“The Wheelbarrow Polka.†With An Early Winslow Homer Lithograph Depicting a Notorious 1856 Massachusetts Election Wager.
Boston Massachusetts: Oliver Ditson & Co 1856. Lithographed sheet music title page after a photograph by Turner & Cutting. Folio. Some trimming and edge wear; image strong; good to very good. An early and scarce lithographic design by Winslow Homer executed during his apprenticeship at J. H. Bufford & Co. and among a small group of sheet music illustrations from his formative period. The image commemorates the widely publicized wager made by journalist and political figure Benjamin Perley Poore during the heated 1856 Massachusetts elections which were shaped by the collapse of the Whigs and the rise of the Republicans. Poore backing one slate generally identified with the Democratic or anti-Republican interest agreed that if his side lost he would wheel a barrel of apples from his home in West Newbury to Boston; upon defeat he fulfilled the pledge completing the roughly thirty-six-mile journey to considerable public attention. Homer’s composition after a now-lost photograph by Turner & Cutting shows Poore mid-route with the barrel mounted in a wheelbarrow accompanied by amused onlookers and a roadside sign indicating Boston. 1883. Very good overall. An interesting hand painted and roneoed ship's musical program. Produced for an Australian ship voyage 29th November 1883 with the proceeds of the performance "devoted to the relief of the suffering of a destitute and invalided steerage passenger". <br /> <br /> The evenings proceedings are roneographed inside the fold. It lists 15 performances including arrangements for violin and piano; a "letter song: Rip Van Winkle"; other songs a recitation; "Italian boat song"; and a vocal duet. The performers include Mr. & Mrs. Rignold and Signor Steffani. Mr. & Mrs. G. Rignold are recorded as having traveled from Adelaide to Sydney on 29th January 1883 on the ship "Birksgate" and in October 1886 they traveled on the ship "Hanroto" from Hobart to Melbourne with Mr. & Mrs. Lohr all of them described as "Theatrical". Signor Steffani is listed in the Sand's Sydney Directory for 1883 at 129 Phillips St. and in 1895 as a "teacher of singing" at 56 Elizabeth St. ancestry dot com. In fact the performances by "professionals" were most likely money making efforts for the performers who traveled repeatedly between various ports in Australia. One wonders if the money collected actually went to relieve the suffering of "a destitute and invalided steerage passenger" unless that is Mr. Rignold or Mr. Steffani. <br /> <br /> The R. M. S. John Elder made voyages between London and Australia see article in the Sydney Morning Herald referring to arrival from London on 15 July 1885 just 6 months after this voyage on the NLA website. It seems possible that this voyage was only in Australian waters as the Rignold's were already in Australia in January 1883. <br /> <br /> The cover of the program is hand painted with a background design of gingko leaves daffodils and a dragon fly with a tropical island view superimposed. On blue coated paper folded with the number 1 penciled at lower left of the front. In some spots the text of the reproduction is faded and it has been re-written by hand in purple ink. Short closed tear bottom edge. Folded folio 8 3/4 x 13 1/2". The paper is speckled with white dots akin to some unusual sort of bleaching perhaps related to the paper making process as it skirts the cover illustration. <br /> <br /> An unusual survival. unknown

New York: Slugs' in the Far East 1967. Vintage flyer for several nights of performances held at the historic East Village jazz club. Flyer advertises performances held between February 7 through March 5 1967 with performers including Jackie McLean George Benson Kenny Dorham Stanley Turrentine and Sun Ra and His Astro-Infinity Music.<br /> <br /> Robert Schoenholt and Jerry Schultz opened Slugs' Saloon named after G.I. Gurdjieff's "terrestrial three-brained beings" from his "All and Everything" trilogy in Manhattan's East Village in 1964. New York regulations forbade the use of "saloon" and the venue name was soon changed to Slugs' in the Far East due to its East Village location. By the mid-1960s the bar was hosting regular jazz performances and soon became closely associated with Sun Ra whose Arkestra would play regular gigs every Monday as noted on the flyer on offer as "Sun Ra and His Astro-Infinity Music." By the late 1960s Slugs' hosted a number of prominent jazz musicians. including Sonny Rollins Albert Ayler and Ornette Coleman among many others. The club shut down in late 1972 several months after regular performer Lee Morgan was shot to death at the bar by his common-law wife Helen Moore.