The mapping and function theme introduced in Mathematics 11 is continued throughout this book. The opening chapter reviews and extends the function concept. The relationship between a function and its graph between operations on functions and the corresponding transformations of their graphs make the topic interesting and dynamic. The succeeding chapters on the quadratic exponential and logarithmic functions that were so successful in the classroom have been retained with changes that reflect the widespread use of calculators. The chapters on circular and trigonometric functions utilize the winding function approach to give further significance to the function idea. It takes its origin in two courses one elementary and one advanced which the author has given at intervals during the last ten years and has a two-fold purpose: first to serve as an introduction for students whose attainments in the Calculus include some knowledge of partial derivatives and multiple and line integrals; and secondly to provide the reader with the fundamentals of the subject so that he may proceed immediately to the applications or to the periodical literature of the day. It is inherent in the nature of the subject that physical intuition and illustration be appealed to freely and this has been done. However in order that the book may present sound ideals to the student and also serve the mathematician both for purposes of reference and as a basis for further developments the proofs have been given by rigorous methods. This has led at a number of points to results either not found elsewhere or not readily accessible. Thus Chapter IV contains a proof for the general regular region of the divergence theorem Gauss' or Green's theorem on the reduction of volume to surface integrals. The treatment of the fundamental existence theorems in Chapter XI by means of integral equations meets squarely the difficulties incident to the discontinuity of the kernel and the same chapter gives an account of the most recent developments with respect to the Dirichlet problem. Exercises are introduced in the conviction that no mastery of a mathematical subject is possible without working with it. Since that time we and our colleagues at various institutions have had experience teaching its material to a large number of students. We therefore felt it appropriate that a second edition should be prepared that would reflect the experience we have had. The changes to the basic core the unasterisked sections of the book are minor and involved the rewriting of a few sections and the addition of supplementary exercises. We have also added between ten to fifteen percent of new material most of it in asterisked optional sections. A brief summary of the more important changes is as follows: the section on logical possibilities has been rewritten; a new section on counting techniques has been added; Bayes theorem replaces geometric probabilities; the section on the law of large numbers and central limit theorem has been split in two; the section on linear equations has been rewritten and a flow diagram added; the section on the inverse of a matrix has been rewritten; the material on Markov chains has been expanded; the material on linear programming has been completely rewritten; game theory has had minor rewriting; the section on equivalence classes in communication networks is new; and the section on computer simulation is new.
