‎Good, John Mason (1764-1827).‎

Fifth American Edition. American Imprints 29041. In 1793 Good moved to London and entered into partnership with a medical man, and was admitted a member of the College of Surgeons. His new partner was jealous of him, and soon caused the business to fail. While struggling to surmount his difficulties, Good in February 1795 won a prize of twenty guineas offered by Dr. Lettsom for an essay on the `Diseases Frequent in Workhouses, their Cure and Prevention' In 1794 he became an active member of the `General Pharmaceutic Association,' designed to improve the education of druggists, who were then notorious for their frequent illiteracy and mistakes. At the request of some members of this society Good wrote his `History of Medicine, so far as it relates to the Profession of the Apothecary,' 1795. He now gained considerable practice, and contributed to several leading periodicals, including the `Analytical' and the `Critical' Reviews, which he edited for some time. Much of his general literary work was done while he walked the streets on his rounds. In 1820 he devoted himself to practice exclusively as a physician. In 1822 he first published his `Study of Medicine' in four volumes, which was well received and sold rapidly. In it he endeavoured to unite physiology with pathology and therapeutics, an attempt which was bound to fail owing to the defective state of those sciences. His enormous labours at length told on his constitution, and for some years before his death his health was bad. No man could be more conscientious or industrious than Good. He had a striking power of acquiring knowledge and of arranging it in an orderly fashion. Remarkably, six American editions of this work had been published up to 1835. "No book published within the memory of man, in the English or any other language, has effected so great a revolution in the previously received opinions of society. The influence of that unpretending treatise has extended to hundreds of thousands of minds which know not whe nce they derived the new light that has broken in upon them, and percolated into thousands of circles that are scarcely conscious of knowing more about Mr. Combe than his name, and the fact that he wa s a phrenologist. the appearance of which created a sensation unparalleled by any philosophical work ever published in the language" - Illustrated London News, 1858. The book's fame did carry a word for phrenology with it; but Constitution is not a book about phrenology, instead it is a book of natural philosophy which teaches that Man is as subject to natural laws as the rest of Nature- Physical , Organic, and Moral. Ignorance of or disobedience to the natural laws led to 'punishment' - such as catching a cold from exposure to the elements. The first steps towards the good life were to study and obey the distinct natural laws (notably excluding the Bible). Combe's book was hugely controversial from the 1820s through the 1850s. Evangelicals founded societies to oppose it, wrote books and a rticles against it, and sometimes even burned it! The fuss popularly believed to have resulted from Darwin's Origin of Species pales in comparison to that of Combe's Constitution, one of the most infl uential books of the 19th century. The first group of advertisements are printed in blue ink, in a large variety of decorative display type, accompanied with a few interesting woodcut illustrations. 8vo. 225 mm. Juniata Library bookplate (withdrawn). Original printed boards binding, with an advertisement for Desilver on the rear board. Leather spine deteriorated; front board almost detached. Age stain to text. Printed on the front cover: 'Note to Borrowers. In consequence of the numerous applications at the store of the publisher to borrow the directory, and as he has been at great expense and trouble to compile it for the accommodation of the public, he has come to the determination of CHARGING SIX CENTS for every search. Purchasers are earnestly requested not to loan their books.' On the title page is the autograph ownership of: 'Francis Shoemaker, 51 S. Wharves.' He was a merchant with an extensive trade in Cuba, and the Caribbean, and is listed in the Directory. Text printed in two columns. It includes: the names of the citizens alphabetically arranged, with their occupations and places of abode; a list of the streets, alleys, lanes, courts, roads and wharves, banks, insurance companies; national and their societies, literary, scientific and charitable institutions; Custom House Department, Post Office, churches with their pastors and sextons, foreign, consular and other agents, resident abroad and in the United States, &c. There is also a chart of Regulations (for the ringing) of the State House Bell in Case of Fire. Many examples of this directory includes an Almanac, but here that is replaced by: The Will of the Late Stephen Girard, Esq Procured from the Office for the Probate of Wills, with a Short Biography of his Life. Philadelphia: Published by Thomas and Robert Desilver 1832. The controversy over the Will of Stephen Girard (1750-1831) was of great interest in this era. His large estate was divided - with $140,000 given to relatives and charities; $300,000 to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania "for internal improvement by canal navigation"; his real estate in Louisiana (208,000 acres) he left to New Orleans; $500,000 he left to Philadelphia to create Delaware Avenue, clean up the waterfront, pave, remove all wooden buildings and other projects to improve the city. The bulk of his estate was left to create what became Girard College, to educate the poor white orphan boys with a trade. His will gives instructions about the College, both physical and administrative. Some of Girard's heirs contested the will in what became a "classic in American legal history, contributing not a little to the clarification of the law of charities" (DAB). Issued around the 50th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, this unusual and scarce guide to the social life and customs of Philadelphia (then the second most populous city in the U.S.) covers a wide territory with a keen eye. Lawyers, doctors, professors, popular fashions, social leaders and climbers, Utopians, etc. are examined. The Wistar Parties are named for Caspar Wistar (1761-1818) a famous physician and anatomist. It was his habit to throw open his house once every week in the winter, and at these gatherings students, citizens, scientists, and travelers met and discussed subjects of interest. These assemblies, celebrated in the annals of Philadelphia under the title of Wistar parties (or balls), were continued long after his death by other residents of that city.
