‎[Music – African American Vocal Harmony – Cab Calloway Circle] The Five Percolators‎

‎Signed Photographic Christmas Card of the Five Percolators Tap and Vocal Harmony Group in Cab Calloway’s Circle Early 1930s‎

‎N.p. 1930. Original 4 x 5 inch photographic Christmas greeting card. Gelatin silver studio publicity photograph mounted within printed holiday card stock signed in ink. Minor edge wear; strong tonal range near fine. Studio portrait of the Five Percolators posed in coordinated light suits with dark ties arranged in a low forward-leaning formation common in some early 1930s Black vocal harmony ensembles. The group was active during the early to mid 1930s performing with Cab Calloway—who apparently signed them to begin with out of Buffalo—and others as a downticket act supporting larger acts. The Buffalo Times noted that the Five Percolators “round out Cab’s act on the Buffalo stage†identifying Buffalo as the hometown of members Cliff and Jimmy Moore and stating that the group performed in Buffalo night spots before “hitting out for New York where Cab signed them up.â€1

The lower portion of the card bears the printed seasonal greeting: “With sincere wishes for your happiness at Christmas and throughout the New Year†with FIVE PERCOLATERS printed at bottom. A bold contemporary inscription reads: “To a beautiful little girl hoping I see more of you — James†likely signed by the aforementioned James or Jimmy Moore. The group usually appeared downticket but newspapers note that they headlined a show in 1933 at the Criterion Ballroom in New Jersey. Contemporary press accounts range from describing them as “percolating harmony and taps with skill†to lamenting “the excessively loud shouting of one of the tall fellows who plays the guitar†in the performance at Calloway’s High Court of Hi-De-Ho show of 1935. By 1936 the group disappeared from the scene.

1 “Percolators†The Buffalo Times December 2 1934 59. unknown‎

‎[Music – American Song – Illustrated Sheet Music] Foster, Stephen C‎

‎Willie My Brave. To Mrs. A. L. Robinson‎

‎New York: Firth Pond & Co 1851. Folio sheet music illustrated tinted lithographic cover by Sarony & Major. 5 pp. including cover. Approximately 13 x 10 inches. Light toning and minor edge wear; archival tape to spine likely removed from a volume at some point very good overall. A particularly handsome illustrated edition of Stephen C. Foster’s sentimental ballad “Willie My Brave†featuring an elaborate tinted lithographic cover by the New York firm of Sarony & Major. The central image depicts a seated woman gazing out toward the sea while a greyhound rests its head upon her lap conveying the melancholy theme of absence and waiting suggested by the song. Surrounding vignettes include dramatic maritime scenes with a ship struggling in rough waters and another vessel sailing toward a distant harbor. The dog is especially well done while the accompanying ship in a storm drives home the point of the song. Among Foster’s many illustrated title pages this example is often considered one of the most attractive. According to William H. Fuld’s Pictorial Bibliography of First Editions of Stephen Foster 1957 the present example meets all points for the first edition initial state. The song itself enjoyed considerable popularity in the early 1850s and appeared in numerous subsequent printings. Firth, Pond & Co unknown‎

Folio format. Generally very good overall with typical handling wear toning and occasional edge wear. A substantial accumulation of blues sheets centered on the work of W. C. Handy 1873–1958 the composer widely known as the “Father of the Blues.†Spanning more than four decades of publication and assembled over many decades by a Chicago-area collector the group documents both the popularity of Handy’s compositions and the central role his publishing enterprises played in bringing blues music into the American popular music mainstream. Pace & Handy the pioneering Black-owned music publishing firm founded in 1912 by Handy and businessman Harry H. Pace published many of the early issues. The company was among the first African American–owned music publishers to achieve national commercial success issuing blues compositions at a time when Black musicians rarely controlled the publication or profits of their work. First published in 1914 it appeared over the following decades in numerous new arrangements and promotional editions reflecting performances by major bandleaders and orchestras such as Paul Whiteman Earl Hines Tex Beneke and Erskine Hawkins as well as theatrical and film adaptations including the revue Blackbirds of 1928 and the later 1958 motion picture St. Louis Blues.

