[Concert Posters – Psychedelia – Independent Music – California] Unknown Artist
Painted Poster Advertising Psychedelic Band Locksley Hall at the Che House Pasadena 1971
Pasadena California 1971. Approximately 22 x 28 inch painting on heavy cardstock with 7 x 9 inch photograph affixed. Some spotting on a portion of the lower left; overall excellent. Locksley Hall was a Spokane-based psychedelic rock group formed in 1967 who nearly had a record deal with Epic in 1969. The project was scrapped and was not rediscovered until 1996 when it was finally released by Indianapolis-based Or Records. This hand-painted poster advertises the band playing for “one night only†at the Pasadena Che House—likely a house venue as the name suggests—in June of 1971 and notes that the band had previously played with Phil Ochs “Eric Burden sic & War†and others. A charming piece of independent music history. unknown

[Counterculture]; [Folk Music]
Newport Folk Festival July 1966
n.p.: n.p. 1966 1966. Pamphlet. Very near Fine. 4to. 28 cm x 21.5 cm. 1-80 pp. Concert / Festival Program. Staple-bound. Pictorial covers printed in white brown and blue. Illustrated with several full-page and in-text photographs some black and white some printed in blue. The rear cover has an advertisement for various albums from Columbia Records including Sounds of Silence and Highway 61 Revisited. The official program for the 1966 Newport Folk Festival which took place July 21st 22nd the 23rd and the 24th. The schedule is included and features Judy Collins Son House Flat and Scruggs Liam Clancy Chuck Berry The Lovin' Spoonful Howlin' Wolf Fannie Lou Hamer and Pete Seeger among many other performers. The Board of Directors of the festival are credited in this program and at that time included Judy Collins Alan Lomax Julius Lester and others. The program includes a few pieces of music journalism including a piece by Julius Lester on The Mileston Festival a two-day festival that celebrated African-American roots music in Mileston Mississippi. The festival was organized by and for Black people and was inspired by multiple conferences of people active in the Civil Rights movement. A number of other local festivals designed to celebrate and uplift the Black community took place after this festival and Lester's article outlines a few examples of such events. The Newport Folk Festival is still held today. This program celebrates the festival but also celebrates local organizers of small music scenes all around the country. Individual artisans are also advertised in this program along with an ad for American Airlines and a few corporate record label advertisements. An attractive piece of Americana. Minor toning to the rear cover overall a beautiful example. n.p. [1966] unknown

[Country Music] Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Hank Snow, June Carter Cash, The Carter Family, Minnie P
Archive of photographs of country music acts circa 1970s
N.p.: N.p. 1970. Archive of 288 vernacular color photographs of country music acts from the 1970s housed in a contemporary photo album with the subject of nearly every photograph identified by manuscript ink captions. Occasional additional notations give a date range between 1972-1980 for the photographs with most being dated 1977-1979.

The photographs primarily consist of performers on stage indicating the photographer was near the stage with a strong sense of composition and timing. Photographs of performers casually posing for the camera indicate the photographer likely had backstage access for some of the performances.

Based on additional information in some of the handwritten captions the photographs were primarily taken at concerts or events in the Western New York region - Chautauqua Dunkirk Little Valley and Lakewood - all within an hour of each other as well as the nearby Erie County NY Fair and Expo and Pittsfield PA. Other locations include the New York State Fair and Pittsburgh PA.

Included are images of country music legends Johnny Cash Dolly Parton Loretta Lynn Conway Twitty Hank Snow June Carter Cash The Carter Family Minnie Pearl Tanya Tucker Tammy Wynette and Wanda Jackson. Also included are photographs of singers who while lesser known today were among the biggest stars of the era including Bobby Goldsboro Crystal Gayle Donna Fargo Freddy Fender Jeannie C. Riley Buddy Alan Charlie Walker Peggy Sue Bill Anderson Kenny Price LeRoy Van Dyke Lynn Anderson Jay Lee Webb Jean Shepard and Kitty Wells. Finally the album contains images of smaller and possibly even regional acts some of which appear unknown to us presenting a broad survey of a transitional era in country music as rock soul and pop began to fuse with the more traditional country sound that had begun declining in popularity toward the end of the previous decade.

For more details please inquire.

Photographs variously sized primarily 3.5 x 5 inches but up to 7.5 x 9.75 inches. Generally Near Fine.

