Huddie Leadbetter, in arte "Leadbelly", pancia di piombo, era un gigante per stazza. Non rifuggiva dallo scontro fisico e incuteva timore ai bianchi. Per questo conobbe spesso la galera, a volte ingiustamente. Ma era anche molto bello d'aspetto, e amava le donne sposate. Per tutte queste ragioni i guai gli piovvero addosso come grandine. E per questo iniziò a cantare il blues. Incontrò Blind Lemon Jefferson e suonò a lungo con lui, fece jam session in bettole buie e sporche con Woody Guthrie e Cisco Houston, incantò John A. Lomax, il più importante etnomusicologo americano, che gli fece incidere centinaia di meravigliosi brani, stregò il Governatore Allen che infine lo graziò, fece risse con mariti gelosi e musicisti rivali, sperperò migliaia di dollari in whisky, bordelli e vestiti. La sua forza gli permetteva di suonare la chitarra con una potenza mai sentita prima. I suoi versi erano talvolta cupi come la notte e affilati come lame, altre volte dolci come il miele, spesso poetici come la luna. E scossero il pubblico, da allora fino ai nostri giorni. "Non fu un'ispirazione, fu la ispirazione. Se non fosse per lui, non sarei mai stato quello che sono. Non penso che sia realmente morto. All pages separated and notched along the inner edge from once being bound within an album and then neatly cut out and light toning throughout a complete but good only copy. For voice and piano. Plate number 11016-5. This copy is a curious variant that prints a different title on the cover than that above the music. It is not to be confused with the 1908 song "My Japanee" written and composed by Louis L. Comstock for the production The Isle of Spice. This 1909 song by Ade and Luders for the production The Old Town is from the point of view of a Japanese character and its language is about as problematic as one would assume given the time and place in which it was written; though it pokes fun at Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado with the singer stating that the Japanese people have since "moved along a peg or two" its attempt to portray any type of a progressive or accepting view is mired from where its sentiment begins like so much writing of that time. Despite this or perhaps because of it the piece remains a meaningful even if forgotten piece of American musical theater history. 2 SS. 4to. "Geehrter Herr Doctor! Ihr Schreiben v. 21. dM wurde mir hierher nachgesendet, wo mir kein anderes Papier zur Verfügung steht, als diese Blätter. Wenn Sie erklären, daß Ihnen der animus injuriandi fehlte, den ich nach der Faßung Ihres Angriffes annehmen mußte, so stehe ich nicht an zu sagen, daß dann auch bei mir der Anlaß fehlt, mich über Ihre Person hinwegzusetzen. Meine Erwiderung wollen Sie dann als an Sie persönlich gerichtet ansehen. - Über die fraglichen Puncte werden wir uns wohl nicht einigen können. Die vielen Widersprüche in Wagner's Aufstellungen laßen sich nicht aufheben. Es wird dann darauf ankommen, welche Meinung oder Richtung in einer Frage bei ihm überwiegt. Und da ist es zweifellos, daß W. der Wißenschaft gegenüber sich ablehnend verhielt, auch gegenüber der Naturwißenschaft, wenngleich er der Letzteren ab und zu gerecht zu werden suchte. Als Literat werden Sie wohl einsehen, daß eine Erklärung in dem Sinne, daß W. die Wißenschaft 'verlacht' habe (wie sie in dem Briefe an das Wagnerdenkmal-Comité lautet) empörend ist. Solche Eruptionen soll man wohl nicht der Öffentlichkeit übergeben. Gerade dagegen habe ich meine Stimme erhoben. Solche Citirungen sind nicht scharf genug zurückzuweisen. Ich habe also nicht gegen Aufzeichnungen mündlicher Äußerungen im Allgemeinen mich erklärt, sondern nur gegen Heranziehungen solcher Art. Sie hätten daher mit Ihrer Kritik der 'Unwißenschaftlichkeit' etwas vorsichtiger sein können. Es ist übrigens nicht meine Absicht, Sie zu belehren oder belehren zu wollen, sowie ich mich gegen jeden Versuch, mir Ihre Ansicht zu octroyiren, ablehnend verhalte. Ich muß übrigens gestehen, daß ich von einer 'Schlappe' oder 'Abfuhr' (einer im diplomatischen Verkehr wohl nicht üblichen Bezeichnung) nichts verspüre - vielleicht fehlt mir die Intelligenz hiezu. Wenn Andere auf Ihrer Seite stehen, desto beßer für Sie. Wollen Sie es mir überlaßen, 'meine Reputation nicht zu schädigen' - dieser Rath erscheint mir überflüßig. - Daß Sie mit solcher Wärme für ideelle Fragen eintreten, gereicht Ihnen zur Ehre. Nur gestatten Sie mir als Älterem die Bemerkung: Laßen Sie sich nicht binden u. behaupten Sie Ihre Freiheit! [...]". - Guido Adler gilt als Begründer der Wiener Musikwissenschaft. "A scholar, writer, critic, and founder of the field of Musicology, Guido Adler was an important figure in international music circles for nearly fifty years [...] As a teacher Adler’s impact was enormous. In addition to the many students who went on to become important musicologists in their own right, he founded Quarterly for Musicology, created scholarly festivals on Haydn and Beethoven, published numerous authoritative works of musicology and began publishing Monuments of Music in Austria – a work he edited for forty-four years" (Hargrett Library, Univ. of Georgia).

An die "Musikalische Rundschau" bzw. wohl ihren damaligen Herausgeber Josef Graf (1847-1908): "Ihre 'Mus: Rundschau' habe ich bisher nicht erhalten, sondern nur durch einen Abonnenten 2 Nrn. gelegentlich zu Gesicht bekommen. Ich kann daher die gewünschten Auskünfte nicht ertheilen. Aber selbst wenn ich gehörige Einsicht in Ihr an sich gewiß löbliches Unternehmen hätte, könnte ich wohl nur im mündlichen Austausch etwa wünschenswerthe Anregungen geben. Zu einem eingehenden schriftlichen Gutachten fehlt es mir leider jetzt an der Zeit [...]". - Leicht knittrig und stellenweise leicht gebräunt; beiliegend ein auf Trägerpapier montiertes Portrait (Zeitungsausschnitt).