Overall a quite extensive accumulation. ‎[Music – Blues – Inscribed Copies] Handy, W C; Robinson, J Russel‎

‎The Memphis Blues Or Mr. Crump. Inscribed to Noble Sissle‎

‎New York: W.C. Handy 1940. Folio sheet music 8 pp. Inscribed to Noble Sissle and signed by both J. Russel Robinson and W. C. Handy. Excellent condition. The sheet music for one of the foundational publications of American blues inscribed to Noble Sissle. Written by W. C. Handy with collaborator J. Russel Robinson and first issued in 1912 “The Memphis Blues Or Mr. Crump†is widely considered one of the first blues compositions to achieve broad popularity through commercial sheet music. The piece originated as a campaign song for Memphis political figure Edward H. “Boss†Crump but was quickly adapted for popular use.
Sissle 1889–1975 later known for the landmark Broadway musical Shuffle Along 1921 with Eubie Blake was active in Black theatrical and orchestral music during the 1910s and 1920s and performed a number of Handy’s compositions. Sissle and Handy remained connected professionally over their careers. Sissle and his orchestra performed and recorded Handy’s “St. Louis Blues†and he participated in recordings of Handy’s “Loveless Love†beginning in the early 1920s and again in later revival recordings during the 1930s. In later decades Sissle and Blake also involved Handy in projects celebrating early Black musical theatre and blues including demonstrations and recordings prepared for a proposed revival of Shuffle Along in 1950. Their collaborations frequently centered on presenting Handy’s blues compositions in concert and recording contexts that highlighted the development of Black popular music. The song “Memphis Blues†was also quite significant in Sissle’s position as vocalist and drum major in the regimental band of the 369th Infantry Regiment during the First World War where he performed with James Reese Europe. Sissle appeared as one of the band’s featured singers and helped present the group’s popular repertoire “Memphis Blues†being one of their core pieces. This inscription happened after 1940 per the copyright renewal note on the sheet which we used to date it. Overall a fantastic association linking Handy Robinson and Sissle early in their careers. ‎[Music – Con Artists – Theatre – Chicago] Lander, Max; "Princess Dalla Pattra"‎

‎Tears Make My Rainbows‎

‎Chicago Illinois: Egyptian Press 1932. Folio 5 pp. Wraps torn at seam slightly musty odor good condition. An unrecorded composition by a woman who travelled through the midwest claiming to be a descendant of Cleopatra using the name Princess Dalla Pattra. The details of the princess are murky as she disappears from newspaper records after 1930 when she admitted in court to using a manager to stage a publicity stunt in St. Louis.1 In her hearing she also admitted that she had been arrested for embezzlement in San Francisco in 1920. Two years later rather inexplicably this songsheet was published in collaboration with a Max Lander who according to patent records was English.

The introduction to the song reads: “Hear the desert winds shriek and the tom-toms in the distance thrilling with the weird undertone of the desert night then the calm as the Royal Egyptian Maiden sings her love song to her desert prince.†We find no record of the composition in OCLC or anywhere else or of the princess in newspapers after her 1930 court appearance with the only findable record of her continued impersonation a patent registered in 19312 and this song sheet.

