadrut was complicated….The labor involved in cataloging and assigning thousands of sponsorship opportunities transmitting monies between countries producing evidence of ongoing projects and attaching the correct names and acknowledgments to finished projects was considerable—especially in light of the fact that the organizations operated in different languages in a mostly pre-computer workplace. Remarkable late 19th-century Albumen photograph depicting a large racially integrated music ensemble and social gathering posed outside a clapboard-sided rural building likely a church or schoolhouse in the American South or border states. Cabinet card photograph. Albumen print mounted on heavy cardstock. Circa 1880s-1890s. Measures 8.5" x 6.5". The group includes an African American man with a guitar two men possibly of mixed or Latino descent with an accordion and another with a trumpet. The multi-racial group is underscored by the presence of two African American women in white cotton dresses standing near the rear door wearing common attire for rural working-class women of the time. This integrated gathering situates this photograph in the broader history of multi-ethnic labor communities in the post-Reconstruction South. This photograph captures a rarely documented moment of interracial leisure and cultural expression in the 19th century challenging dominant visual narratives of rigid racial separation. The array of stringed and folk instruments including guitar violin and accordion suggests a vernacular musical tradition drawing from Black white and possibly Latino idioms-potentially embodying the creolized roots of American folk and blues. The informality of the setting and the positioning of the figures-seated on the ground and porch steps-convey a shared sense of camaraderie and musical celebration. Photograph is in very good condition with strong contrast and fine detail. Mount shows light age toning and minor corner wear. An extraordinary and unusually inclusive document of 19th-century American musical culture visualizing interracial social life and artistic collaboration before the codification of Jim Crow segregation. unknown

Silk endpapers. - Includes 4 ff. of letters and album leaves by Pope Pius IX (with autogr. date and signature) and the Societé des gens de lettres (copy with facsimile signatures by Georges Sand, Victor Hugo, Ludovic Halévy, Champfleury, Jules Claretie, etc.), as well as by 2 unidentified writers. <p>Philadelphia.1873. “Printed at ye Printing House of Henri B. Ashmeade wh is sette down on Sansome St.†Concert Program. 4pp. Bifolium of vegetable parchment paper partly untrimmed. 8½ x 7¼ inches. Annotated in pencil in the top margin: “Concert given by ‘old folks’ at Academy of Musick April 7th 1873.†Folds; minor loss at tail of spine; very good.</p> <p>Delightfully humorous program for a concert of antique music performed at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. Likely getting into the spirit of the nation’s impending 1876 Centennial celebration the producers deliberately created the musical program and its printed program in an old-fashioned style.</p> <p>Although not a parody the printed program’s humor derives from a somewhat over wrought interpretation of “ye olde Englishe†style of writing. Its general layout typography generous use of long “Sâ€s orthography numerous superscripted letters to make abbreviations and Old English spelling suffixes etc. and the use of vegetable parchment to simulate antique animal parchment all lend to the tongue-in-cheek effect.</p> <p>Annotated in pencil in the top margin of the first page is this note: “Concert given by ‘old folks’ at Academy of Musick April 71873.†Even the annotator got into the parody spirit by spelling “music†with a “k†at the end!</p> <p>Some examples from the text of the program:</p> <p>"Forasmuch as Dyvers Syngynge People bothe menne & womenne have of late been attunynge theyre voyces unto harmonie & forasmuch as ye knowledge thereof hath come to certayne of ye townspeople of Phyladelphya…they wyll dyscourse accordynge unto certayne sette Tunes dyvers Psalms & Hymns & Spirituall Songes…<br /> Yt ths taxxe wh hath beene fixxede at ye rate of SIXXE 6 Shillynges currency ¾ of a Dollar per capita canne br payde att ye shoppe on ye Chestnitte Streete whre Jonathan Gouldde & hys younge partnere dispenseth Harpsichorddes Spinnets Dulcimeres & Tune-bookes.<br /> N. It included sacred and secular music most accompanied by solo singers or an ensemble or chorus as well as a rendition of an 18th century symphony attributed to Joseph “Papa†Haydn seen here as “Feytherre Haydn†—“Ye Chyldrenne’s Symfonye†Kindersinfonie.</p> <p>Songs performed include “Auld Lang Syne By alle ye Synggers†“Ye Evils of Procrastynatynonne By Gaffer Rawlungges†“Sherbourne By alle ye menne & wommyne at once†and “Ye Old Hundredthe.â€</p> <p>Except for the pencil annotation the program does not refer to Philadelphia’s Academy of Music which despite its name never had a school. Instead it refers to the concert venue as “Ye Schoole of Musick.†Perhaps “Academy†was not Anglo-Saxon enough for the parodists</p> unknown