<br /> <br /> 5.5 x 8.5 inches framed to 8.5 x 11 inches. Henriette Sontag sollte ihre Amerikatournee, ganz nach Vorbild der berühmten Jenny Lind, mit sensationellem Erfolg absolvieren und ihre Rivalin Marietta Alboni übertrumpfen. Der aus Ungarn stammende Bernhard Ullman hatte zuvor schon den Pianisten Henri Herz dem amerikanischen Publikum vorgestellt. - Mit Sammlernotiz in Bleistift. 32 Bll. Ca. 340:420 mm. Gefaltet. Bemerkenswerte Sammlung von Wandanschlägen des Königsberger Stadttheaters, einem der renommiertesten Theater in Preußen und im Deutschen Reich. Die an Höhen wie Tiefen reiche Geschichte des geschichtsträchtigen, im März 1808 erstmals eröffneten Hauses - das schon kurz danach abbrannte und nach seiner Wiederherstellung im Dezember 1809 neueröffnet wurde - zeitigte eine ganze Reihe an bedeutenden Erstaufführungen, darunter Schillers "Wilhelm Tell" (1810) und "Die Jungfrau von Orléans" (1811), die ebenso wie Goethes "Iphigenie auf Tauris" und der "Götz von Berlichingen" (beide 1815) unter der Direktion von August von Kotzebue zur Aufführung gelangten; 1819 wurden Beethovens "Fidelio" und Webers "Freischütz" gegeben, 1830 Kleists "Zerbrochener Krug" und 1832 "Faust" (I). Richard Wagner war 1836/37 in Königsberg als Kapellmeister engagiert und ehelichte dort auch seine erste Gattin, die am Stadttheater engagierte Schauspielerin Minna Planer; 1879 wurde mit Emil Paur am Pult die deutsche Erstaufführung von Bizets "Carmen" gegeben und trat von dort ihren weltweiten Siegeszug an; 1927 fand schließlich die Erstaufführung Strauss' "Rosenkavalier" statt. Mit den schweren Luftangriffen auf Königsberg Ende August 1944, bei denen das Stadttheater bis auf seine Grundmauern niederbrannte, endet die Geschichte des renommierten Hauses. - Unter den hier vorliegenden Theaterzetteln finden sich u. a. die Ankündigungen zu Friedrich von Flotows Oper "Martha", Eduard von Bauernfelds Lustspiel "Die Bekenntnisse", Ferdinand Raimunds Zaubermärchen "Der Verschwender", Albert Emil Brachvogels "Der Sohn des Wucherers", Carl August Görners Zauberposse "Prinz Honigschnabel", Carl Maria von Webers Oper "Abu Hassan" oder Heinrich Laubes Tragödie "Graf Essex". - Einige Doubletten; beiliegend zwei Ansichtskarten und eine Verschlußmarke des Stadttheaters sowie ein Plan von Königsberg aus Meyers Lexikon.

Edizione originale. Esemplare proveniente dalla biblioteca di Giannalisa Feltrinelli, come da ex libris al contropiatto. Molto fresco e pulito, a grandi margini, in pregevole legatura moderna di pregio. Raro primo libro di Henri Beyle, pubblicato con lo pseudonimo «L.-A.-C. Bombet» (‘Stendhal’ sarebbe nato tre anni più tardi) nell’anno del tracollo di Napoleone. Beyle aveva puntato molto sulla carriera in seno all’impero, e rimaneva con un mucchio di debiti: cominciò dunque a pubblicare anche perché spinto dal bisogno. All’occhiello compare solo «Lettres sur le célèbre compositeur Haydn», che infatti occupano le prime 287 pagine e costituiscono la parte di gran lunga più importante del libro. Peccato, tuttavia, che esse siano state letteralmente rubate dalle lettere a Haydn di Giuseppe Carpani, pubblicate a Milano due anni prima, nel 1812: Stendhal opera una vera e propria traduzione delle «Haydine» non accreditata come tale, spesso libera ma assolutamente aderente, non solo agli episodi quanto ai giudizi musicali espressi dal musicologo italiano, preoccupandosi inoltre di retrodatare leggermente le lettere allo scopo di poter sostenere l’insostenibile, ovvero che il plagio fosse al contrario. «Bombet had not only plagiarized and shamelessly pillaged his - Carpani’s - book, but also impersonated its author» (Hermans, p. 46). -- «Among the ‘exquisite judgments’ of the great composers on which Stendhal prided himself, or the ‘appreciations of music in general’ which seemed to [a number of ‘Stendhalien’ critics] ‘to be stamped withe the recurrent Stendhal ideas,’ an attentive reading readily convinces one that the majority, and those the most important […] belong to Carpani. And consequently […] we are forced to conclude that in matters of musical esthetics, he modeled his judgement on that of Carpani, of whom he became not only the plagiarist but also the disciple» (Brenet, p. 438 tradotto da Gotwals, p. 448 nota). -- Seppure anche il resto dell’opera risulti un centone di fonti non dichiarate ma ormai da tempo scoperte dagli studiosi (persino la «vie de Mozart», che è pur indicata come tradotta da un autore