Good to very good. A visually striking example of Oscar Wilde–related ephemera issued during the height of the writer’s American lecture tour of 1882. Though lacking a printed date the title strongly suggests publication in connection with Wilde’s appearance at the Boston Music Hall on January 31 1882 where he delivered his lecture “The English Renaissance†as part of his widely publicized tour across the United States. Contemporary accounts describe the event as a notable cultural moment including the presence of Harvard students dressed in exaggerated aesthetic costume who occupied the front rows of the hall reflecting both the fascination with and satirical reception of Wilde’s aesthetic persona.1<br /> <br /> The lithographic cover prominently depicts a figure carrying an oversized sunflower an image closely associated with Wilde and the broader Aesthetic Movement. Such illustrated sheet music functioned not only as musical publications but also as collectible artifacts capitalizing on the figure of Wilde. Over the course of several months he traveled widely across the United States and Canada delivering lectures on art decoration and cultural taste and quickly became a subject of both admiration and parody in the American press. Although he never returned for a comparable national tour Wilde maintained a lasting connection to American audiences. Portrait of the 45-year-old Mahler during the heyday of his directorship at the Vienna Court Opera, three years after his wedding to Alma Schindler. One of the extremely rare works by the sugar industrialist and collector Friedrich Spitzer, who since 1895 had devoted himself to a close study of experimental photographic processes, especially gum bichromate printing - a multi-layered method that accommodated the needs of fin-de-siècle artistic photography in that it allowed for a high degree of creative freedom during every step of the process, making every resulting print a unique work of art. - Spitzer, who cultivated an image as a dandy, was a member of Vienna's modernist art scene around the turn of the century. He was accepted into the renowned London photographic society "Linked Ring" as early as 1892 and joined Vienna's "Camera Club" in 1897. For his small but expressive and technically brilliant body of work he is remembered as one of the principal Austrian artistic photographers of his age. - The present portrait of Mahler was shown at Spitzer's only exhibition, at Vienna's Miethke Gallery in 1907. The artist's autograph signature with the date "05" is usually cropped from the published reproductions. - Perfectly preserved; framed under museum glass. 27 SS. Halblederband der Zeit über Marmordeckeln. Qu.-Folio (390 x 230 mm). Der erste Teil des Manuskripts ist ein kurioses unpubliziertes Stück Programmusik, das den Einzug von Kaiser Franz I. in Paris am 14. April 1814 schildert. Eine nicht völlig passende kolorierte Radierung des Wiener Graphikverlegers Johann Schönberg, die auf den inneren Vorderdeckel geklebt wurde, zeigt den "Einzug der allirten [!] Truppen in Paris, am 31. März 1814, unter dem allgemeinen Jubel des Volkes; Kaiser Alexander, und Friedrich Wilhelm an ihrer Spitze!". Das eröffnende "Andante maestoso" des anonymen und unbetitelten Klavierstücks beschreibt den Tag vor dem Einzug: "Freudiges Gefühl und gespannte Erwartung der Pariser den Erretter Europas in ihren Mauern zu haben". Dem folgen ein Adagio "Der schöne erwünschte Morgen beginnt" und mehrere Allegros, die den Einzug der Truppen und die Ansammlung der Bevölkerung schildern. In einem weiteren Allegro verlassen die in der Radierung dargestellten verbündeten Monarchen Paris, "um ihren erhabenen und mächtigen Bundesgenossen einzuholen und seinen Einzug zu verherrlichen". Endlich kann der "Einzug des Kaisers in Paris" mit einem Allegro Maestoso gefeiert werden: "Umgeben von Seinen hohen Allirten und von einem auserordentlichen ja fast unzählbaren Gefolge von Marschällen, Feldherrn und Generälen von allen Nationen zieht Kaiser Franz nicht als Eroberer sondern als Freund als Befreyer in die Stadt". Auf musikalische Motive, die weitere Details des Einzugs erlebbar machen sollen, folgt die enthusiastische Reaktion der Bevölkerung in einem Allegro: "Die Einwohner der Hauptstadt überlassen sich ganz dem schönen Ausdruck ihrer Rührung" und lassen den Kaiser hochleben: "Von allen Seiten ertönt durch die ganze Dauer des Zuges von Hundert-Tausenden der Ruf: Es lebe der deutsche Kaiser, Es lebe der Retter und Vater der Völker". Zwei Märsche, darunter der "Marsch der k. k. Österreichischen Truppen" und ein Finale mit allgemeinem Dank für die "Befreyung" schließen das Stück ab. - Der zweite Teil des Manuskripts ist die Klavierstimme von Joseph Mayseders "Rondino Concertante, Op. 36" für Violine und Klavier. - Die Programmusik für Franz I. stammt zweifellos aus dem Kreis der kaiserlichen Hofmusiker, dem auch Joseph Mayseder angehörte. Bereits 1810 wurde er Konzertmeister des Hofopernorchesters. Ab 1816 wirkte er als Violinsolist an der Wiener Hofmusikkapelle und 1836 wurde er schließlich deren Leiter. Als Geigenvirtuose, Quartettmusiker und Komponist von Kammermusik war Mayseder weit über die Grenzen des Kaiserreichs geachtet. - Das aufwändige Manuskript stammt aus einer Hand. - Etwas angestaubt und gebräunt, teils auch fingerfleckig. Einband berieben und lädiert; die Bindung lose mit Spuren alter Blockheftung.
