A small wormtract to upper margin of ab. 20 leaves no loss of letters. � First edition of the first volume of this very important journal founded by Lavoisier and his friends collaborating in establishing THE NEW SCIENCE of Anti-Phlogistic theory in chemistry. Crosland in "The two French Revolutions" and "The Imperial Despotism of Oxygen" claims that for a clear understanding of the CHEMICAL REVOLUTION THE NEW JOURNAL of ANNALES DE CHIMIE can be rightly considered as FUNDAMENTAL as the "Traite �lementaire de Chimie".<br><br>"A third and most important instrument was the establishment of a new scientific journal edited - and dominated - by the votaries of the "new chemistry". The first number of this journal of the Annales de chimie appeared in 1789 the year of the Revolution. Its editors were besides Lavoisier his early disciples - Guyton Berthollet Fourcroy and Monge - with the addition of three new recruits: the Strassbourf metallurgist the Baron de Dietrich Jean-henri Hssenfratz and Pierre Auguste Adet."DSB VIII p.81.<br><br>LAVOISIER'S paper on COMBUSTION pp. 19-30 contains his important interpretation of the phenomena of combustion in air making the fundamental distinction between burning and combustion. ‎8 volumes demi-maroquin vert bronze de l'époque à petits coins, dos lisse orné de filets dorés, titre doré, monogramme "V.S.", 4 planches gravées. Tête de collection correspondant à la période durant laquelle Lavoisier collabora à la revue. On y trouve son 'Mémoire sur la combustion du fer' et, avec Berthollet, leur 'Rapport d’un mémoire de M. Chaptal sur quelques propriétés de l’acide muriatique oxygéné' (t. 1), ses 'Observations sur la platine et Eaux anti-incendiaires' (t. V), un extrait des Registres de l’Académie Royale des Sciences (t. VII). On y trouve également des articles d’Haüy, Chaptal, Ingen-Housz, Monge, Senebier, etc. "Since the 'Journal de Physique' was opposed to the new doctrines, Lavoisier participated in founding in 1789, the 'Annales de Chimie' at the suggestion of Adet in which papers on the antiphlogistic chemistry were published" (Partington). ‎Très rare édition originale de ces études de minéralogie et de chimie, une grande partie de louvrage concernant plus particulièrement les météorites, une des grandes passions du scientifique. Nombreuses figures dans le texte.Il a été relié avant la page de titre un demi-feuillet reprenant toutes les distinctions de lauteur (la liste est longue !).Envoi autographe signé au verso du premier feuillet blanc : « Monsieur De Bois Baudran (sic) with the best (?) regard of J. Lawrence Smith ».John Lawrence Smith (18181883) Chimiste et minéralogiste américain. Il a publié de nombreux articles sur la chimie analytique et la minéralogie, notamment Mineralogy and Chemistry, Original Researches (1873). Sa collection de météorites était la plus belle des États-Unis, et à sa mort, il la légua à Harvard. La médaille, décernée tous les trois ans par La National Academy of Sciences pour des études sur les corps météoriques porte le nom de J. Lawrence Smith en son honneur.La dédicace est adressée à Paul-Emile Lecoq de Boisbaudran (1838-1912), chimiste français. En 1874 il publie Spectres lumineux, spectres prismatiques, et en longueurs d'onde destinés aux recherches de chimie minérale, un des ouvrages fondateurs de la spectroscopie. En 1875, à l'aide de ces méthodes, il découvre les indices d'un nouvel élément chimique. Il appelle cet élément le gallium. C'est une consécration pour la théorie de Mendeleïev qui en avait prédit les caractéristiques sous le nom d'« eka-aluminium ».‎

Champion des théories de Descartes, Van Helmont et William Harvey, il fut l’un des premiers à soutenir la théorie de la circulation pulmonaire. Il attira l'attention sur l'importance des processus chimiques en médecine. Estimant que les processus chimiques jouaient un rôle important dans le corps humain, il déduisait que leur étude pouvait contribuer à la qualité du diagnostic et du traitement, point de vue très controversé à cette époque.‎
