‎TARSKI, ALFRED and BJARNI JÓNSSON.‎

‎Direct Decompositions of Finite Algrebraic Systems.[Notre Dame Mathematical Lectures. Number 5]. - [THE STARTING POINT OF JÓNSSON-TARSKI ALGEBRAS]‎

‎(Michigan), 1947. 8vo. Ogiginal printed wrappers, black cloth back-strip. A nice and clean copy of this lithoprinted publication. (6), 64 pp. + 2 leaves of maschine-written (probably mimeographed) corrections laid in loose.‎

‎First printing of Tarski and Jónsson's important first joint publication, which constitutes the starting point of the influential Jónsson-Tarski algebras and the Jónsson-Tarski duality. The important Icelandic mathematician and logician Bjarni Jónsson (born 1920) received his PhD the year before the present publication at the University of Berkely, under the supervision of Alfred Tarski, the great Polish-American who has contributed seminally to the fields of mathematics and logic in a number of ways, and who together with Frege, Russell and Gödel now ranks as the most important contributor to the field of logic. He is thus considered one of the four greatest logicians of all times.‎

‎BILLY, P. IACOBO de. [JACQUES de BILLY].‎

‎Diophanti Redividi, pars prior + posterior. In qua, non casu, ut putatum est, sed certissima methodo, &analysi subtiliore, innumera enodantur Problemata, quae (aliud quàm) Triangulum Rectangulum spectant. - [FOUNDATIONAL WORK IN THE EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF NUMBER THEORY]‎

‎Lugduni [Lyon], Apud Ioannem Thioly, 1670. 8vo. Contemporary half calf with simple gilding to spine. Gilt title-label to spine partly missing. Four tiny worm-holes to upper front hinge, just touching front free end-papers and nothing else. Minor edge-wear, but a nice, clean, and tight binding. Ex-libris stamps to title-page (one being R.D.-E. Gelin's, the other unlegible but probably a theological library). Mostly very faint marginal dampstaining to lower margin thorughout, not touching text. Neat old owner's name to inside of front board (Soldner). Without the two blank leaves between the end of the dedication and the beginning of the text (there is clearly no leaf with any text lacking there is either a pagination-error, or there has been one or two blank leaves between the end of the dedication and the beginning of the work. In the other copies that we have been able to find collations of, there has been no leaf a4 nor A1 either - there is no doubt that the text is complete), and without the blank leaf after the end of Part One, but with two blanks at the end of Part Two. (8) pp., pp. 3-302" 140 pp. + two blank leaves.‎

‎Etremely scarce first edition of Jacques de Billy's mathematical magnum opus, known primarily as ""Diophantus Redivivus"" (i.e. ""Diophantus Restored""), in which he gives some of the most important solutions to Diophantine problems, of which he was an expert. The work is highly important within the field of number theory and counts as one of the greatest testimonies to the early development of this branch of mathematics. The copy has belonged to the famous mathematician Johann Georg von Soldner (of the Soldner coordinate system). It was partly due to the rediscovery of Diophantus in the 16th century that Fermat reached his famous ""last theorem"" in the middle of the 17th century, when reading Diphantus' ""Arithmetica"" and engaging himself with the problems presented here. Jacques de Billy (1602-1679), a French Jesuit, who taught mathematics and theology and received the first professorship of mathematics at the Collège de Dijon, was highly interested in the problems that Diophantus had presented in his famous work, and some time before 1659, an active correspondence began between himself and Fermat, which led to, among other things, the his important ""Diophantus Redivivus"". The work includes many of Fermat's discoveries within the field as well as Billy's own take on them. Before a professorship of mathematics had been created at the Collège de Dijon, the mathematical enthusiast Jacques de Billy was master of studies and professor of theology. His love for mathematics meant, however, that he taught the students privately, and one of the most eager students that he thus privately taught was Jacques Ozanan, in whom Billy instilled a profound love for calculus. The only auction-records that we have been able to locate of the present work are that of Macclesfield (2004) and that of Honeyman (1978), both of which are without leaves between a3 and A2, thus lacking these two blanks (if they have ever been there). The Macclesfield-copy has the blank leaf after Part One and the two final blanks at the end of Part Two, but not the other (possible) blanks. The Honeyman-copy lacks all blank leaves, but only these, it seems.Brunet I: 946, stating ""Recherché et rare"" (collation: 302 et 140 pp.). Not in Poggendorf, not in Graesse. The previous owner Johann Georg von Soldner (1776-1833) was a famous German physicist, mathematician and astronomer, early on renowned for his great talent for mathematics (though almost completely self-taught). The Soldner coordinate system, which was in use until the middle of the 20th century in Germany, was named after him, as was the Ramaunajan-Soldner constant, but today he is probably primarily remembered for the final conclusion of light being diverted by heavenly bodies. It was Soldner that Einstein was accused of plagiarizing, when he calculated and published a value for the amount of gravitational light-bending in light skimming the Sun in 1911.""Soldner was simple and reserved in manner, and he valued ral scholarship for its own sake. His painstaiking observational work on the detection of motion among fixed stars could be of value only to future generations of astronomers and illustrates the unselfish spirit of his work. His writings are clear and concise, and he avoided repetionon of what was already common knowledge."" (D.S.B. XII:518).‎

