Two contemporary Latin manuscripts laid in after p. 408 one two pages signed by joannes cont on hypochondriacs the other concerning a cure.

Sennerts complete works three volumes in six parts printed by Huguetan. Sennert was an influential German professor notable for his contributions to medicine and atomic theory. Daniel Sennert born in Breslau was a student and the professor of medicine at the University of Wittenberg the intellectual center of Lutheranism. He was a renowned physician and an extremely prolific and influential writer whose popularity in his time is clear from the many editions of his works many of which were translated into English. These are Sennerts complete works in six parts each with a separate dated title page printed in red and black. His Opera was first published in Paris in 1641 and this edition expanded . with the omission of Tabulae institutionum and the addition of Vita Danielis Sennerti Judicia virorum clarissimorum Methodus discendi medicinam De curatione infantium De arthritide Tragopodagra Luciani in Greek and Latin Exoterica Epitome librorum de febribus Epistolarum medicinalium una cum responsorii D. Michaelis Doringei centuriae duae. The Epitome is reprinted from the Epitome edited by Claude Bonnet-- Krivatsy. This edition is regarded as the best. Among Sennerts many achievements he was the first to introduce chemistry as a subject of the medical curriculum and to make a serious effort to harmonize the Galenic doctrines of medicine with those of Paracelsus. Besides giving early accounts of scarlatina and rubella Sennert added to the knowledge of scurvy dysentery and alcoholism. He was an able clinician but a believer in witchcraft.-- Garrison-Morton 61. Scarcely found on the market these volumes are a complete set of Sennerts studies and 17th century medicine. Sennert was known to apply astrology to medicine and the supernatural origins of disease. Junglemania.
New York: The Macaulay Co. 1933. 8vo. 310 pp. Illustrated title numerous photo plates. Beige publisher’s cloth brown lettering & palm tree front cover edgewear & rubbing to lower fore-edge occasional light toning w/ d.j. salacious cover art by Guischard of the good doctor injecting comely nude African maiden on front cover photo of “author†on spine minor dustsoiling creasing and minor chipping to lower right corner front cover still VG/VG- copy. First American edition of this very popular work in the United States published simultaneously in the UK as Junglemania: Exploring the Jungles for Science.“ The memoir was allegedly based on the author’s medical expeditions in Central Africa and Borneo at the behest of the Royal Society of Tropical medicine. However the rousing tale of adventure and lure of the jungle was quickly pulled in the UK due to many plagiarized passages from Owen Rutter’s 1924 novel set in Borneo “Passion Fruit.†The photographs also generated controversy as they mostly appeared to reproduce the popular RPPC’s sold to tourists in Borneo and the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine denied ever dispatching him even though he had been accepted as a member. Dr. Torrance was not to keep himself out of trouble as he was later arrested for murdering his third wife in Mexico while on honeymoon -- with a thermos flask. [African Americana]: [Medicine]: [Education]: [Hutchinson, James L]
Pair of Yearbooks Belonging to Pioneering Dr. James L. Hutchinson While a Student at Meharry Medical College the First Medical School to Train African American Doctors in the South
Nashville 1950. Very good. Two yearbooks: 244; 208pp. The first bound in blue textured cloth the second in maroon textured cloth each front cover stamped in gilt with a mounted photograph. Some scuffing to edges. Light thumb-soiling to texts previous owner's inscription in each volume. A pair of yearbooks once belonging to Dr. James L. Hutchinson of Shreveport Louisiana while a medical student at Meharry Medical College in Nashville in the mid-20th century. The yearbooks - the Meharrian for 1949 and 1950 - cover Hutchinson's last two years at the school and are chock full of photographs and information on the administration faculty students student organizations and campus life at the pioneering college. The last sections in each yearbook are comprised of advertisements from local vendors mostly medical suppliers. Meharry Medical College opened in 1876 as the first institution in the South designed to train African American doctors. At the time Hutchinson attended the school Meharry also trained dentists nurses dental technicians and medical technologists all of whom are represented in the yearbooks.

Meharry remains the largest private HBCU dedicated to training healthcare professionals. Dr. James L. Hutchinson established a medical practice in San Mateo California in the 1950s becoming one of the very first African American doctors to work in the Golden State. In addition to his family practice Dr. Hutchinson was one of the founding doctors of both Planned Parenthood and Project 90. Amazingly he is still practicing medicine today in his early 90s. Editions of the Meharrian from any year are rather rare. OCLC records a smattering of yearbooks at about a dozen institutions. unknown

Pharmacopoeia Londinensis: Or The NEW London Dispensatory. In VI Books. As Also the Praxis of Chymistry
London: Printed by T. Dawks for R. Chiswell M. Wotton et al. 1707. The Seventh edition corrected and amended. 8vo 877pp plus 3pp errata and ads at rear. Table of characters at front printed in two columns index at rear. Contemporary paneled calf red morocco spine label gilt tooled board edges. Expertly rebacked with original spine laid down and likely a newer label. Boards moderately rubbed. Corner chip to front endpaper title and prelims a bit soiled mild foxing throughout. An attractive copy.

Very nice copy of William Salmon's eccentric and popular London Dispensatory which blended vernacular medicine with Galenic practice and Paracelsian alchemy. This is a greatly expanded edition from the original 1676 issue which consisted of only 3 parts. Though it was not sanctioned by the College of Physicians Salmon's anti-establishment writing gave the book a broader and more accessible appeal. It went through numerous editions and was widely used by apothecaries surgeons and independent practitioners alike.

A cornerstone English medical compendium with fringe elements and in an attractive contemporary binding. . [Anonymous] [Medicine] [Quackery]
More precious than Rubies Cover title

New York: Gallia Laboratories Inc. 1926.

Promotional pamphlet for Kola Astier a product possessing "remarkable curative and stimulative properties quite unknown to any other preparation." According to the manufacturer Gallia Laboratories Kola Astier builds muscular strength fights fatigue relieves depression and "melancholia" stimulates the heart and helps in combatting bronchitis pneumonia and "senile debility." It also acts we're told as a "remarkable regenerator" for "tired overworked men and women."

Where did this cure for every ailment come from According to the company Dr. P. Astier recognized the amazing properties of the kola nut. "Long before the white man traversed the midnight jungles and the wild plains of mysterious Africa the natives were using the fruit of the Kola Tree to increase their physical stamina and powers of endurance. Finally when the first white explorers forced their way into the heart of the Dark Continent they too soon recognized the value of this gift of the Gods."

This text is accompanied by an illustration of spear-wielding African warriors. Other illustrations depict runners an apparently sick office worker and an exhausted home maker.

Unfortunately for the company the U.S. Agriculture Department determined that Kola Astier contained no ingredients capable of producing any therapeutic or curative effects claimed by the company.

In March 1933 the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey sought the seizure of 199 bottles of Kola Astier Granulated charging misbranding in violation of federal rules. Analysis by the U.S. Agriculture Department showed that the product consisted essentially of sugar 97.3% and small proportions of plant material including kola. A federal district court ordered that the 199 bottles be destroyed.

That judgment didn't stop Gallia Laboratories from promoting its miracle cure. In June 1943 the Federal Trade Commission charged the company with making false misleading and deceptive statements about its products. It ordered the company to stop claiming that Kola Astier had any therapeutic value in the treatment of any disorder.

This pamphlet is rare. OCLC shows no institutional holdings. None in commerce.

PHYSICAL DETAILS: 24mo 5 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches; 138 x 107 mm 8 pages in stapled wrappers.

CONDITION: Some staining soiling and a few small nicks to wrappers as well as rusting to staples.