Indianapolis: Isaac Doles 1891. First edition. Large format sheet music 13.5x11" 5pp including printed inner-rear wrapper. Small "testimonial" review of another of Dole's works tipped in at inner front wrapper likely as issued. Paper wraps illustrated and lettered in blue with several pieces available from the composer listed on the rear. Few edge tears splitting to spine and some soiling else a very good example. <br /> <br /> Very rare 19th century sheet music by songwriter composer and organist from Indianapolis Isaac Doles 1853-1927. Doles published several songs and even republished a few with modifications mostly on local subject matter. This piece takes its name from the newly invented aerial machine:<br /> <br /> "The air ship may prove to be a failure but 'The Air Ship Waltz' is destined to be a grand success."<br /> <br /> <br /> OCLC cites holdings at the Smithsonian Indiana Michigan and Baylor Universities. . Chicago: Martin Studio of Music 1944. Good. 4pp. on a single folded sheet. Heavy vertical crease moderate soiling and staining a few short closed tears bottom edge of first leaf trimmed close affecting a few words in the address of the publisher. Rare sheet music for the hymn "He Will Carry You through" by R.H. Palmer as arranged by legendary gospel music publisher Roberta Martin owner of Chicago's Martin Studio of Music. The front cover pictures Eugene Smith who apparently performed the song regularly and to some renown. The inner two pages print the sheet music and the final leaf prints a catalogue of Martin's other available sheet music. A much-condensed version of Roberta Martin's biography on the Encyclopedia of Arkansas reads as follows:<br /> <br /> "Roberta Evelyn Winston Martin Austin was one of the most significant figures during gospel music’s golden age 1945-1960. A performer and publisher she reached iconic status in Chicago Illinois where she influenced numerous artists such as Alex Bradford James Cleveland and Albertina Walker and had an impact on an entire industry with her innovation and business acumen. In 1932 Martin joined Thomas Dorsey and Theodore Frye’s Chicago-based Young People’s Choir and was eventually employed as the choir’s pianist. A 1933 concert featuring the Bertha Wise Quartet led Martin to develop a new style of her own. That same year Martin and Frye founded the Martin-Frye Quartet. Later renamed the Roberta Martin Singers the group’s early members included Robert Anderson James Lawrence Norsalus McKissick Eugene Smith Romance Watson and Willie Webb. Martin accompanied the group as pianist but also sang the occasional solo. The Roberta Martin Singers were a hit in the 1940s and 1950s recording for the Apollo and Savoy record labels and earning several gold records. In the early 1940s female voices -- namely those of Bessie Folk and Delois Barrett -- were added. In 1939 Martin established her Roberta Martin Studio of Music a Chicago-based gospel music publishing house which distributed her compositions as well as those of James Cleveland Dorothy Norwood and Alex Bradford. Martin was honored posthumously by the Smithsonian Institution in 1981 with a colloquium and by the U.S. Postal Service on July 15 1998 with a commemorative postage stamp."<br /> <br /> OCLC records three copies at Yale Broward County Libraries and the Chicago Public Library. Beijing: Yinyue chubanshe 1964. Very good. 4pp. on a single folded sheet printed in red and black. Minor wear and toning. A militant song about "centuries of hatred" seething in the awakening hearts of an oppressed minority and the eighteen levels of imperialist hell echoing with the sounds of the coming liberation forces. Lyrics include "The Negro's American oppressors are the common enemy of all races." Lyricist Guang Weiran 1913-2002 was a prominent poet author of some revolutionary China's most well-known songs including the Yellow River Cantata. The present work falls in line with contemporary efforts by Mao himself to express support for the struggles of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. Yinyue chubanshe unknown

Chicago: Theodore R. Frye 1949. Very good. 3pp. on a single folded sheet. Old folds and creases minor wear. A rare advertising circular issued by Theodore R. Frye Publishers of Chicago touted here as "America's Favorite and Best Seller in Gospel Song Books." The main advertisement is for the three volumes of "Frye's Echoes of the Baptist Music Convention" that are "Just Off the Press!" with a long description of their contents. The work also includes a price list of ten other Frye publications and a short note on a book called Improving the Music in the Church by Kenneth Morris. The front cover is almost entirely taken up with a portrait of Frye. Theodore R. Frye was an important figure in the history and development of gospel music. He helped found the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses along with Thomas A. Dorsey and helped launch the career of Mahalia Jackson. A handsome promotional card for the Ancrum School Glee Club an African-American singing group based in Boston. The card is comprised of a photographic image of twenty-two tuxedoed young African American males covering about three-fourths of the space with printed text at left. Estelle Ancrum Forster founded the Ancrum School of Music at 74 West Rutland Square in Boston in 1905 and advertised in a few editions of The Negro Motorist's Green Book as late as 1941. The school appears to have served African American students. Forster was according to the sixth edition of Who's Who in Colored America a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music. unknown

