‎First editions. The first paper concerns the Argument over the principle of least action, relating to the famous controversy - and one of the ugliest scientific controversies - between Koenig and Maupertuis. ""In 1751 a sensational new argument began when S. König published some critical remarks on Maupertuis’s principle of least action (1744) and cited a letter of Leibniz in which the principle was, in König’s opinion, formulated more precisely. Submitting to Maupertuis, the Berlin Academy rose to defend him and demanded that the original of Leibniz’ letter (a copy had been sent to König from Switzerland) be presented. When it became clear that the original could not be found, Euler published, with the approval of the Academy, ""Exposé concernant l’examen de la lettre de M. de Leibnitz"" (1752), where, among other things, he declared the letter a fake. The conflict grew critical when later in the same year Voltaire published his Diatribe du docteur Akakia, médecin du pape, defending König and making laughingstocks of both Maupertuis and Euler.""(DSB) - Enestrom No. 199.The second paper - Enestrom No. 200.‎

‎Self-organized criticality: An explanation of the 1/f noise. - [REVOLUTIONIZING EVOLUTION: THE SELF-ORGANIZED CRITICALITY (SOC) THEORY]‎

‎(Litho, The American Physical Society), 1987. Royal8vo. In the original blue printed wrappers. In ""Physical Review Letters"" Vol. 59, Number 4, July 27, 1987. A few traces are having been bend to extremities. Small label with subscriber's name printed on to back wrapper. Otherwise a fine and clean copy. Pp. 381-84. [Entire volume: 381-519, (5) pp.].‎

‎First printing of Bak, Tang and Wiesenfeld landmark paper in which they proposed their self-organized criticality (SOC) theory or the Abelian sandpile model: the mechanisms by which complexity arises in nature. It is one of the very few evolutionary models to challenge Darwinism. It is regarded as one of the most profound and fundamental theories put forth in the later part of the 20th century and the paper is one of the most frequently-cited papers in the last few decades. Its concepts have been applied across fields as diverse as geophysics, physical cosmology, evolutionary biology and ecology, bio-inspired computing and optimization (mathematics), economics, quantum gravity, sociology, solar physics, plasma physics, neurobiology and many others.SOC is typically observed in slowly driven non-equilibrium systems with extended degrees of freedom and a high level of nonlinearity. ""The nonlinear dynamics approach encapsulated in GCT envisions self-organization as an asymptotic process of approaching stability through a series of intermediate states (also known as evolution). There exists, however, a fundamentally different process known as self-organized criticality (SOC) in which an avalanche-like transformation rapidly moves the system into a self-organized mode. A popular metaphor for SOC is the sandpile paradigm. If additional sand grains are randomly added on top of a sand pile then inevitably an instance will occur when local steepness of the slope surpasses a certain critical threshold thus causing local failure of structural stability. The excess of material will cascade into adjacent areas of the pile causing their failures as well. Thus an avalanche will occur, shifting the entire sandpile into a new stable state. What is fundamentally important in this process is that a random local event quickly propagates through the entire system, thus establishing longrange correlations within the system"" (Rosenfeld, Global Consensus Theorem and Self-Organized Criticality).""Ask the average person, What is the theory of evolution? and you are likely to get answers like ""natural selection"", or ""survival of the fittest"", or ""Darwin's theory"". Because these ideas are systematically taught in classrooms, they may represent the only evolutionary theory people know. But, ask, What is the theory of Earth evolution? you will likely get a blank stare, or at best a superficial discussion of the fossil record. The Earth as a multi-faceted evolutionary system that undergoes continuous change through time was incorporated in the National Science Education Standards, even if it is absent from many contemporary curricula and common perceptions. Darwinism, however, is not the only mechanism of evolution. If we define evolutionary change as any process that leads to increases in complexity, diversity, order, and/or interconnectedness then there are at least three distinct mechanisms, or theories of evolution: elaboration, self-organization, and fractionation."" ‎First printing of Hölder's extensive and important paper on symmetric groups.Hölder owed his interest in group theory and Galois theory primarily to Kronecker, but also to Felix Klein, in whose seminar at Leipzig Hölder participated soon after receiving his doctorate. Hölder turned his attention first to simple groups. Besides the simple groups of orders 60 and 168 already known at the time, he found no new ones with a composite order less than 200. Nevertheless, he considered his method to be ""of some interest so long as we do not possess a better one suitable for handling the problem generally."" Such a general method is still lacking, despite the progress and great efforts of recent years. (DSB).He is famous for many things including: Hölder's inequality, the Jordan-Hölder theorem, the theorem stating that every linearly ordered group that satisfies an Archimedean property is isomorphic to a subgroup of the additive group of real numbers,‎