‎First appearance of the founding papers of modern mathematical statistics, out of which grew Pearson's creation of Biometrics.""Founder of biometrics, Karl Pearson was one of the principal architects of the modern mathematical statistics. He was a polymath whose interests ranges from astronomy, mechanics, meteorology and physics, to biological sciences in particular, including...eugenics, evolotionary biology,heredity......Largly owing to his interests in evolutionary biology, Person created, almost single-handedly, the modern theory of statistics in his Biometric School at University College London.... In his creation of biometrics, out of which the discipline of mathematical statistics had develoiped by the end of the nineteenth century, Person introduced a new vernacular for statistics (including such termss as the standard deviation, mode, homoscedasticity, heteroscedasticity, kurtosis and the producct-moment correlation coefficient."" (Heyde in Statisticians of the Centuries). In the first paper offered here Person introduced the method of moments as a mean curve fitting assymetrical distributions (""point-binominals"") and he applies the theory to crabs and prawns. This is a general method for determining the values of the parameters of a frequency distribution. In the second paper offered here, Pearson develpoed the general formula to use for subsets of six types of frequency curves, now known as ""Pearson Type Curves"".In his seminal paper ""Regressin, Heredity and Panmixia"", the third papers offered here, Pearson introduced matrix algebra into statistical theory and also introducing 'eta' as a measure for curvilinear relationship, the standard error of an estimate, multiple regression and multiple and partial correlation, and devises the coefficient of variation as a measure of the ratio of a standard deviation to the corresponding mean expressed as a percentage. In the fourth paper he deals with the theory of probable erros and of correlations of errors...In the fifth paper he deals with the theory as involving multiple correlations...stature in biology is shown to be best reconstructed from measurements of long bones. The last paper offered deals with a variety of biological correlations, inheritance of characters etc. etc.G.M. Two smaller library stamps to title-page. Internally some browning and brownspotting, due to the paper quality. Overall a nice and tight copy. [Riccati-paper:] pp. 66-73. [Bernouilli-paper:] pp. 73-75. [Entire volume: (2), 532, (34) pp.].‎

