The author traveled up the Cuara, a tributary of the Orinoco, in 1897, 1898, 1900-1901 and describes the natural history and the native people. He made valuable contributions to our knowledge of birds life in the Venezuelan forests. Six of his party of 14 died after a shipwreck and the 26 days journey through the wilderness to the nearest settlement. It has become a classic work on the area. The preface by J. Scott Keltie gives an historical overview of the author's travels. Goodman 828. Wood 192: 'A scarce and interesting book'.

"I have attempted to weave into my writing something of the fascination and spell of Africa, which bred in the solitudes of open plain and primeval forest, grip the traveller from first to last" (vii). The author explored the region about Lake Kivu and between Kivu and Ruwenzori in the Congo with good description of the native peoples and nature and with some emphasis on gorillas, elephants, lions, entomology, cannibals, the volcanoes, etc. The appendix lists the new species of butterflies and moths collected by the author and his wife who accompanied him.

The first half of the book describes the author's journey in 1901 to Baghdad, Basra, Bahirin, Muscat, Sherpore, etc around the Persian Gulf where he visits some areas off the beaten track. The second half of the book describes his stay on several Pacific islands including Tonga, Haapai, Fiji, etc and is remarkable for its explicit illustrations of cannibals, including one entitled 'Cannibals dragging prisoners to the ovens', two others showing cannibals slaughtering their victims. The author didn't seem too concerned about becoming a victim. There have been only two copies at auction in the last 25 years, the last at Sotheby's in 1997 selling at US$782, although it wasn't in as good a condition as this copy.

Radcliffe-Brown, in the introduction, pays the author tribute as collecting, 'by far the greatest part of the information about native life that we now possess'. With chapters on the totem, family life, kinship, marriage laws and customs, burial customs, childhood, religion, the Badimo, demi-gods, priest craft, ceremonies, sacrifice, folklore, proverbs, history, etc.
