Although three systems are now being used successfully all have certain advantages and disadvantages and the final choice of a particular system for a country will necessarily be a compromise. The purpose of this book is to provide in clear easily understandable terms and with the minimum of mathematics and colorimetry the basic principles of colour television with particular reference to the PAL system. The treatment adopted is the result of the author's long experience with the BBC Engineering Training Department lecturing and developing colour equipment for training purposes. The IMTSC system is dealt with in some detail because it was the first colour television system to be of practical importance and many of its features are basic to all other systems. The main disadvantage of NTSC is the occurrence of differential phase distortion ; the other systems now in use namely PAL and SECAM were developed in an endeavour to overcome this defect. The major part of the book is devoted to the PAL Phase Alternating Line variant since this system has been adopted for Great Britain. Simple and delay line PAL are described fully and particular emphasis is given to the immunity of PAL from hue distortion in the presence of differential phase distortion. The SECAM system developed in France presents several features of technological interest and the significance of these is indicated. Having described all three systems the author summarises their distinguishing properties and compares their relative advantages and disadvantages. The provision of numerous diagrams and tables including detailed block diagrams of the coding and decoding equipment make this an invaluable practical guide not only for students but also for broadcasting engineers who today have to be acquainted with the handling recording and conversion of the signals of all three systems. <br/> <br/> Newnes Butterworths paperback‎
