E questo risultato è stato accompagnato anche dal rinnovamento generazionale nella governane dell'impresa che comunque non ha voluto deflettere dal rispetto dei princìpi che avevano sin dall'inizio ispirato la vita dell'azienda. Sicché, nell'autobiografia di Atom, "continuità" e "discontinuità" non costituiscono astratte polarità concettuali o categorie storiografiche volte solo ad analizzare pratiche e strategie aziendali, bensì sono state di volta in volta ribadite nella faticosa costruzione di una leadership e di una reputazione mondiale. L’Annuario è suddiviso in due volumi per renderlo più maneggevole: il primo - che si apre con un report sulla distribuzione alimentare a cura di Sergio Auricchio in cui, oltre ad un'analisi congiunturale, si evidenziano le tendenze in atto, con raffronti con quanto avviene nella distribuzione europea e americana - fornisce dati e informazioni sulle centrali di acquisto, i gruppi nazionali e le aziende presenti nel territorio e una sezione dedicata alle aziende specializzate in alcune categorie di prodotti (tipici, biologici, per celiaci e vegani, surgelati); il secondo l’anagrafica di oltre 10.000 tra ipermercati e supermercati (ragione sociale, indirizzo, insegna, cedi, centrale di acquisto, superficie di vendita, numero di casse). Presenti anche le schede di aziende che operano solo nel canale discount.

Produzione, distribuzione e consumo del cibo hanno da sempre rilevanti «effetti collaterali» sulle comunità e sui territori. Tuttavia, oggi, i mutamenti materiali e concettuali legati alle diverse fasi industriali della nutrizione incidono sulla vita degli uomini a tutte le scale: dalla dimensione minima dell'ambito domestico all'equilibrio ecologico globale. Questo volume intende appunto contribuire a una rinnovata consapevolezza della centralità storica del cibo, considerato nel suo inscindibile rapporto con il contesto sociale e fisico di cui costituisce l'ossatura. Nella prima parte dell'opera, professionisti di diversa estrazione disciplinare descrivono la concreta possibilità di innescare un circuito virtuoso di produzione, distribuzione e consumo del cibo, trasformando questa rete in un efficace dispositivo di progettazione dello spazio urbano-rurale. La seconda parte raccoglie invece puntuali riflessioni sugli effetti che le scelte politiche in materia di food hanno determinato nel paesaggio costruito, in un mosaico di interventi che finisce per diventare un'indagine sull'heritage delle filiere alimentari, e sul cibo come nuova forma di patrimonio culturale.