The Famous Suwanee River Quartette cover title
Philadelphia 1920. Good. 4pp. on a single folded sheet. Quarto. Tanned and somewhat brittle minor edge chipping some short closed edge tears. A seemingly unrecorded promotional touting the talents of the now-obscure Famous Suwanee River Quartette. The group formed in Cleveland Ohio around 1910 and led by John Gantt traveled extensively for almost fifteen years and became especially well-known for their rendition of "Old Black Joe" which is mentioned here. The present pamphlet a most ephemeral item advertises the group with press releases reviews "recent press comments" descriptions of the musical strengths of Gantt as well as the other performers as a whole. The text claims that "Mr. Gantt is entitled to supremacy in this field.he is a master interpreter of the songs melodies and folk lore of the Southern Negro." The work is illustrated with photographs of the musicians with their instruments on both the front cover and the internal two-page spread. No copies in OCLC. unknown

Hamilton Ontario 1902. About very good. 4pp. on a single folded folio sheet. Illustrated. Minor wear old fold a few short closed tears one longer closed horizontal tear at spine fold even toning. With two small ink stamps on front cover advertising a 1904 performance. A very rare and visually appealing promotional for the Famous Canadian Jubilee Singers and Imperial Orchestra just after the turn of the 20th century. The front cover is decorated with a large group portrait surrounded by floral decorations. The remaining three pages contain a wealth of information on the group and its activities including the artists in the group the nature of their program numerous press notices from Canada England and the U.S.A. and more. The final page under the title "Black but Comely" touts the talents of four soloists for the Jubilee Singers namely Marie Dorsa C.H. Francis S.R. Overstreet and F.N. Warner with a portrait of each inside a six-pointed star. Two other photographs on the second page also picture quartettes within the group which include the four soloists and a couple of other performers including the proprietor of the group W. Carter. The ink stamps on the front cover advertise a performance by the collective at the Congregational Church in South Royalton Vermont on Friday January 1 1904. We found just one other copy in OCLC at the University of Vermont which also exhibits a notice regarding a local Vermont performance. unknown

First and last leaves detached moderate wear and rubbing light soiling pencil annotations covering last blank page. A rare music score for a "Negro spiritual" arranged by noted African-American composer Lucie E. Campbell. The song is "Tramping - Wanna Be Ready - Walk Children" and is arranged over six pages here. A wonderful portrait of Campbell appears on the front cover of the present work. The Memphis Music Hall of Fame describes Lucie Campbell as follows: "One of the most regarded composers of African American religious song Lucie E. Campbell was a pioneering figure linking traditional hymnody to modern gospel composition and bridging gender and racial divides in the world of gospel music. Alongside such musical peers as Thomas A. Dorsey Roberta Martin and fellow Memphian Reverend W. Herbert Brewster she helped to forge the black gospel sound of the first half of the twentieth century and further belongs to a small coterie of composers who have set lasting standards for religious music in the black Baptist church." Campbell was also notable as an activist for social justice. She headed the Negro Education Association working for pay equity and other benefits for African American teachers. She also defied Jim Crow laws refusing to give up her seat in a segregated streetcar in 1945 a decade before Rosa Parks. A detailed biography of her is included in the Tennessee Encyclopedia. Large newspaper advertisement for “Cultural Experience Weekend†at State University of New York Geneseo organized by the Activities Commission and Kuumba Weusi Watu presumably student interest groups. Speakers include Dr. Charles Hurst then President of Malcom X College in Chicago and Geneseo student Maurice Odine who would become a communications scholar and consultant to the United Nations. Performers include legendary soul-funk groups Kool and the Gang and The Isley Brothers and jazz artist Roy Ayers alongside the Rochester-based student dance troupe Bottom of the Bucket But… which had just finished a tour of New York State prisons. The Geneseo student newspaper Lamron described Bottom of the Bucket’s performance as “a dance that celebrates the cultural heritage of the Black man. New York City: Gotham-Attucks Music Co 1908. Folio sheet music illustrated color pictorial cover with inset photographic portrait of the Robinson Trio. 5 pp. including cover. Approximately 13 ½ x 10 ½ inches. Several small edge tears and light wear to margins; good to very good overall. An early sheet music publication from the African American musical Bandanna Land the 1908 stage production starring the celebrated comedy team Bert Williams and George Walker two of the most