‎The important first printing of Riccati's main work, his influential ""Animadversiones in aequationes differentiales secundi gradus"", in which the famous Riccati-equation is presented + Bernouilli's famous note on it.""In his ""Animadversiones in aequationes differentiales secundi gradus,"" published in Acta Eruditorum in 1724, Riccati suggested the study of cases of integrability [...] which is now known by his name. In response to this suggestion Nikolaus II Bernoulli wrote an important treatise on the equation and Daniel Bernoulli presented, in his Exercitationes quaedam mathematicae, the conditions under which it may be integrated by the method of separation of the variables. Euler also integrated it."" (DSB, XI).""In the supplement volume to Acta Eruditorum, Riccati's paper is immediately followed by Daniel Bernoulli' Notata (St. 5.). As the latter admitted in the Exercitationes, he had Riccati's paper in his hands for two days before it was sent to Leipzig. In this short paper Daniel Bernoulli first claims that equation (D) is not an appropriate example because by substituting dy=q it can easily (""Haud magno negotio"") be reduced to a first order differential equation."" (Die Werke von Daniel Bernoulli, 1996, Birkhäuser, Volker Zimmermann (edt). ""Riccati ( 1676 - 1754) was the son of a noble family who held land near Venice. His renown was such that Peter the Great invited him to come to Russia as president of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. [...]. Riccati carried on an extensive correspondence with mathematicians all over Europe. His work were collected and published, four years after his death, by his sons, of whom two, Vincenzo and Giordano were themselves eminent mathematicians. (DSB, XI).‎

‎"POST, EMIL LEON.‎

‎Finite Combinatory Processes-Formulation 1. [In: The Journal of Symbolic Logic, Vol. 1, Number 3, Sept. 1936]. - [A SIMULTANEOUS VERSION OF THE ""TURING MACHINE""]‎

‎[No place], 1936. 8vo. Extract, unbound, unstapled. Pp. 103-105.‎

‎The uncommon first printing of Post's seminal paper, in which he, simultaneously with but independently of Turing, describes a logic automaton, which very much resembles the Turing machine. The Universal Turing Machine, which is presented for the first time in Turing's seminal paper in the Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society for 1936 (same year as the present paper), is considered one of the most important innovations in the theory of computation and constitutes the most famous theoretical paper in the history of computing. ""Post [in the present paper] suggests a computation scheme by which a ""worker"" can solve all problems in symbolic logic by performing only machinelike ""primitive acts"". Remarkably, the instructions given to the ""worker"" in Post's paper and to a Universal Turing Machine were identical."" (A Computer Perspective, p. 125). ""The Polish-American mathematician Emil Post made notable contributions to the theory of recursive functions. In the 1930s, indepently of Turing, Post came up with the concept of a logic automaton similar to a Turing machine, which he described in the present paper [the paper offered]. Post's paper was intended to fill a conceptual gap in Alonzo Churchs' paper on ""An unsolvable problem of elementary number theory"" (Americ. Journ. of Math. 58, 1936). Church's paper had answered in the negative Hilbert's question as to whether a definite method existed for proving the truth or falsity of any mathematical statement (the Entscheidungsproblem), but failed to provide the assertion that any such definite method could be expressed as a formula in Church's lambda-calculus. Post proposed that a definite method would be written in the form of instructions to a mindless worker operating on an infinite line of ""boxes"" (equivalent to Turing's machine's ""tape""). The worker would be capable only of reading the instructions and performing the following tasks... This range of tasks corresponds exactly to those performed by a Turing machine, and Church, who edited the ""Journal of Symbolic Logic"", felt it necessary to insert an editorial note referring to Turing's ""shortly forthcoming"" paper on computable numbers, and ascertaining that ""the present article... although bearing a later date, was written entirely independently of Turing's"" (p. 103)."" ‎First publication of Hodge's seminal work on harmonic integrals. In the article Hodge showed that most of the elementary properties of harmonic functions could be extended to harmonic functional.""Hodge is famous for his theory of harmonic integrals (or forms), which was described by Weyl as ""one of the landmarks of twentieth century mathematics."" [...] Hodge's work straddles the area between algebraic geometry, differential geometry, and complex analysis. It can be seen as a natural outgrowth of the theory of Riemann surfaces and the work of Lefschetz on the topology of algebraic varieties. It put the algebraic geometry on a modern analytic footing and prepared the ground for the spectacular breakthroughs of the postwar period of the 1950s and 1960s."" (Gowers, The Princeton Companion to Mathematics, 2008).Hodge himself states in the introduction to the present work: ""In two papers I have defined integrals, which I have called harmonic integrals, which are associated with an analytic variety to which a metric is attached, and have established an existence theorem for them. More recently I have applied the theory of these integrals to the Riemannian manifold of an algebraic surface with the topological invariants of the Manifold. There is reason to believe that this method of considering the Abelian integrals attached to an algebraic variety will prove a powerful one, and I have thought it advisable to set out in the following pages an account of the principles on which the method is based."" In 1941 Hodge published the book ""The theory and applications of harmonic integrals"" which expanded and elaborated the ideas presented in the present article.‎