1 “St. Louis Wonders if it Got a Fooling†Kirksville Daily Express and Kirksville Daily News April 6 1930.
2 “Only to be with you just for a day†Catalog of Copyright Entries Part 3: Musical Compositions Library of Congress Copyright Office 1932 22760 accessed at https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_ZS5jAAAAIAAJ/page/1165/. ‎[Music – Dance – Cuba / Caribbean – African-Americana] Tyers, W H‎

‎Trocha. A Cuban Dance‎

‎New York: Jos. W. Stern & Co 1890. Folio sheet music illustrated pictorial cover printed in orange. 5 pp. including cover. Approximately 13 ½ x 10 ½ inches. Covers detached loss to front cover contents complete fair to good. A decorative late nineteenth-century dance publication for “Trocha†described on the cover as “A Cuban Dance†composed by the African American composer and bandleader W. H. Tyers. The elaborate pictorial cover incorporates stylized tropical foliage and island scenery rendered in a bold single-color design typical for the period’s fascination with exoticized musical forms.

William H. Tyers 1870–1924 was an African American composer arranger and bandleader active in New York during the ragtime era. Born in Petersburg Virginia to Henry Tyers and Jane “Jennie†Jones both formerly enslaved he spent part of his youth in Richmond before his family relocated to New York City where he began studying piano. His early teachers recognized an aptitude for composition as well as performance and by the mid-1880s he was writing dance pieces including polkas and waltzes. Around the age of twenty Tyers secured employment as a music librarian and arranger with a touring concert company a position that brought him to Europe where he studied orchestration and arranging with Professor Gaspari in Hamburg.

Returning to New York Tyers became active in the city’s rapidly expanding popular music trade working as an arranger and composer for publishers including F. A. Mills and Jos. W. Stern & Co. In 1896 he published “Sambo†a syncopated march sometimes considered to be one of the first instrumental rags.1 “Trocha†also released in the 1980s brought Tyers prominence for his ability to write Latin-style rhythms. It was re-issued in 1913 as a tango and its success led Tyers to work as an arranger with Joseph W. Stern in 1897.

Tyers’ compositions blended contemporary American dance music with Caribbean and Latin themes a style reflected in pieces such as Trocha and later in his well-known ragtime composition Panama 1911 which remained a staple of early jazz and dance orchestras. OCLC finds two copies with different entries at the Cleveland Public Library and the British Museum Reference Collections.

1 “William Tyers Music Arranger†African American Registry https://aaregistry.org/story/william-tyers-born/ accessed March 10 2026. ‎[Music – Hutchinson Family – Political Corruption] Hutchinson, JJ; The Hutchinson Family J J‎

‎Eight Dollars a Day. Written & Dedicated to the Congress of the U.S.‎

‎Boston Massachusetts: Olivery Ditson 1848. Folio 14 x 10 ½ inches 5 pp. Slight splitting to covers contents fine very good plus overall. The sheet for the anti-politician polemic “Eight Dollars a Day" which was apparently a crowd favorite at the Hutchinson Family’s performances. The song lambastes the political class and its waste insinuating among other things that the politicians were spending their bloated salary on alcohol: “A flaming speech is made by one when the call is yea or nay But all are agreed with the question comes of Eight dollars a day.†The song was written in 1848 early in the Hutchinson Family’s period moving toward social activism and four years after their most famous abolition-themed compositions.1 Judging by the twelve copies held at libraries this was probably one of the better selling titles in their repertoire from the time period.

1 Philip D. ‎[Music – Hutchinson Family – Abolition] Hutchinson, Jesse; The Hutchinson Family‎

‎Right Over Wrong. Coming Right Along. Song & Chorus‎

‎New York: Horace Waters 1855. Sheet music measuring 10 ¾ x 14 ¼ inches 6 pp. Foxed with wear to edges; very good to excellent. A scarce Hutchinson Family sheet published in 1855 with an abolition theme. The song goes in part:

“The captive now begins to rise and burst his chains asunder While Politicians stand aghast in anxious fear and wonder. No longer shall the bondman sigh beneath the galling fetters He sees the Dan of Freedom nigh and reads the golden letters…†

It also discusses alcohol within a larger theme of good triumphing over evil. The song is included in some songsters but this standalone version is quite uncommon with one copy held at Dartmouth. In 1855 the Hutchinson Family Singers continued extensive touring across the northeastern United States presenting concert programs that combined abolitionist songs temperance material and political commentary aligned with reform movements. They had embraced abolitionism as a cause about a decade earlier with a string of compositions including “Get Off the Track†and “The Bereaved Slave Mother.â€. Horace Waters unknown‎

