‎Berlin: Erk'schen Männer-Gesangverein 1902 1902. Hardcover. Near Fine. 12mo. 17 cm x 10.5 cm. 17 1-16 1 pp. Red cloth with gold lettering and green decorations on the front board; all edges gilt. Floral endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated with several black and white photographs. With several pieces of ephemera laid in: little bits of sheet music a concert program from October 1903 and a flyer or a cartoon from 1903. This is a German songbook for the members of Erk'Schen Men's Choir based in Berlin. This was a choir founded off of the legacy of German Romantic composer and teacher Ludwig Erk. This copy belonged to a Herr Neubauer a teacher. The book is filled with information about the current members of the choir and the music they would perform. There are a few financial ledgers with paid stamps representing the quarterly dues for the choir members. Ruth L. Dewhurst "Unison and Harmony Dissonance and Dissolution: German Choral
Societies in an Age of Rising Nationalism Mass Culture and Social Conflict 1870-1918 ". Ruth L. Dewhurst argues that choirs like these contributed to and reflected the rise of German nationalism before the First World War. While the choir may have brought German people together it also helped to forge inflexible ideas of identity art and achievement. This would help foster conflict between the nations that would eventually go on to fight one another in the First World War. A spot of rubbing on the front board and a bookplate on the front pastedown. Erk'schen Männer-Gesangverein [1902] hardcover‎

‎[Film – Horror – Popular Music] Bacharach, Burt; David, Mack‎

‎The Blob Beware of the Blob. From the Paramount Picture The Blob starring Steve McQueen‎

‎New York: Famous Music Corp 1958. Folio sheet music 4 pp. including cover. Fine copy. The surprisingly uncommon sheet music for the theme song from the cult science-fiction horror film The Blob 1958 issued the year of the film’s release. The music was composed by the young Burt Bacharach with lyrics by Mack David and the song was recorded by the vocal group The Five Blobs as the film’s title theme. Unlike the ominous orchestral themes typical of horror films of the period the song presents the story with playful novelty humor warning listeners to “Beware of the Blob†as the amorphous creature descends on a small Pennsylvania town. The film itself produced by Paramount Pictures and starring Steve McQueen in one of his earliest leading roles became a drive-in theater sensation and later a staple of late-night television. Its distinctive theme song with Bacharach’s catchy melody and tongue-in-cheek lyrics helped establish the film’s lasting cult reputation.

An appealing example of mid-century movie tie-in sheet music associated with one of the best-known science-fiction horror films of the 1950s. Scarily uncommon in OCLC with only two copies held at BYU and University of North Texas. Famous Music Corp unknown‎

‎I Want a Cave Man Like William Hart The Movie Star‎

‎New York: Kendis-Brockman Music Co. Inc 1919. Folio sheet music 3 pp. 9 x 12 inches. Near fine with minimal wear. A novelty song capitalizing on the immense popularity of silent-film Western star William S. Hart one of the most famous movie cowboys of the 1910s. Written by James Kendis and James Brockman and published in New York in 1919 the song humorously celebrates Hart’s rugged screen persona presenting the singer’s ideal romantic hero as a strong frontier-style “cave man†modeled on the motion-picture star. The lyrics frame the narrator as an enthusiastic movie fan who spends her time attending picture shows and dreaming of meeting the actor she idolizes. The refrain declares her preference for a “rough man but not a tough man.†

William S. Hart 1864–1946 was among the first major Western film actors and was known for portraying morally upright frontier heroes in silent films of the 1910s and early 1920s. His fame during this period was enormous and his image circulated widely in fan magazines promotional cards and novelty items such as this song publication. An appealing example of early Hollywood celebrity culture expressed through Tin Pan Alley sheet music reflecting the moment when film stars first became subjects of popular songs and mass-market fandom.

See the William Hart entry at the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society: https://scvhistory.com/scvhistory/lw3617.htm. ‎A Gay Ranchero Soundie Film‎

‎No Place: Standard Pictures Corporation. Unbound. Good. No place or date circa 1941. 16 mm film in canister. Reel measures approximately 3 5/8 inches across. A soundie for the song "A Gay Ranchero" by Noro Morales a pianist and big band leader originally from Puerto Rico. Different sources provide differing information on this particular soundie. UCLA indicates this was produced in 1941 by Minoco Productions. Another source indicates Malina Luba was the singer although Maria Del Rey is listed in the opening credits of this reel. Soundies were essentially the first music videos offering several minute films to accompany a song. Some featured actors and musicians who would later become famous and some featured African-American artists at a time when they received little to no exposure in music or film. We cannot play test this so we cannot offer grading other than the film appears to be in good condition and does not have any vinegar type smell. Minor scuffing and wear to the metal canister. ‎[French musical manuscript].‎

‎Contredanses de L'an X and Contredanses de L'an XI. N. p., 1801-1803.‎

‎4to. (23) pp. on 12 ff. Brown ink on paper. Original wrapper. Sewn. A collection of 27 and 26 short contredances mostly in 6/8 time for violin, partly with fingering, and two additional songs on the final pages, one of which is attributed to the Belgian composer Joseph Henri Mees (1777-1855). The song "L'Amour et les Grâces" was published in Rouen in the early 19th century as a "Romance" with guitar accompaniment (BNF, VM 28-1221). It might point back to an older version of the same song by the Italian composer Iacopo Gotifredo Ferrari, published among "Six nouvelles romances avec accompagnement de forte-piano" in Paris between 1785 and 1793. The lyrics by Abbé Garon are noted separately with three stanzas underneath the music and the final two stanzas inserted between the 18th and 19th contredanse of the second collection. It remains unclear whether the two collections of contredanses can be attributed to Mees. The 10th contredanse of the second collection in 2/4 time, entitled "La flute enchantée", is based on Tamino's aria "Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja" from Mozart's The Magic Flute, which had premiered in 1791. The first Paris production of an adapted version of the opera took place in 1801 (year X of the French revolutionary calendar). - Two hands can be distinguished, the second on the last 4 leaves on partly different paper, which might point to repairs. The original handwritten title was torn off the wrapper. 3 staves partly or fully pasted for corrections. With waterstains on the cover, browning and minor tears. Some ink corrosion; binding loose.‎
