All'alba del terzo millennio, tuttavia, il mondo contadino non solo si presenta in molte forme nuove e inaspettate, ma sembra addirittura incarnare una risposta chiave per soddisfare i fabbisogni alimentari mondiali nella direzione di uno sviluppo sostenibile dell'agricoltura e delle economie rurali. L'autore del libro, un'autorità in materia a livello internazionale, dimostra che i contadini non sono affatto in decrescita; al contrario, sia nei paesi industrializzati che in quelli in via di sviluppo, assistiamo a fenomeni complessi di ritorno a un modo contadino di fare agricoltura.