‎[Berlin, G. Reimer, 1832]. 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from ""Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik. Hrsg. von A.L. Crelle"", 1832, Pp. 189-192.‎

‎First appearance of Jacobi's very first paper on class number formula. The search for a class number formula probably began with Gauss, but the first formula in print was proposed by Jacobi (1832). He conjectured it on the evidence of some results of Cauchy in the theory of circle division, and his own brilliant extrapolation (or einduction"" as they called it then) from numerical results. Jacobi's formula was correct, but by no means proved by him. In a memorial speech for Jacobi, Dirichlet later said ""I believe it should be mentioned, regarding the previously unknown origin of this result, that Jacobi's communication is a noteworthyexample of shrewd induction, even though it is not possible to base a rigorous proof on circle division" it appears necessary to use essentially different principles, involving integral calculus and the theory of series, which were only later introduced into the subject. ‎[Berlin, G. Reimer, 1831]. 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from ""Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik. Hrsg. von A.L. Crelle"", 1831, Pp. 145-69.‎

‎First printing of Lamé and Glapeyron seminal paper which constitute one of the very earliest works on the theory of elasticity.Lame's stress ellipsoid, here presented for the first time is an alternative to Mohr's circle for the graphical representation of the stress state at a point. The surface of the ellipsoid represents the locus of the endpoints of all stress vectors acting on all planes passing through a given point in the continuum body.""During their service in St. Petersburg, these two engineers wrote their important memoir ""Sur l'équilibre interieur des corps solides homogénes"" [...]. This memoir owes its importance to the fact that it contains not only a derivation of the equations of equilibrium (which were already known at that time from the work of Navier and Cauchy) but also some applications of these general equations to the solution of problems of practical interest. In the first section of the memoir they deduce the equations of equilibrium using Navier's notion of the molecular forces and show that the same equations are obtained by using the concept of stresses, introduced by Cauchy. In the second section the stresses at a point of an elastic body are studied and it is shown that if, for each plane passing through the point, the corresponding stress is represented by a vector drawn from that point, the ends of all such vectors will be on the surface of an ellipsoid. This is the so-called 'Lamé stress ellipsoid'."" (Timoshenko, History of Strength and Materials Pp. 115-6).""Following his graduation in 1820, he went to Russia with his friend Bénoit Clapeyron. There he was appointed director for the School of Highways and Transportation at St. Petersburg and introduced mechanical testing for the iron used in the construction of suspension bridges. Praised by Todhunter and Pearson for the clarity of his exposition and the depth of his though, Lamé's greatest contributions were made through his lectures and textbooks. He wrote extensively on elasticity and was the first to advance the theory of failure based upon an ultimate tensile stress. His name is immortalized by the ""Lamé Equations"" for determining the strength of thick cylinders"" (Bibliotheca Mechanica, P. 193).‎

‎Chicago, The University of Chicago Press, (1953). 8vo. In the original blue printed wrappers. Light miscolouring and wear to extremities. Paper label pasted on to verso of back wrapper. Otherwise a fine and clean copy. VIII, 71 pp.‎