‎First printing of this important paper which coined the term ""cumulant"" within probability theory and statistics.Cumulants were first introduced by the Danish mathematician and statistician Thorvald N. Thiele in 1889. He, however, called them ""half-invariants"", a name that was not to be used for them in the future. It was not until the present work by the great statistical geneticist Ronald Fisher and the famous statistician John Wishart (eponym of the Wishart distribution) that these ""cumulants"" were given their name, the name that we still use today. According to the historian Stephen Stigler, the name ""cumulant"" was suggested to Fisher by Harold Hotelling. In another paper published in 1929, Fisher had called them cumulative moment functions. The present volume contains many other interesting and important mathematical papers, e.g. Carmichael's ""Expansions of Arithmetical Functions in Infinite Series"" (vol. 34), Mulholland's ""The Generalization of Certain Inequality Theorems Involving Powers."" (vol. 33), etc., etc.‎

‎The rare first printing of this highly important work of cryptography, which is the very first work to correctly describe Vigenère's cipher. ""Lindenfels, so far as I can ascertain, is the only writer who accurately presents both the tables and the directions of Vigenère."" (Charles J. Mendelsohn, 1940). The present work also constitutes the first Danish cryptographical work.""All European countries have a larger or smaller collection of crytographical works in their languages, whereas we in Denmark, as far as the author is aware, do not own a single letter thereof in the mother tongue. The author has therefore endeavoured, also in a scientific sense, not to be entirely unworthy in filling out this lacuna in the national literature. Both of these purposes unite in the ""pium desiderum"": to enable our young officials - in particular the military - to match also in this respect those of our neighbouring nations. It is necessary in times such as ours, not to lag behind foreigners, especially in these things, if we do not wish at all hours to succumb to them."" (from the ""Prereminder"" - translated from Danish in Franksen). ""In 1918, Charles J. Mendelsohn was made a captain in the Military Intelligence Division of the General Staff of the U.S. Army, in charge of decipherment of German codes. A classic scholar and faculty member of the history department in the College of the City of New York, he was launched by his experience into a lifelong study of historical ciphers and their originators. Among other things, this research resulted in two fundamental papers on Cardano and de Vigenère, respectively... With this background in mind we are hard put to find a more authoritative source on the history of the Vigenère cipher than the article by Mendelsohn. It is therefore noteworthy to read in Mendelsohn's abstract, that ""In all the literature of cipher, I know of only one writer who has correctly described Vigenère's cipher, and that was well over one hundred years ago."" In the body of the article Mendelsohn, referring to ""I.B. Lindenfels, Den hemmelige Skrivekonst (Copenhagen, 1819)"", expands on this remark... (see first quotation above). On this authority I have often relied on Lindenfels' work for factual information in past discussions. Yet, I have withheld his story which, lying dormant in the Danish Army Archives and some contemporary bibliographical accounts, is perhaps as fascinating as the topic he describes... Its title page was engraved, so Lindenfels proudly tells us, together with nine other illustrations by a young artist, H.C. Klingsey, employed as a map-maker by the Danish navy. It reveals that Lindenfels was a major of the artillery and a teacher of the Royal Pageans (cadets training for general staff and military engineering), at the Land Cadet Academy (infantry and horse), and at the Artillery Cadet Institute... In the ""prereminder"", Lindenfels assures the reader that he has done everything in his power to make the book as entertaining as possible. Simultaneously, however, he emphasizes that his choice of motto ""Ei blot til lyst"" (not only for pleasure) on the title-page, is made on purpose (see quotation from the Prereminder above)..."" (Franksen, pp. 215-17).Lindenfels does not invent or introduce an entirely new cipher, he does, however, in the present work, introduce a new practice that is to replace the simple substitution cipher or traditional nomenclature, and in fact he becomes the first to describe the seminal Vigenère cipher correctly. The work is divided into three parts, namely Simple substitution ciphers and nomenclatures" the Vigenère cipher" and a Supplement, all of about the same length. The supplement not only describes the history of ciphers and codes but also covers sign languages, both of thieves and deaf and mutes. Being the first such work in the Danish language, of course it arose some curiosity and excitement. It is evident from the subscription list that Kind Fredrik VI himself purchased 10 copies alone. For curiosity it can be mentioned that Lindenfels here mentions ""the newest galvanic and electric discoveries"" and ""the incredible bordering progress in physics and chemistry"", referring to Ørsted and inferring how Ørsted gradually worked towards his discovery of electromagnetism in 1820, about a year after Lindenfels had published his work. For a long and thorough description of the work and of Lindenfels, see:Franksen, Mr. Babbage's Secret. The Tale of a Cypher - and APL. (IBM).‎

