Farm-Work And Words Signed
Angus Scotland: Finavon 2013. Paperback. As New. P/B 98 pages condition is As New Signed by the author. Farming is probably the oldest industry in the world and early man would have used a piece of tree branch with a crude point to stir or dig the soil to achieve a suitable mould or tilth to enable seed to germinate better and flourish as a crop. Eventually digging sticks made way for wooden ploughs pulled mostly by oxen horses mules camels and buffaloes. Greeks Romans Anglo-Saxons and the Chinese were some of the early innovators in making the ploughs. By the 18th century ploughs were fitted with cast iron mould boards that turned the soil over more efficiently and were pulled mainly by horses. Nowadays reversible or one-way ploughs pulled by tractors is the norm for preparing fields for tilling sowing and planting etc; so giving maximum yields if all things are considered equal. Irrespective of what modern science has done in helping to grow crops to sustain as much of the world's population as possible the plough still plays the most important part in producing food.

Finavon paperback

UK: Faber and Faber 1975. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 5.25" x 8. h/b 184 pages condition is Very good. Help is at hand for those who enjoy cooking but hate the whole paraphernalia of weights and measures - now complicated by the partial introduction of the metric system. Pamela Dixon's new book can be used with nothing more in the way of measuring equipment than a tablespoon a yoghurt carton and a one pint milk bottle. The most inexperienced cook will be able to follow her straightforward numbered instructions for a series of delicious recipes for every kind of dish from an inexpensive supper snack to a classic roast or a sustaining stew. Recipes for basic methods and sauces are given at the beginning of the book and there is a section devoted to desserts many of them based on fresh seasonal fruits and nearly all quick to prepare. the 'value fro Money' section speaks for itself and the whole book keeps the problem of ever-increasing food bills very much in mind.

Faber and Faber hardcover

Chambers Robert
Managing Canal Irrigation : Practical Analysis from South Asia
Cambridge University Press 1988. Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 6" x 9.25. P/B 279 pages condition is very good. The many billions of dollars invested in canal irrigation in recent decades have had disappointing results. Rarely have projected benefits in well-being or production been achieved. In consequence in the mid-1980s further vast sums are being spent throughout the Third World on programmes for rehabilitation canal lining on farm development and farmers' organisation. In this book Robert Chambers shows that much of this policy and practice is based on misleading research and misdiagnosis. When applied to the complexity and uniqueness of canal irrigation systems the normal professionalism of civil and agricultural engineers agronomists economists and sociologists leaves gaps which are keys to better performance. In successive chapters five such gaps are analysed and presented: main system management including the scheduling and delivery of water and communications; canal irrigation at night; management of canal systems jointly by farmers and officials; professional conditions and incentives for irrigation managers; and methods for diagnostic analysis to identify cost-effective actions for improvement. Managing Canal Irrigation has been written for policymakers irrigation managers consultants researchers trainers and teachers. It challenges all concerned with improving the performance and anti-poverty impact of canal irrigation whether in government departments aid agencies consultancy firms training and research institutes or universities to re-examine their beliefs biases and actions. By going beyond the limits of normal professionalism the book presents a new syllabus for training a new agenda for research and development and points to new policies and to practical action to be taken in the field.

Cambridge University Press paperback

Electronics for Works Electricians
Blacklick Ohio U.S.A.: McGraw-Hill 1976. Soft cover. Very Good. 6" x 9. P/B 267 pages condition is very good minor edge wear. To many works electricians electronic equipment may be unfamiliar but its use in workshops factories and process plants is increasing; for example electronic devices incorporating transistors and diodes are replacing electrical devices incorporating relays. This book will provide an electrical craftsman who may have had no formal training in electronics with background information not normally included in electrical engineering courses and also with practical information about electronic components and circuits now in use and how circuits are selected for particular applications. The first seven chapters cover the basics : direct and alternating current resistors capacitors inductors and transformers; chapters eight to sixteen give an up-to-date picture of the fields of linear and digital electronics all at a level acceptable to the practical craftsman. Electronics for works electricians will be useful wherever electronic equipment has to be serviced and repaired. It is the first book on the subject to be published primarily for electricians and will be of great value not only to individual craftsmen but also to maintenance managers who have to train staff to look after unfamiliar equipment. The book is ideally suited for use in conjunction with the course with the same title offered by the Production Engineering Research Association and for similar courses.

McGraw-Hill paperback
