‎EULER, LEONHARD.‎

‎Vollständige Anleitung zur Integralrechnung. Aus dem Lateinischen ind Deutsche übersetz von Joseph Salomon. 4 Bde. - [A LANDMARK TEXTBOOK ON THE INTEGRAL CALCULUS]‎

‎Wien, Carl Gerold, 1828-30. 8vo. Bound in 4 contemp. hcalf. Gilt spines with gilt lettering. Very light wear to top of spine on vol. 2. A stamp on title-pages and a previous owners name. A printed paperlabel on all 4 frontcovers. A few corners a bit bumped. VIII,439IV,424VIII,439"VI,520 pp. and 3 folded engraved plates. Internally clean and fine.‎

‎First German edition (a translation from the Latin ""Institutiones Calculi Integralis"", 1768-70) of this landmark work on the integral calculus, being the most complete and accurate work on the subject at the time. It ""contained not only a full summary of everything then known on this subject, but also the Beta and Gamma functions and other original investigations"" (Cajori). The work exhibits Euler's numerous discoveries in the theory of both ordinary and partial differential equations, which were especially useful in mechanics.""(Euler) presents methods of definite and indefinite integration, having invented many of the methods himself, such as the use of an ""Euler substitution"" for rationalizing particular irrational differentials. His treatment is near exhaustive for integrals expressive as elementary functions. He also develops the theory of ordinart and partial differential equations and presents many properties of the beta and gamma function Eulerian integrals introduced by Euler earlier.""(Parkinson ""Breakthroughs"" 1768 M).Enestroem E 342, E 385, E 385 (The Latin edition). - Poggendorff I, 690.‎

‎"JORDAN, CAMILLE.‎

‎Commentaire sur Galois.‎

‎Leipzig, B.G. Teubner, 1869. 8vo. Bound in later half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In ""Mathematische Annalen"", Volume 1., 1869. Entire volume offered. Library stamp to front free end-paper and title-page. Internally a few light brown spots.. Pp. 141-160. [Entire volume: Pp. IV-636.]‎

‎First printing of the very first issue of the influential mathematical journal ""Mathematische Annalen"" containing Camille Jordan famous paper on Galois group theory. ""When Jordan started his mathematical career, Galois's profound ideas and results (Which had remained unknown to most mathematicians until 1845) were still very poorly understood. Jordan was the first to embark on a systematic development of the theory of finite groups and of its applications in the directions opened by Galois. Chief among his first results were the concept of composition series and the first part of the famous Jordan-Hölder theorem, proving the invariance of the system of indexes of consecutive groups in any composition series (up to their ordering). He also was the first to investigate the structure of the general linear group and of the ""classical"" groups over a prime finite field, and he very ingeniously applied his results to a great range of problems" in particular, he was able to determine the structure of the Galois group of equations having as roots the parameters of some well-known geometric configurations (the twenty-seven lines on a cubic surface, the twentyhypheneight double tangents to a quartic, the sixteen double points of a Kummer surface, and so on).Another problem for which Jordan's knowledge of these classical groups was the key to the solution, and to which he devoted a considerable amount of effort from the beginning of his career, was the general study of solvable finite groups. From all we know today (in particular about p groups. a field which was started, in the generation following Jordan, with the Sylow theorems) it seems hopeless to expect a complete classification of all solvable groups which would characterize each of them, for instance by a system of numerical invariants. Perhaps Jordan realized this" at any rate he contented himself with setting up the machinery that would automatically yield all solvable groups of a given order n."" (DSB)""There have been few mathematicians with personalities as engaging as that of Galois, who died at the age of twenty years and seven months from wounds received in a mysterious duel. He left a body of work-for the most part published posthumously less than 100 pages, the astonishing richness of which was revealed in the second half of the nineteenth century. Far from being a cloistered scholar, this extraordinarily precocious and exceptionally profound genius had an extremely tormented life. A militant republican, driven to revolt by the adversity that overwhelmed him and by the incomprehension and disdain with which the scientific world received his works, to most of his contemporaries he was only a political agitator. Yet in fact, continuing the work of Abel, he produced with the aid of group theory a definitive answer to the problem of the solvability of algebraic equations, a problem that had absorbed the attention of mathematicians since the eighteenth century"" he thereby laid one of the foundations of modern algebra. The few sketches remaining of other works that he devoted to the theory of elliptic functions and that of Abelian integrals and his reflections. on the philosophy and methodology of mathematics display an uncanny foreknowledge of modern mathematics.""‎

‎"MINKOWSKI, H. (HERMANN). - THE UNIFICATION OF SPACE AND TIME (PMM 401).‎

‎Raum und Zeit. (Space and Time). Vortrag von der 80. Naturforscherversammlung zu Köln.‎

‎Leipzig, S. Hirzel, (1909). 4to. Bound with orig. printed wrappers in fine later hmorocco. (Bound by Anker Kyster Eftf. 1968). Titlelabel in leather with gilt lettering on frontcover. Offprint (Sonderabdruck) from ""Physikalische Zeitschrift"", 10. Jahrgang. No. 3. Seite 104-111, here paginated as offprint pp. 1-8 and with textfigs. Clean and fine.‎