‎First edition of Shannon's famous article in which he measures the entropy rate of English text to be between 1.0 and 1.5 bits per letter, or as low as 0.6 to 1.3 bits per letter.""A new method of estimating the entropy and redundancy of a language is described. This method exploits the knowledge of the language statistics possessed by those who speak the language, and depends on experimental results in prediction of the next letter when the preceding text is known. Results of experiments in prediction are given, and some properties of an ideal predictor are developed."" (From the introduction to the present article).""Natural languages are highly redundant"" the number of intelligible fifty-letter English sentences is many fewer than 26*50, and the number of distinguishable ten-second phone conversations is far smaller than the number of sound signals that could be generated with frequencies up to 20.000 Hz. ‎First appearance of Boole's main paper on the Calculus.George Boole is mostly known for his ""An Investigation on the Laws of Thought"" 1854 and his developments of a form of symbolic logic, called Boolean Algebra. But he also did importent work on the Calculus, Differential Equations and the Theory of probabilities. In 1843 the schoolmaster Boole finished a lengthy paper on differential equations, combining an exponential substitution and variation of parameters with the separation of symbols method. The paper was too long for the Cambridge Mathematical Journal. Gregory, and later De Morgan, encouraged him to submit it to the Royal Society. The first referee rejected Boole's paper, but the second recommended it for the Gold Medal for the best mathematical paper written in the years 1841 - 1844, and this recommendation was accepted. In 1844 the Royal Society published Boole's paper (the paper offered), and awarded him the Gold Medal, the first Gold Medal awarded by the Society to a mathematician.‎

Erling Sverdrup was a founding father of mathematical statistics and modern actuarial science in Norway. He exercised profound influence on how statistical studies were formed and executed in Norway. The Norwegian edition of his statistics textbook Laws and chance variations had a great impact on a generation of Norwegian actuaries and statisticians, and his lecture notes in actuarial mathematics were decades ahead of contemporary textbooks. Unfortunately, these lecture notes were never translated and widely publicized. He has made important contributions to life-insurance mathematics, survival analysis and event history analysis, where he, at an early stage, advocated the use of Markov chain models for studying disability. a number of important contributions have only appeared in lecture notes or technical reports.‎

‎First printing of Slepian's paper in which he used group theory to develop linear codes. In this work he also introduced the notion of a standard array, which greatly clarified the decoding problem"". (Millman, A History of Engineering & Science in the Bell System, 1984, p.53).‎

