br. Nel 1967 Manganelli dirige la serie italiana di una collana Einaudi. A preoccuparlo è la veste grafica, che con il suo opaco grigio rende i volumetti simili ad "antichi, nobili epitaffi": "E si veda il bell'egualitarismo del procedimento, che pareggia miopi, presbiti, ipermetropi, daltonici ed astigmatici in una comune, edificante inettitudine a leggervi alcunché" commenta. Basterà questo passaggio di una comunicazione "di servizio" per far capire che tipo di consulente editoriale sia stato Manganelli: eccentrico e brillante, sempre pronto a sfoderare uno humour di volta in volta giocoso, paradossale, corrosivo. Ma non ci si inganni: Manganelli è stato un editor (e traduttore) tutt'altro che sedizioso: disciplinatissimo, piuttosto, duttile e minuzioso. Un editor capace di progettare collane e costruire libri, suggerire titoli, periziare traduzioni con estroso rigore: "... qualche volta la traduttrice tende a dar più colore di quanto non competa a questa gelida carne..." scrive di una Ivy Compton-Burnett che gli era stata sottoposta. Ma capace soprattutto di stendere pareri di lettura e risvolti dove astratto furore dello stile, schietta idiosincrasia e verve beffarda celano una micidiale precisione di giudizio: "La sua pagina sa di virtuosa varichina, i suoi periodi vanno in giro con le calze ciondoloni..." (qui la vittima è Doris Lessing). Una precisione, tuttavia, che nel rifiuto sempre si premura di spogliarsi di ogni drasticità: "Il mio parere è negativo, ma senza ira".

br. Avviare un'impresa editoriale implica, da sempre, una buona dose di coraggio. Ma nel caso di Aldo Manuzio, che nel 1495 si propone di stampare libri greci guardando oltre i ristretti confini dell'Italia, sarebbe meglio parlare di temerarietà. Il suo rivoluzionario disegno comportava infatti difficoltà tali da scoraggiare chiunque, giacché esigeva, oltre che un fiuto fuori del comune, collaboratori di prim'ordine e con competenze linguistiche per quell'epoca rare - persino a Venezia, dove pure viveva una florida colonia greca; e manoscritti, non meno rari, su cui fondare le edizioni; e incisori di eccezionale abilità tecnica, capaci di creare tipi che gareggiassero con la grafia dei più eleganti copisti. Senza contare la difficoltà forse maggiore: il numero, inevitabilmente ristretto, dei possibili acquirenti. Ma di fronte a questi scogli Manuzio non arretra: e vara il suo programma editoriale con la grammatica greca di Costantino Lascaris, procuratagli da uno scout d'eccezione, Pietro Bembo. Altre meraviglie seguiranno: dalla prima, monumentale edizione di Aristotele a Sofocle - proposto nel 1502 nel nuovo formato (i cosiddetti libelli portatiles) con cui ormai da un anno aveva genialmente ampliato il suo pubblico -, da Tucidide ed Erodoto a Euripide, Omero e Platone. Nei vent'anni della sua attività Manuzio riuscirà a imporre non soltanto un modello di editoria ammirato in tutta Europa, ma un modo nuovo di accedere ai testi, svolgendo così un ruolo che era stato sino ad allora prerogativa dei grandi maestri della letteratura e della filologia.
