I tredici uomini erano tutti picchettini, e si chiamavano Filippo Argnani, che all'epoca aveva quarant'anni, Marcello Cacciatori, che di anni ne aveva ventitre, Alessandro Centioni, ventuno, Gianni Cortini, diciannove, Massimo Foschi, ventisei, Marco Gaudenzi, diciotto, Domenico Lapolla, venticinque, Mohamed Mosad, trentasei, Vincenzo Padua, sessant'anni, che stava per andare in pensione e si trovava lì per puro caso chiamato all'ultimo momento per una sostituzione. Vincenzo era l'unico operaio veramente in regola assunto dalla Mecnavi. E ancora: Onofrio Piegari, ventinove anni, Massimo Romeo, ventiquattro, Antonio Sansovini, ventinove, e infine Paolo Seconi, ventiquattro. Tredici lavoratori morti come topi, come tredici era il giorno di quel mese, tutti asfissiati nel ventre della balena metallica. "Non credevo che esistessero ancora simili condizioni di lavoro, a Ravenna, alle soglie del Duemila", disse il procuratore capo della Repubblica Aldo Ricciuti che svolse le indagini. br. Veri e propri cacciatori di libri, gli agenti letterari risaltano come personaggi chiave nelle vicende editoriali del Novecento. Comparsi alla fine del XIX secolo in Gran Bretagna, essi hanno agito dietro le quinte della diffusione libraria internazionale, influenzando gusti, modi di pensare, immaginari individuali e collettivi. Eppure, benché le categorie interpretative di transnazionalità e transfert culturale abbiano ormai dimostrato il potenziale euristico che il libro tradotto e i traduttori offrono alla ricerca storiografica, queste figure sono rimaste a lungo escluse dal dibattito della comunità scientifica. Attraverso una documentazione in gran parte inedita, il volume ricostruisce la storia dell'Agenzia Letteraria Internazionale (Ali), fondata a Torino nel 1898 da Augusto Foà: la prima in Italia e una delle più antiche d'Europa. L'autrice analizza l'offerta editoriale dell'Ali, caratterizzata soprattutto dalla selezione di opere contemporanee straniere, e l'impatto della censura sulla sua attività, nell'Italia liberale e attraverso le diverse fasi del ventennio fascista. Che cosa mediava l'agenzia? E ancora, fra chi mediava (autori, case editrici, agenti) e fra quali piazze editoriali? Saggio in cui l'A. esordisce affermando la mancanza di un'arte vetraria nazionale che fa si' che si debba ricorrere alle produzioni straniere. A Napoli si fabbrica vetro comune ma si tratta di un'attivita' che non ha mai ricevuto aiuti e pertanto e' stata 'incapace di risorsa e di miglioramento'. 'Infatti il fabbricato vitreo monta a tal grado d'imperfezione che la nostra Capitale non ha un cristallo, una lastra, o altro genere di tal sorta ben formato, se non le provengono dalla Germania. Le nostre province di Levante sono obbligate a provvidersi da Venezia, e quelle di Abruzzo per una caraffa, per un bicchiere ricorrono a Roma... Fisserai una volta, o illustre genio Vesuviano, l'epoca atta a destarti dal vergognoso letargo del tuo avvilimento?'.