‎Seventh impression of Carnap's seminal publication of his semantical period. Here Carnap presents a clear and detailed account of the application of logic and mathematics in empirical science and the central importance of the analytic/synthetic distinction herein.Carnap thought that the logic of science could be fruitfully applied to the problems of quantum theory as well. In particular, the final sections of Foundations of Logic and Mathematics (1939, 24, 25) suggest that the vexed question of the ""interpretation"" of the wave-function can be resolved by appreciating that theories of modern mathematical physics operate with ""abstract"" terms which are implicitly defined, in the manner of Hilbert, in an axiomatic system (and thus require no ""intuitive"" or ""visualizable"" meaning) but which still relate to empirical phenomena (experimental measurements) indirectly. (Cambridge Companion to Carnap). These thoughts anticipate Carnap's later conception of the ""partial interpretation"" of theoretical terms.Rudolf Carnap (born 1891 in Ronsdorf, Germany, died 1970 in Santa Monica, California) was an immensely influential analytic philosopher, who has contributed decisively to the fields of logic, epistemology, semantics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of language. He was one of the leading figures of the Vienna Circle, and a prominent logical positivist. He studied philosophy, physics and mathematics at the universities of Berlin and Freiburg, and worked at the universities of Jena, Vienna and Prague until 1935, when he, due to the war, emigrated to the U.S., where he became an American citizen in 1941. In America he became professor of the University of Chicago.‎

‎"ROBINSON, ABRAHAM.‎

‎Non-Standard Analysis. - [THEORY OF INFINITESIMALS]‎

‎Amsterdam, North-Holland, 1966. 8vo. Publishers full cloth with dust jacket. Both in fine condition. Previous owners signature to front free end paper.Otherwise completely clean throughout. A fine copy.‎

‎First edition of this foundational work in mathematics. In this book Robinson gave the first rigorous formulation of Analysis using infinitesimals. Both Leibniz and Newton had used the notion of infinitesimals when they developed the Differentail and Integral Calculus in the 17th century. As Leibniz argued the theory of infinitesimals implies the introduction of ideal numbers which might be infinitely small or large compared to the real numbers. However, neither he nor his disciples and succesors were able to give a rational development leading up to a system of this sort. As a result, the theory of infinitesimals gradually fell into disrepute and was replaced by eventually by the classical theory of limits. Robinson was the first to show that Leibniz's ideas in fact can be fully vindicated and that they lead to a fruitful approach to classical Analysis. He coined his model ""Non-Standard Anlysis"".‎

‎"TARSKI, ALFRED.‎

‎Pojecie Prawdy w Jezykach Nauk Dedukcyjnych (Polish). [The Concept of Truth in Formalized Languages]. - [FOUNDING MODERN LOGICAL SEMANTICS]‎

‎Warszawa, 1933. Small 4to. Orig. printed wrappers, sunned at the edges, but otherwise near mint condition, also internally. An excellent copy. VII, (1), 116, (1, - errata) pp.‎