‎[Music – Lithography – Nineteenth-Century Theatre – Male Impersonation]‎

‎Tassels on the Boots. From Elise Holt’s Celebrated Songs‎

‎Boston: Koppitz Prüfer & Co. 30 West St. cor. Mason Street; New York: Wm. A. Pond & Co 1869. Folio lithographed cover with hand-coloring. Stitching removed at margins suggesting this was bound in a larger volume else about fine. Signed by Holt next to the illustration. Near Fine. A finely executed example of post–Civil War American sheet music lithography depicting stage performer Elise Holt in masculine costume top hat and cigar in a style typical of Boston commercial lithographic production of the period. The imagery situates Holt within the established nineteenth-century tradition of theatrical male impersonation or “breeches roles†in which female performers adopted masculine dress and gesture as part of fashionable stage personas. Archival records identify Holt as a ballet dancer who later appeared as a burlesque performer and died while touring in 1873 after contracting typhoid fever.1 She led the Elyse Holt Burlesque Troupe. Photographic evidence held by Digital Commonwealth likewise shows Holt posed in masculine stage attire indicating that male impersonation formed part of her professional repertoire. The song sometimes seen as “Tassels on her Boots†extolls the virtues of women’s clothing. Overall a nice lithographic example of women performing in men’s roles showing a fairly obscure but widely touring performer whose career was tragically cut short by illness. We find two copies of this sheet at BYU and Baylor.

1 “Elise Holt ballet dancer turned burlesque star†Kentucky Historical Society Nicola Marschall Collection https://www.kyhistory.com/digital/collection/PH/id/2477/. unknown‎

An interesting piece of sheet music perhaps shedding light on the term “guinea†as it applies to Italians which though it originated in Europe migrated to the United States. Lingard’s song begins “I’m poor Italian guinea pig boy Straight from Florence I come with my stock.†The song was anthologized later in Lingard songsters. The song is proof that the term was being used in performance and theater circles before the mass arrival of Italians in the United States. “Guinea†was also widely used to describe people of dark complexion during the period stemming from the Guinea region of West Africa. With an attractive lithographic cover of a cheerful enough looking boy extending his hand. We find two copies of this sheet at Oxford and the British Library with none held in the United States. unknown‎

‎[Music – Popular Song – Gender Satire] Leslie, Edgar; Monaco, James V‎

‎Masculine Women! Feminine Men! Which Is the Rooster Which Is the Hen‎

‎New York: Edgar Leslie / Clarke & Leslie Songs Inc 1926. Folio sheet music illustrated color pictorial cover with portrait of Sammy Clark; with ukulele arrangement. Light wear and small creases; covers detached small tears at margins still bright and attractive. Fair to good. A lively novelty song from the height of the Jazz Age fascination with shifting gender roles written by lyricist Edgar Leslie and composer James V. Monaco and published in New York in 1926. The cover advertises the piece “as sung by Sammy Clark†the vaudeville performer associated with the Clarke & Leslie publishing enterprise. The lyrics belong to a genre of Jazz Age comic songs reacting to the rapid social changes of the 1920s when the emergence of the “flapper†produced widespread discussion about masculinity and femininity. Songs from the period often framed these developments humorously or anxiously and “Masculine Women! Feminine Men!†reflects that tone asking in its subtitle “Which is the rooster Which is the henâ€â€”a joking reference to perceived reversals of traditional gender roles. Although written as a satirical commentary on contemporary manners rather than as an explicit statement about sexuality the song later acquired an association with LGBTQ audiences and performers. In later decades it was revived and performed in drag and cabaret contexts where its playful questioning of gender presentation resonated with queer performance traditions. ‎[Music – Ragtime] Joplin, Scott‎