Housed in an about Very Good generic photo album with starting and loss to the spine fraying and rubbing. Several internal pages loose or with dried glue leading to occasional slipping of the photographs. N.p. unknown

[Drag Performance – Broadway – Sheet Music – Female Impersonation] [Julian Eltinge] Johnson, Howard; Meyer, George W; et al
Collection of Five Pieces of Sheet Music Composed for Drag Performer Julian Eltinge 1910–1917
New York City: Leo. Feist Inc. and others 1917. Five pieces of sheet music see full inventory below. Overall very good plus. Julian Eltinge 1881–1941 was the most commercially successful and popular female impersonator of his time. Beginning with drag performances in his adolescence he developed a convincing portrayal of female characters—shocking audiences at the end of shows by revealing that he was in costume—and had a successful career on the vaudeville circuit and on Broadway followed by appearances in several silent films and as mores around crossdressing changed in nightclubs.

Offered here are five pieces of sheet music written for Eltinge three of which are from the 1910 musical comedy The Fascinating Widow. A New York Times review of the Widow remarks that “once over the initial unpleasantness of the idea of female impersonation which is not easy for people of delicate sensibilities there is nothing especially displeasing about Mr. Eltinge’s efforts at femininity†and notes Eltinge’s popularity and ability to draw crowds.1

Titles Included:
“In the Land of Wedding Bells.†Howard Johnson and Geo. W. Meyer. New York: Leo. Feist Inc. 1917. 4 pp. Very good plus.
“The Crinoline Girlâ€. Julian Eltinge and Percy Wenrich. New York: Leo. Feist 1914. 6 pp. Very good.
“The Fascinating Widowâ€. E. Ray Goetz and Kerry Mills. New York: F.A. Mills Inc. 1911. 8 pp. Near Fine.
The Fascinating Widow “Jack-O-Lantern Moonâ€. Julian Eltinge Jack Mahoney and Percy Wenrich. New York: The Wenrich-Howard Co. 1913. 6 pp. Very good.
The Fascinating Widow “With Down-Cast Eyeâ€. Otto Hauerbach and Karl Hoschna. New York Chicago San Francisco London and Paris: M. Witmark & Sons 1910. 6 pp. Excellent.

1 “Eltinge in Musical Play.

[Einhorn, David] Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel
GESÄNGE FÜR DEN ÖFFENTLICHEN JÜDISCHEN GOTTESDIENST: AUS VERSCHIEDENEN LIEDERSAMMLÜNGEN ZUSAMMENGETRAGEN
1st edition. Period-style half leather with marbled boards, 12mo, 93 pages. In German. Singerman 1749. The David Einhorn Hymnal. Title translates as Songs for Jewish Public Worship. The Kneseth Israel (Philadelphia) board minutes from May 4, 1862, note that: A communication from Dr. Einhorn was handed in and reads as follows: To the respectable board of directors of Keneseth Israel! Since there is a decided shortage of hymn books not only in our reform congregation but in all the others in America, I am determined to put together a collection of songs, about 80-90 pages. They should be put to use during the service, and I will give them to the congregation if the congregation is wiling to undertake the printing....I suggest to the respectable board to take over the publication of the hymn collection and let me know soon, that the printing can start. Philadelphia, April 28, 1862. Dr. Einhorn. Decided, to accept the communication from Dr. Einhorn and make preparations for the printing [translation of minutes located at KI and at HUC in Cincinnati]. Then, according to the minutes of the next meeting, the board decided to fund the printing, which included 100 bound volumes. Reform Liturgy Scholar Judah Cohen has noted that the hymnal was almost entirely Einhorn, at least based on these records, and created in his view as a service to the growing reform movement. Rabbi Dr. Lance Sussman, Senior Rabbi at Kenesseth Israel in Philadelphia and a scholar on the history of the Synagogue and on 19th Century American Jewish history, reported on the H-Judaic internet listserv that I believe from the time Einhorn arrived in Baltimore from Europe in 1855, KI was in touch with him about its music program. KI had a gentile organist, William Fischer, who partnered with Einhorn both before and during Einhorn's time in Philly. Einhorn had fled Baltimore on April 19, 1861, following his delivery of an anti-Slavery sermon; a mob sought to tar and feather and he fled to Philadelphia where he became spiritual leader of Congregation Keneseth Israel. SUBJECT(S) : Jewish hymns. Reform Judaism -- Liturgy -- Texts. Jewish hymns. Reform Judaism Liturgy and ritual. OCLC: 9033019 OCLC lists only 6 copies worldwide (HUC, Gratz, Penn, Princeton, Princeton Theological, LBI). Far scarcer than famous first American Jewish hymnal published 20 years earlier in Charleston, which shows up with 9 holdings in OCLC. Institutional perforation stamp to title and final leaf, one other margin stamp. Otherwise very clean, an attractive copy of this exceedingly scarce and important American Jewish Hymnal by one of the 2 most import leaders of American Reform in the 19th Century (the other being Isaac Wise) .
