‎2 Letters Commending a Female Student About to Enter the Medical Field 1890s‎

‎1890. Women in Sciences Two letters commending a female medical student Clara Cowles who is about to enter the field. The first is an autograph letter signed and dated 16 March 1893. 1 page handwritten on National Homeopathic Medical College of Chicago letterhead from the desk of W. M. W. Davison M. D. 9 x 5 ¾ in. Excellent condition with two horizontal fold lines. Davison writes in part: "Miss Cowles Kindly I wish to congratulate you for your most excellent paper." This letter also comes with a business card from W. M. W. Davison again dated March 16th 1893 which verifies that "Miss C S Cowles has passed the examination in Histology and Physiology and her standing is 90 in the former and 100 in the latter."<br /> <br /> The second is a typed letter signed and dated January 24 1896. 1 page on The People's Health Journal letterhead from the desk of editors L. D. Rogers M.D. and Ida Wright Rogers M.D. two married doctors. 8.5 x 11 in. They write:<br /> <br /> "Miss Clara CowlesEl Dorado Kas.<br /> Dear Miss Cowles:--<br /> Your favor of the 17th. together with your first examination papers came duly to hand. We have returned the papers. They were excellent. <br /> We thank you for the names of your two friends and will write to them. Let us hear from you often. <br /> Yours very sincerely Drs Rogers & Rogers"<br /> <br /> Very good condition with two vertical fold creases and one horizontal one at center. Small tear at upper left crease. Comes with a joint business card for Drs. Rogers & Rogers and inscribed in pencil on verso is the address for Dr. E. S. Reed Dentist. Four more inscribed business cards from doctors are included. One of the cards is from Dr. E. S. Reed and has a neat inscription on verso in ink declaring that Miss C. S. Cowles "has a standing of 98 in Dental-Surgery for the session of 1892 & '93" signed by E.S. Reed Professor of Dental Surgery. Interesting 19th century correspondence related to a young woman's medical education and those who offered her professional support and encouragement. unknown‎

‎Mixed-gender Surgery Scene Circa 1920s‎

‎Original photo of a surgery in action in the operating room. Photo measures 9.75" x 7.5" on black photographer's board measuring 11.25" x 9.75" inches. Circa 1920s. Albumen print. Name written in pencil on verso "Dr. Thos Mcalan" . Photo shows surgeons operating on a body that lies on an operating table face unseen with a metal bucket for drained fluids at the foot of the table. One surgeon sits near the head of the body apparently pouring something towards the face which he has clasped at the chin while he looks intently down at his work. A female nurse stands watching over while two male practitioners assemble their tools including scissors and syringes on the patient's abdomen. Another nurse arranges instruments at a small side table while another one in the background is mostly hidden. Above her is a set of chairs that is likely the observation deck of the operating room. Another male attending medical practitioner stands the furthest into the background washing his hands at a porcelain sink. The surgical room itself is highly visible with rich details of instruments layout and practices. That the men are the only ones in contact with the body while the women appear to be cleaning instruments also suggests the hierarchy of the time. Women entered the medical field via nursing before paving a way for themselves as doctors surgeons and administrators. Some light staining on photograph does not obstruct the clarity of the image. While his published work on the circulation of blood is considered the most important of his academic life Harvey also made significant contributions to embryology with the publication of his book Exercitationes de Generatione Animalium in 1651. In this book he established several theories that would set the stage for modern embryology and addressed many embryological issues including conception embryogenesis and spontaneous generation. In this famous collection of observations on embryology and generation Harvey formulates “the first fundamentally new theory of generation since antiquity†by “shifting the focus to the egg itself as the primary generative agent.†The fruit of a lifetime of experience the treatise contradicts traditional Aristotelian views on generation by asserting that all life develops epigenetically either literally in an egg or according to the analogy of the egg. The development of professional organizations and journals devoted to adolescence as well as increasing appreciation in academia and the world of policy for the importance of this phase of life have helped this field catch up with the pace of research on other stages of human development particularly infancy and early childhood.<br /> <br /> The development of a comprehensive review of research on adolescence depends in large part on the perceived need for such a synthesis and the extent to which different research fields as well as policy and practice would benefit from such an effort. To address these issues the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine through the Board on Children Youth and Families held a two-day workshop in September 2005. The workshop was designed as an opportunity for an interdisciplinary group to explore the different strands of research that contribute to understanding adolescence. In the brief time available the group was not asked to address the entire range of issues related to adolescent health and development but rather to provide an initial explanation of issues that a longer term study might address.<br /> <br /> <em>A Study of Interactions</em> summarizes the major themes discussed at the workshop. It begins with an overview of what adolescence is and current views of the processes that shape development in the second decade of life. It explores the transdisciplinary research issues already presented in this field as well as issues raised in discussions of goals for the field's future.