‎First edition - in the scarce offprint-issue - of this milestone paper where Minkowski was the first to conceive that the relativity principle formulated by Lorentz and Einstein led to the abandonment of the concept of space and time as separate entities and to their replacement by a fourdimensional ""space-time"", THE SPACE-TIME CONTINUUM. In the opening passage Minkowski declared: ""Henceforth, space by itself, and time by itself, are doomed to fadeaway in the shadows, and only a kind of union of the two will preserve an independent reality.""The work was simultaneously published in ""Jahresberichte der Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung"". Leipzig 1909, in ""Verhandlungen der Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte"". Leipzig, 1909 (a shorter version) and as here. The paper was read 20th of September 1908 at a Conference in Cologne only a few months before his death. Here ""he introduced the notion that made possible the expansion of the Relativity Theory of Einstein from its specific to its general form. The technical description of Minkowski's hypothesis is the four-dimensional Space-time continuum.... Minkowski's space-time hypothesis was in effect a restatement of Einstein's basic principle in a form that greatly enchanced its plausability and also introduced importent new developments. Hitherto natural phenomena had been thought to occur in a space of three dimensions and to flow uniformly through time. Minkowski maintained that the separation of space and time is a false conception"" thet time is itself a dimension, comparable to lenght, breadth and height: and that therefore the true conception of reality was constituted by a space-time continuum possessing these four dimensions. This strongly reinforced Einstein's objections to absolute concepts and supported his view of the relativity of events in nature."" (PMM No. 401).‎

‎"ARCHIMEDES.‎

‎De iis quae vehuntur in Aqua Libri Duo. A’ Federico Commandino Urbinate in pristinum nitorem restituti, et commentariis illustrati. - [THE FOUNDING WORK ON HYDROSTATICS]‎

‎Bologna, Alessandreo Benacci, 1565. 4to. In contemporary blank cardboards with marbled paper back-strip. Ff 8-12 with small brown dot to lower outer margin, not affecting text. A fine copy. [4], 43 ff. + 1 blank. (Erroneously paginated f. 33 as 25 and f. 44 as 43).‎

‎First edition of Commandino's translation, and accompanying mathematical additions, of Archimedes' work on floating bodies, being the foundational work of hydrostatics. Commandino's own mathematical additions include the very first attempt to fill the gap in the incomplete proof of propositions 2 in book II of the Latin translation made by the Flemish Willem Moerbeke in 1269. ""This edition of Commandino remained the reference until the early twentieth century and the work of Heiberg after the discovery of the Archimedes palimpsest"". (D.B.I).""In hydrostatics [Archimedes] described the equilibrium of floating bodies and stated the famous proposition - known by his name - that, if a solid floats in a fluid, the weight of the solid is equal to that of the fluid displaced and, if a solid heavier than a fluid is weighed in it, it will be lighter than its true weight by the weight of the fluid displaced. We owe to Archimedes the full exposition of the doctrine of levers and pulleys."" (PMM, p. 44)The work consists of two parts: The first is to the effect that the pressure excerted by any part of a fluid on the fluid is downward. The second postulate states that the pressure of the fluid on a body placed in it is exerted upward along the perpendicular through the center of the body. However, Book II contained many sophisticated ideas and complex geometric constructions and did not have the appeal of Book I. Only after Greek geometry was combined with algebra, trigonometry, and analytical geometry, the present work being one of the earliest attempts to do this, and the field of mechanics reached the maturity to handle the concepts of equilibrium and stability that Archimedes introduced was Book II seriously studied. It then became the standard starting point for scientists and naval architects examining the stability of ships and other floating bodies.""Archimedes left to posterity his famous treatise ""On Floating Bodies"", which establishes the physical foundations for the floatability and stability of ships and other maritime objects. Yet since this treatise was long lost and also simply ignored by practitioners, it took many centuries before Archimedes' brilliant insights were actually applied in ship design and ship safety assessment."" (Nowacki, The Heritage of Archimedes in Ship Hydrostatics: 2000 Years from Theories to Applications).A Greek manuscript dating from about the ninth century and containing both books of On Floating Bodies was translated into Latin by the Flemish Dominican William of Moerbeke in 1269, along with other works of Archimedes from other manuscripts. The tracks of the Greek manuscript were lost in the fourteenth century, but Moerbeke's holograph remains intact in the Vatican library (Codex Ottobonianus Latinus 1850) [5, 8]. Moerbeke's Latin translation was the source of all versions of On Floating Bodies from his time until the twentieth century.""In 1543 Tartaglia [...] the Moerbeke translations of On the Equilibrium of Planes and Book I of On Floating Bodies (leaving the erroneous impression that he had made these translations from a Greek manuscript, which he had not since he merely repeated the texts of the Madrid manuscript with virtually all their errors). Incidentally, Curtius Trioianus published from the legacy of Tartaglia both books of On Floating Bodies in Moerbeke's translation (Venice, 1565). The key event, however, in the further spread of Archimedes was the aforementioned editio princeps of the Greek text with the accompanying Latin translation of James of Cremona at Basel in 1544. Since the Greek text rested ultimately on manuscript A,On Floating Bodies was not included. A further Latin translation of the Archimedean texts was published by the perceptive mathematician Federigo Commandino [...], which the translator supplemented with a skillful mathematical emendation of Moerbeke's translation of On Floating Bodies (Bologna,1565) but without any knowledge of the long lost Greek text.""
