br. Psicologia sociale "maligna" è l'espressione che Tom Kitwood ha coniato negli anni novanta per classificare "tutte quelle interazioni svalutanti e stigmatizzanti nelle relazioni di cura, che possono minare le necessità psicologiche, o addirittura l'identità profonda delle persone". Pur generalmente riconosciute come non intenzionali, esse sono assai comuni, costituendo di fatto un aspetto incontroverso, anzi spesso perfettamente accettato, della cultura assistenziale, nonostante i danni profondi che esercita sul contesto di cura. Ciò emerge con particolare forza con chi ha difficoltà a seguire i contenuti verbali, come ad esempio le persone affette da demenza: esse elaborano molti di tali messaggi a livelli non-verbali, avvertendo quindi chiaramente la generale negatività dell'atmosfera che le circonda. Il volume introduce e illustra, per la prima volta in Italia, con numerosi esempi le 17 categorie di interazione che costituiscono la psicologia sociale maligna e quelle, contrapposte, costituenti la psicologia sociale positiva. Il taglio fortemente pragmatico del testo offre agli operatori uno schema di riferimento e gli strumenti per riflettere e migliorare le loro relazioni professionali.