‎The exceedingly scarce first printing of Tarski's most important and influential work, ""The Concept of Truth in Formalized Languages"", which founded modern logical semantics. The work appeared in an extremely small number, in Polish, and many copies of the article have later been destroyed, thus, the work is of the utmost scarcity. In this seminal article the Polish-American logician and mathematician Alfred Tarski devotes himself to ""the definition of truth"". ""Its task is to construct -with reference to a given language- a materially adequate and formally correct definition of the term ""true sentence""."" (Introduction, English translation, 1956). With this work the face of logic was changed forever. The ""Concept of Truth"" constitutes a landmark event in 20th century analytic philosophy, and it ranks as one of the most important contributions to symbolic logic, semantics and philosophy of language. In this work Tarski develops the semantic theory of truth for formal languages and determines the fact that no language can contain its own truth predicate. Tarski thus concluded that the semantic theory could not be applied to any natural language. -This was later used by e.g. Davidson to construct his truth-conditional semantics, and the problems solved by Tarski are some of the same that Russell and Whitehead struggled to solve in their ""Principia Mathematica"".Tarski (1901-1983) has contributed seminally to the fields of mathematics and logic in a number of ways, and together with Frege, Russell and Gödel, he now ranks as one of the most important contributors to the field of modern logic. At the time of Franz Brentano (1838-1917), one of the philosophers of the greatest significance for contemporary philosophy and in many ways a forerunner of present-day empiricism, it was very unusual for a metaphysician to acknowledge that philosophical investigation must go hand in hand with an analysis of language. Linguistic analysis has thus been almost totally limited to the pure empiricists of philosophy, who reject all forms of metaphysics. Meanwhile, ontologists and metaphysicians have been satisfied with the ordinary language and asked no questions about its possible limitations, merely dismissing the logical faults and adding the odd neologisms. Today, however, especially within the English speaking tradition, linguistic analysis has reached a degree unheard of at the time of Brentano, and it is now generally accepted that certain logical and epistemological problems can be solved only by forsaking ordinary language and substituting it for artificially constructed language systems that follow certain principles. Thus, difficulties that appeared within earlier philosophical doctrines are meant to disappear if the theory can be formulated more precisely, and one of the most important examples is the ""adequacy theory of truth"". Tarski shows that the concept of truth of the adequacy theory can be introduced in a perfectly exact way within the formalized language systems that are equipped with precise rules of interpretation, and thus he rids us of the usual misgivings against the concept of truth. And thus he has developed one of the most important theories of modern logic.""Tarski's investigations are of singular philosophical significance for another reason as well. Within the framework of semantics, which he founded and which Carnap later developed further, it becomes possible for the first time to introduce the notion of an analytic judgment (or an analytic statement) in a form that is both sufficiently general and of the utmost precision. This notion also plays an exceptionally important role in Brentano's philosophy, especially in his studies in formal logic."" (Stegmüller, Main Currents... p. 56). When constructing a semantical system, a vocabulary of the desired object language must be determined as the first. Then formulation rules must be specified, before the rules of interpretation are laid down, and finally the rules of application are supplied. The most important rules here are the rules of truth, and the concept of truth is one of the most important semantical concepts at all, for without them no understanding of the sentences within the system would be ensured. And, of course, the truth definitions must satisfy a condition of adequacy. ""...This form of an adequacy condition that must be satisfied by every semantical truth concept goes back to the Polish logician, Stanislaw Lesniewski. But it was the logician Alfred Tarski who above all made use of this notion, and who first studied in detail the possibilities of introducing a formally exact and materially adequate concept of truth into the precise languages of science. Carnap's accounts of semantical systems rest largely on the prior works of Tarski."" (Stegmüller, p. 311). Tarski also pointed out that it is necessary for all semantical concepts, and especially for the concept of truth, to strictly separate object language and metalanguage. Otherwise we would put ourselves in the unlucky position of being able to prove both a statement and its negation at the same time. In the English translation from 1956 of Tarski's works, ""Logic, Semantics, Metamathematics"", the bibliographical information about this article is erroneous.‎

‎This edition of the first treatise on the differential calculus, first published 1696, is the first with the commentaries by the famous French astronomer Nicolas-Louis De Lacaille, taken from his noted ""Leçons élémentaires de mathématiques"".""The Analyse des infiniment petits was the first textbook of the differential calculus. The existence of several commentaries on it - one by Varignon (1725) - attests to its popularity. The question of its intellectual ownership has been much debated. Jean Bernoulli, who is known to have instructed L’Hospital in the calculus about 1691, complained after L’Hospital’s death that he (Bernoulli) had not been given enough credit for his contributions. L’Hospital himself, in the introduction to his books, freely acknowledges his indebtedness to Leibniz and to the Bernoulli brothers. On the other hand, he states that he regards the foundations provided by him as his own idea, although they also have been credited by some to Jean Bernoulli. However, these foundations can be found, less explicitly, also in Leibniz, although Leibniz made it clear that he did not accept L’Hospital’s Platonistic views on the reality of infinitely small and infinitely large quantities.""(DSB).‎

This was bound in with his novel ideas on the wide subject of the theory of experimental design. He emphasized not merely the desirability but the logical necessity, in the design of an experiment whose results could not be freed from error, of maximizing efficiency (by devices such as blocks and confounding), and of introducing randomization in such a way as to furnish a valid estimate of the residual error. Whereas the time-honored practice in handling several factors had been to vary only one at a time during the experiment, Fisher pointed out that simultaneous variation was essential to the detection of possible interaction between factors, and that this change could be made without extra cost (in terms of experimental size and operational effort). Entrained with these innovations was the use of randomized blocks and Latin squares for the actual disposition of the test units."" (DSB)‎

The histoire d'arithmétique (1843) argued for a Pythagorean rather than a Hindu origin for our numeral system. Chasles based his claim on the description of a certain type of abacus, which he found in the writings of Boethius and Gerbert. The second work was a reconstruction of the lost book of Prisms of Euclid (1860). Chasles felt that the porisms were essentially the equations of curves and that many of the results utilized the concept of the cross ratio.