tedesco — ma le vere fonti sono altre), e seppure l’appropriazione faccia buona parte dell’abituale bagaglio compositivo di Stendhal, in nessun altro caso tuttavia si verifica una situazione così imbarazzante come la traduzione quasi integrale di un libro impegnativo e di tale personalità, quale quello di Carpani. Il fatto è che Beyle «Come leggere dunque il libro di Stendhal, una volta ricordata questa storia?» — si chiede giustamente Arbo nell’introduzione all’edizione italiana del 1993. Parafrasando la tesi espressa da Claudon nel 2011, la risposta sta tutta nello stile, quello di Stendhal, che riscrive l’italiano rigorosamente neoclassico di Carpani per appropriarsi di una tema che allora stava al centro della sua vita (la Vienna vissuta al seguito di Napoleone) e della cultura europea. -- «As open letters flew between Carpani and Bombet, one editorial note in ‘Le Constitutionnel’ [… suggested] that whichever was the original it surely deserved to have been translated into the other language» (Hermans, p. 47). Stated second edition of rare Dutch sheet music for a piano piece inspired by Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. The central illustration on the front cover depicts a scene from the novel with Uncle Tom under threat of the whip by his master likely representing the villain of the novel Simon Legree. The subtitle reads "Non maitre dit Tom mon ame nest pasa vous! No master said Tom my soul is not yours!." The present musical score was written by Dutch composer Louis F. Revius 1833-1902 a cellist and sheet music publisher in The Hague. In 1852 he founded the Society for the Printing and Publishing of New Cheap Music with partner Achille Defossez. We locate a handful of copies in OCLC mostly in the Netherlands but otherwise at the British Library the University of Chicago and the University of Virginia. Correspondence Musicale unknown

Various locations in Texas and elsewhere 1926. Very good. Approximately 130 manuscript letters totaling 275 pages written on a variety of paper sizes and stationery many with original transmittal envelopes plus a handful of printed ephemera. Letters arranged chronologically in several manila folders and housed in an archival folder. Original mailing folds general wear. A unique collection of manuscript letters mostly sent to Larkin C. Rogers of Mineral Wells Texas. Larkin C. Rogers Charlie or Larkin to his family began studying at the Kidd-Key Conservatory of Music at Sherman Texas in 1915. Friends and family write to him there occasionally sending him notices of musical events and throughout the correspondence are receipts for his orders for musical scores. Larkin’s mother and sister Nancy try to get him musician jobs in the Mineral Wells area but times are hard. His mother’s letters are long chatty and detailed; as such she provides good local color on her particular area in North Texas. In May 1917 Larkin’s mother writes: “How are you all coming in about the War excitement Think you’ll have to go And are you patriotic enough to want to go I see all musicians who can read music well are wanted and will be trained after joining on some instrument - I suppose suitable for the bands. Then when they’re not needed in the one they’re used in the hospitals. I like that better for you - if you do go - than to have to be in the fighting. They say the music is a necessary thing - so they have to have them. You’d better get to learning some band instrument - how do you like a piccolo†<br /> <br /> Larkin’s brother Edwin is already in the Army training near Waco and is overseas by June of 1918. In May 1918 Larkin’s mother again suggests he might like to enlist. By April she is urging him: “For we can never have universal peace till the Huns and all such are conquered. No one part is as essential as another - and where you are best fitted to serve it is your duty to get into - so leave no stone unturned to get into a band either in Waco or Camp Bowie.†By May he has enlisted but is not yet in a band - training at Camp Travis near San Antonio where he asks his mother to come in order to help him find a band. By October 1918 he is overseas. Larkin’s mother continues to provide motherly advice in her letters including lecturing him against smoking. At this point there is a long absence of news from him - and his family fears the worst.<br /> <br /> By May 1919 Larkin is shipped back to the States and admitted to the Army hospital at Oteen North Carolina. His mother writes with home remedies and fears that he is in for an “unmentionable disease.