influential Black performers in American theater at the turn of the twentieth century. The cover illustration depicts a figure gesturing across a map of the United States accompanied by the bold title “Any Old Place in Yankee Land Is Good Enough for Me†while an inset photograph identifies “The Robinson Trio†a Black vaudeville act likely consisting of James B. Robinson Stella Wiley and Dan Michael. <br /> <br /> The music was written collaboratively by two major African American composers of the ragtime era. Will Marion Cook 1869–1944 a classically trained violinist and composer who studied at the Oberlin Conservatory and later in Berlin was one of the most important musical figures in early Black musical theater. He worked closely with Williams and Walker on several productions and helped develop a distinctive style that blended ragtime rhythms with elements of operetta and popular song. Co-composer Chris Smith 1879–1949 best known for the widely popular dance song “Ballin’ the Jack†was another prominent Black songwriter associated with early twentieth-century musical theater and vaudeville. The lyrics were written by Alex Rogers 1876–1930 one of the most prolific African American lyricists of the period and a frequent collaborator with Cook. Wrinkling and small tears and chips to bottom margin some wrinkling to top right. Manuscript pencil “H Williams†on cover erased. Very good to excellent. Sheet music for “Build a Nest for Birdie†with music by James Tim Brymn 1881–1946 and lyrics by Richard C. McPherson 1873–1944 better known as Cecil Mack prominently featuring an inset photographic portrait of singer dancer and choreographer Ada Overton Walker 1880–1914 widely billed as the “Queen of the Cakewalk.†Walker a central figure of early twentieth-century African American musical theatre was closely associated with the Williams and Walker company and appeared in landmark productions including In Dahomey 1903 Abyssinia 1906 and Bandanna Land 1908; she frequently introduced new songs through stage performance. Brymn and Mack were frequent collaborators producing popular songs such as “Good Morning Carrie†1901 “Josephine My Jo†1902 and “Please Go ‘Way and Let Me Sleep†1902. Mack an important lyricist and entrepreneur within early Black commercial music networks co-founded the Gotham Music Company with composer Will Marion Cook; in 1905 the firm merged with the Attucks Music Company to form Gotham-Attucks one of the most significant African American–controlled publishing enterprises of the era. The company played a key role in promoting Black composers performers and theatrical material at a time when mainstream publishing houses often marginalized African American creators issuing titles such as Bert Williams and Alex Rogers’ “Nobody†1905 and Cecil Mack Lew Brown and Ford Dabney’s “That’s Why They Call Me Shine†1910. Carte-de-Visite Portrait of the Fisk Jubilee Singers in Hull during their First European Tour 1873–1874
Hull and Nuneaton: W. J. Wellsted & Son 1874. Carte de visite portrait measuring 2 ½ x 4 inches. Albumen photograph on original mount with Wellsted’s printed royal arms and “By Special Invitation†crest advertising the firm as “Photographers of the Prince & Princess of Wales†with addresses at 3 Paragon St. Hull and Church Lane Nuneaton. Excellent. A scarce provincial English studio portrait of the Fisk Jubilee Singers taken during their early British tours when they visited Hull in 1873 and 1874. A closely related photograph from the same Hull sitting is preserved at Hull Museums; that example includes the troupe’s manager George White along with an unidentified woman. The present image represents a variant from the same series consistent with multiple negatives or slightly altered arrangements made for local sale to concert attendees.<br /> <br /> The photograph aligns with the group’s well-documented appearances in Hull during their first English tour. They arrived on Friday August 1st 1873 and performed that evening at Hope Street Congregational Church where contemporary accounts describe the building as filled to capacity. The concert reportedly raised over fifty pounds with a second performance following on Sunday afternoon. During this same visit the group was heard singing outdoors near King William’s monument bringing their repertoire beyond the church interior and into the civic heart of the town. They returned to Hull on December 5th 1873 this time appearing at Hengler’s Circus a larger public venue. George White the group’s manager later remarked that Hull was a place where they had earned funds “beyond their expenses.â€1 On the Sunday of that December visit seven female members and one male singer accompanied by White attended a gathering of roughly three thousand schoolchildren at the Artillery Barracks where a collection of just over £17 was taken for the Jubilee fund. The following day they visited Wilberforce House at the invitation of merchant Thomas Massam singing in the birthplace room of William Wilberforce and performing both “John Brown’s Body†and “God Save the Queen†linking their American antislavery origins with Britain’s own abolitionist legacy.<br /> <br /> At some point in their visits the group was photographed at the W.J. Wellstead studio with the images likely produced to sell during their performances.