‎Elite Syncopations‎

‎St. Louis: John Stark & Son 1902. Large-format folio sheet music for piano solo. Trimmed to 9¼ x 12 inches. Light edge wear with small chips to lower corner approx. ¼ inch else very good; a bright and attractive example. Very good. First edition of one of Scott Joplin’s classic ragtime compositions issued during his most productive period with the St. Louis publisher John Stark. Joplin 1868–1917 widely known as the “King of Ragtime†helped establish ragtime as a sophisticated form of American popular music through works such as “Maple Leaf Rag†“The Entertainer†and “Elite Syncopations.†As Joplin himself insisted when defending the genre from critics “Syncopations are no indication of light or trashy music†a remark reflecting his ambition to elevate ragtime compositions such as this into carefully structured piano works. The pictorial cover engraved by Fred Graf of St. Louis shows a fashionable couple seated upon a musical staff while a cherub below plays the cymbals. John Stark & Son unknown‎

‎[Music – Ragtime] Joplin, Scott‎

‎The Entertainer — A Rag Time Two-Step‎

‎St. Louis: John Stark & Son 1902. Folio sheet music illustrated color pictorial cover. 5 pp. including cover. Early issue dedicated to “James Brown and His Mandolin Club.†A notably bright and well-preserved example with strong color and only light edge wear; small chips to corners of second and third leaves with no loss to printed portion very good overall an unusually attractive copy of one of the most famous publications of the ragtime era. Very good. First edition of Scott Joplin’s celebrated ragtime composition issued during the composer’s most productive period with his principal publisher John Stark of St. Louis. The cover illustration depicts a sharply dressed performer stepping through a theatrical doorway while a curious onlooker peers from below. Joplin 1868–1917 often called the “King of Ragtime†was the most influential composer associated with the style and his partnership with Stark produced many of the era’s defining works including “Maple Leaf Rag†1899 “The Ragtime Dance†1902 and “The Entertainer.†Though enormously popular when published the piece would achieve even greater fame during the twentieth-century ragtime revival especially after its prominent use in The Sting 1973 where Marvin Hamlisch’s adaptation of Joplin’s music introduced the composition to a new international audience.

Like many of Joplin’s works “The Entertainer†is structured as a ragtime two-step combining the syncopated rhythms of African American musical traditions with forms derived from the late nineteenth-century dance repertoire. The dedication to James Brown and His Mandolin Club reflects the widespread popularity of mandolin orchestras and amateur musical societies during the ragtime era which frequently performed arrangements of current dance compositions. Few pieces of American popular music have enjoyed the enduring recognition of “The Entertainer.†We find no other first edition copies on the market at the time of writing. John Stark & Son unknown‎

‎[Music – Sheet Music – Gender] Reardon, Harry; Whiteway, William‎

‎Tom-Boy Sue‎

‎Malden Massachusetts: Edward A. Bowen 1910. Folio wraps 5 pp. Fine condition. An unrecorded sheet about two romantic youngsters by Harry Reardon who was apparently a local composer of comic songs active in the Brockton Massachusetts area during this period we find a newspaper record in newspapers of a recital at the Fidelity Lodge in Brockton in 1911. The song extols the virtue of a girl named Tom-Boy Sue and laments “Remember when folks called you ‘tomboy’ / in schooldays when I was your beau…†before becoming more straightforwardly romantic and sentimental. Edward A. Bowen operated as a small regional music publisher in Malden Massachusetts in the opening decades of the twentieth century issuing locally authored popular songs novelty numbers and light sentimental pieces for domestic piano performance. Unlike the larger Boston and New York houses Bowen’s imprint appears primarily on works by area composers and performers. Of interest to Massachusetts imprint completists those interested in the tomboy archetype in popular culture or perhaps the Johnny Cash fan in your life. ‎[Music – Tin Pan Alley – Gender] O'Neil, Dannie; Foley, Jimmie‎