†In a sign of the times however he has influenza and bronchial complications. By this time his parents him they have moved to Dallas mentioning that although they still get mineral water to drink from their hometown of Mineral Wells the Dallas area is flat and at a lower altitude. Larkin’s sisters are friendly and sometimes humorous; they write him about music recitals and tease him about a “cootie garage†under his nose. Larkin informs them that a woman near the hospital is allowing him to practice at her piano. His mother visits him at the hospital and is quite upset that he is sometimes bedded down with a patient with hereditary syphilis. In January 1920 his mother learns that all places of amusement in Ashville have been closed because of flu which worries her as he is still not completely recovered. She knows about the flu as they all have had it in Dallas. His mother reads that there is complete vocational pay for disabled soldiers; she tries to obtain the disability pay for Larkin in order to take a concert pianist course. Larkin’s sister Lois in Williamsburg Virginia wants him to apply to a new music school in Richmond where she gets a teaching job - not to go to the Domrosch School in New York as she complains that it is "full of Jews and has an atmosphere which kills fineness." However she highly recommends New York in general: "Boston is a place. New York is life - a world - an experience which must be in every life before it is complete. You are an atom – but there is no place where life as a tiny atom receives such consideration and such kindness if its good!"<br /> <br /> By January 1921 Larkin is out of hospital and studying again in Sherman. He gives his first post war recital in April. His brother Edwin has a job with the Dallas engineering department. In 1923 Nancy causes a flap and panic when she quarrels with her sister Lois and the music school in Virginia and goes off alone. Lois begs her mother to stop writing her altogether as it is too stressful. Both Nancy and Larkin end up in New York City in the music scene and their parents end up back in Mineral Wells. Their mother writes Larkin a very nasty anti-Semitic letter about the rumor Nancy is going to marry a Jew. She fulminates also about the illicit and dreadful drinking that Americans seem to have slipped into. The last letter from Larkin’s father indicates that the two sisters and Larkin plan to combine households and stay in New York. An interesting collection of one Texas family’s correspondence centering on a young musician who also served in the First World War before returning to his life in music. Im Hauptprogramm wurde "Die Wiener in Berlin" gegeben, Karl Eduard von Holteis beliebte Posse von 1824, deren Erfolg der Autor dann mit seinen "Berlinern in Wien" zu wiederholen versuchte - Liederspiele, in denen Holtei auf witzig-moralisierende Weise die idiomatischen Unterschiede der beiden Stadtvölker ausbeutete. - "Karlsbad. Mit hoher Präsidial-Bewilligung wird heute Samstag, den 31. May 1828 von der Sänger- und Schauspielergesellschaft, unter der Direktion der Therese Schantroch aufgeführt: Das Räthsel. Lustspiel in 1 Akte in Alexandrinnern, von Kontessa [...] Hierauf: Die Wiener in Berlin. Simulated wood softcovers red lettering & illustration on front cover red plastic comb binding as issued minor wear rubbing some scuffing to fore-edges still VG- copy; 2nd - 4to. 8 leaves typescript 5 on onion-skin paper - 3 on ruled paper typed in red & black rust marks to upper corner minor creasing still VG. First edition of this very scarce sales promotional catalogue for the Empire Producing Co. which partnered with Rotary Clubs Fire Departments Public Schools and many other non-profit organizations from California to Texas up to Chicago for fundraising theatre productions. Pitched as a way to motivate organization membership advertise to the community and helping solve the “juvenile delinquency problems in every town by giving the youngsters something to do†Empire organized community entertainment such as Uncle Ezry’s Hayloft Jamboree. They fielded reps in every territory provided sets scripts entertainers directors seed money and advertising and would use the local talent to augment post-World War II America’s enthusiasm for country music. They typically targeted smaller towns and supposedly were generating from $ 500.00-$ 1400.00 per production in 1949. The typescript sheets by Mr. Cole show that although his quotas for the July 1945-1946 year were $ 500000 he only succeeded in contracting 61 shows in Texas Southern and Midwest towns which actually generated about $ 175000 of which Empire would have received half.