‎"CHURCH, ALONZO (+) EMIL L. POST.‎

‎Wisconsin, The Association for Symbolic Logic, 1936. Lev8vo. Entire volume one of ""Journal of Symbolic Logic"" (i.e. number 1-4), March, June, September, December 1936) BOUND WITH ALL THE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS in a blue half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Chinese library-stamp (red) and stamped inventory-number lower part of all four front wrappers. Minor bumping to lower corner of nr. 4, otherwise internally a very fine and clean copy of the entire volume. [Church:] Pp. 40-1"" 101-2. [Post:] Pp. 103-5. [Entire volume: 218 pp.].‎

‎First publication of Church's seminal paper in which he proved the solution to David Hilbert's ""Entscheidungsproblem"" from 1928, namely that it is impossible to decide algorithmically whether statements within arithmetic are true or false. In showing that there is no general algorithm for determining whether or not a given statement is true or false, he not only solved Hilbert's ""Entscheidungsproblem"" but also laid the foundation for modern computer logic. This conclusion is now known as Church's Theorem or the Church-Turing Theorem (not to be mistaken with the Church-Turing Thesis). The present paper anticipates Turing's famous ""On Computable Numbers"" by a few months. ""Church's paper, submitted on April 15, 1936, was the first to contain a demonstration that David Hilbert's 'Entscheidungsproblem' - i.e., the question as to whether there exists in mathematics a definite method of guaranteeing the truth or falsity of any mathematical statement - was unsolvable. Church did so by devising the 'lambda-calculus', [...] Church had earlier shown the existence of an unsolvable problem of elementary number theory, but his 1936 paper was the first to put his findings into the exact form of an answer to Hilbert's 'Entscheidungsproblem'. Church's paper bears on the question of what is computable, a problem addressed more directly by Alan Turing in his paper 'On computable numbers' published a few months later. The notion of an 'effective' or 'mechanical' computation in logic and mathematics became known as the Church-Turing thesis."" (Hook & Norman: Origins of Cyberspace, 250) The volume also contains first printing of Post's seminal paper, in which he, simultaneously with but independently of Turing, describes a logic automaton, which very much resembles the Turing machine. The Universal Turing Machine, which is presented for the first time in Turing's seminal paper in the Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society for 1936, is considered one of the most important innovations in the theory of computation and constitutes the most famous theoretical paper in the history of computing. 125).""The Polish-American mathematician Emil Post made notable contributions to the theory of recursive functions. In the 1930s, independently of Turing, Post came up with the concept of a logic automaton similar to a Turing machine, which he described in the present paper [the paper offered]. 103)."" (Origins of Cyberspace, pp. 111-12).Even though Post's work to some degree has been outshined by Turing's, the present paper is of seminal importance in the history of the foundation for modern computer logic and the ideological basis for the modern computer. The volume also contains the following important papers by W. V. Quine:1. Toward a Calculus of Concepts. Pp. 2-25.2. Set-theoretic Foundations for Logic. Pp. 45-57.Hook & Norman, Origins of Cyberspace, 2002: 250 + 356 Charles & Ray Eames, A Computer Perspective, 1973: 125.‎

‎First publication of Jacob Bernoulli influential dissertation in which he published the first correct solution to the isoperimetric problem both Johann Bernoulli and Leibniz had been seeking without success. The paper influenced both Leonhard Euler in writing his first research paper and British mathematician Brook Taylor to begin a dispute which has later been referred to as Taylor versus Continental mathematicians. ""It [the dissertation] was considered as a prodigy of sagacity and invention: and indeed, if the time be considered, it will not be too much to assert, that a more difficult problem never was solved."" (Bossut. A general history of mathematics. 341 p.).The isoperimetric problem is an ancient problem which dates back to antiquity and can be described as which curve, if any, maximizes or minimizes the area of its enclosed region?Euler, who had been taught by Johann Bernoulli, published his first paper in 1726 which was a note on the construction of isochronous curves in a resistant medium.DSB II, 48b.The following papers by Johann Bernoulli are also contained in the present volume:1.