‎My Regular Girl Is a Regular Feller And I’m Her Regular Beau. Novelty Song‎

‎New York: M. Witmark & Sons 1919. Folio sheet music 3 pp. plus pictorial cover 4 pp. total. Near fine with light general wear and minor handling marks. A lively Tin Pan Alley novelty song written and performed by the vaudeville duo Dannie O’Neil and Jimmie Foley whose studio portraits appear prominently on the cover. The design places their photograph against a decorative field of bold red flowers and deep blue foliage a bright poster-like arrangement characteristic of Witmark’s visually striking sheet music covers of the late 1910s. The cover explicitly advertises the piece as “written and sung by†O’Neil and Foley reflecting the common Tin Pan Alley practice of promoting songs through the touring stage performers who introduced them.

The comic title plays on contemporary slang. In early twentieth-century usage a “regular feller†suggested a dependable or easygoing companion; applied to a woman the phrase humorously casts the girlfriend as “one of the boys†a playful nod to the companionate style of modern courtship emerging in the years just after World War I. The balancing phrase “and I’m her regular beau†restores the expected romantic pairing a typical vaudeville comic device that briefly toys with gender expectations before settling back into familiar roles. Three copies in OCLC with a fourth mistitled at Mississippi State none in commerce at the time of writing. M. Witmark & Sons unknown‎

‎Various places in California New York & Mexico 1960. Very good. Sixty items total including fifty-five photograps and five posters. Generally light wear. An attractive archive of visual materials including posters broadsides original photographs and real photo postcards that promote leading mariachi singers and musicians of the mid-20th century including Salvador López La Prieta Linda José Alfredo Jiménez Lucero Aguilar Miguel Angel Montes Francisco Avitia Ignacio Jaime Jorge de Crespo and Alfredo “El Mayoral†Gonzalez. The widow of legendary Mexican ranchero singer and actor Pedro Infante Dorantes enjoyed a string of hit songs in the 1950s and ‘60s including her recording of “Recuerdos de Ipacarai†with El Mariachi Mexico de Pepe Villa.

“Mariachi music has origins deep in Mexican history. The sound of its string instruments and its oldest rhythms are rooted in Mexico’s colonial times 1519-1810; people from Spain and African slaves and their descendants mingled with hundreds of American Indian cultures to create a new Mexican culture marked by many regions each with its own signature musical tradition. The music that was called ‘mariachi’ as early as the 1850s emerged from the ranches and small towns of western Mexico particularly in the states of Jalisco Michoacán Nayarit Colima and Aguacalientes. When big-city radio stations movies studios and record companies took mariachi music to new audiences throughout and abroad in the 1930s mariachi music was transformed into one of Latin America’s favorite musics. By the 1950s its standard sound of two trumpets three or more violins vihuela small guitar and guitarrón big bass guitar was set. Since then its repertoire of fast-paced songs expressive canciones rancheras ‘country’ songs polkas syncopated huapangos romantic boleros and more has been heard throughout the Americas and around the world†Smithsonian Folkways.

The present collection includes:

1 An original photograph 6 ½†x 7†of José Alfredo Jiménez in performance. Four are identified with holographic annotations on the verso while another is accompanied by a typed press caption indicating that the image captures Las Hermanas Huerta performing “Cantando Bajo el Recuerdoâ€.

3 Forty-one black-and-white real photo postcards 3 ½†x 5 3/8†of various musicians all identified in the negative or on the verso. The photographs of Alfredo “El Mayoral†Gonzalez and La Prieta Linda are autographed.

4 Six press photographs 8†x 10†of both solo performers and bands including two images of Lorenzo Elisea y Sus Piratas and a shot of singer Amalia “La Tariácuri†Mendoza 1923-2001 on stage.

5 Original photograph 13 ¾†x 11†on Irma Dorantes on horseback during a performance in New York.
