Joseph Warner (1717?1801) was chief surgeon at Guy's Hospital in London for more than forty years. He had the unique distinction of being a member of all three professional surgical organisations in London during the 18th century.‎

‎Second Edition, 12mo, viii,136pp., early ownership signature on front endpaper, text lightly browned, cont. calf, hinges cracked. First published in 1781 with a sixth and final edition appearing in 1807. John Elliot, M.D., was born at Chard, Somerset in 1747 and died in 1787 in Newgate prison by voluntary abstinence from all food, while awaiting trail on a charge of attempted murder but later acquitted. Elliot practised as an apothecary in Soho, first in Carnaby Market, and then as he prospered, in Great Marlborough Street, and later as a Physician in Newman Street.‎

"Scarpa explained with excellent precision the different characteristics between inguilan and fermoral hernias. The anatomical investigations resulted in the establishment of the very important principles relating to to the pathology as well as the modern surgical treatment of these hernias." - Monti/Loria, Antoniocarpa p.67-68. This important work was first published in Italian in Milan (1809). Scarpa gave the classic description of sliding hernia or hernia of the bowel. The French Edition is important because it contains considerable new material by Scarpa himself besides contributions by Laennec and others on the subject.
