France Undated though certainly late 18th century latin precis discussing menstration and microbes. Signed 'Delaplanche'. Biographical Notes: SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS 1792-1872. Born in 1792 Sir Thomas Phillipps from childhood was obsessed with the idea of obtaining virtually anything written or printed on paper including cartloads of documents from wastepaper merchants and the entire inventories of booksellers. "I wish to have one copy of every book in the world" he declared to a friend. He very nearly succeeded. His collection ultimately grew to more than 100000 books and at least 60000 manuscripts. As a result of his extravagant purchases Sir Thomas was permanently on the verge of bankruptcy and was constantly pursued by creditors. So many books arrived at his house that it was impossible to unpack his acquisitions much less keep pace with them. Visiting scholars driven to distraction would spend days hunting for an elusive text in the dusty heaps that filled every room. Because Sir Thomas has a morbid dread of fire most of his collection was housed in coffinlike boxes that could be carted away quickly. Visitors to Middle Hill were struck too by the presence of numerous logs a ploy he used to lure beetles away from his books. As Sir Thomas relentlessly pursued his passion the house itself began to crumble and its floors started to sag under the cast weight of hundreds of tons of paper. His neglect of Middle Hill was partly deliberate however. Sir Thomas's chief enemy in life James Halliwell had married his daughter against his wishes. It appears that Halliwell was in Sir Thomas' eyes the worst kind of criminal a book thief who had stolen valuable works from university libraries and even from his father-in-law. Having no sons Sir Thomas was unable to prevent Halliwell from inheriting his estate. To ensure that his detested heir would never receive anything of value Sir Thomas's solution was to allow Middle Hill to fall unto complete disrepair. He even went so far as to chop down and sell for lumber the centuries-old oak trees that lined the majestic mile-long drive to his home. In 1863 Sir Thomas decided to move - in order to accommodate his books. With the aid of 160 men 103 wagonloads of books and papers drawn by 230 horses the books were lumbered from Middle Hill top their new estate in nearby Cheltenham. It is said that for years afterwards the countryside was littered with the remains of carts that had collapsed under the sheer weight of the Phillipps collection. Sir Thomas continues to add to his library until his death in 1872. After Sir Thomas's death his immediate family had no room for his collection. So vast was the library that although individual items and large sections were sold privately or through numerous auction sales the Phillipps collection is still being sold more than a century after the death of its owner. In the course of its sales many treasures have come to light. As late as 1964 part of the long-lost and unique medieval manuscript of the Roman poet Ovid's Metamorphoses appeared and was subsequently reunited with its other half at Magdalen College Oxford. Once destined for destruction as worthless wastepaper this and many other priceless works were saved by the single-minded obsession of the greatest bibliomaniac of all time. Autograph. Manuscript. Contemporary vellum rebacked some browning throughout marginal worming lightly worn. Contemporary ownership inscription by doctor above pictorial wood-engraved ex-libris by Leo Wyatt for Lord Norwich on front endpaper in all volumes. Two contemporary Latin manuscripts laid in after p. 408 one two pages signed by joannes cont on hypochondriacs the other concerning a cure. <br/><br/>Sennerts complete works three volumes in six parts printed by Huguetan. Sennert was an influential German professor notable for his contributions to medicine and atomic theory. Daniel Sennert born in Breslau was a student and the professor of medicine at the University of Wittenberg the intellectual center of Lutheranism. He was a renowned physician and an extremely prolific and influential writer whose popularity in his time is clear from the many editions of his works many of which were translated into English. These are Sennerts complete works in six parts each with a separate dated title page printed in red and black. His Opera was first published in Paris in 1641 and this edition expanded . with the omission of Tabulae institutionum and the addition of Vita Danielis Sennerti Judicia virorum clarissimorum Methodus discendi medicinam De curatione infantium De arthritide Tragopodagra Luciani in Greek and Latin Exoterica Epitome librorum de febribus Epistolarum medicinalium una cum responsorii D. Michaelis Doringei centuriae duae. The Epitome is reprinted from the Epitome edited by Claude Bonnet-- Krivatsy. This edition is regarded as the best. Among Sennerts many achievements he was the first to introduce chemistry as a subject of the medical curriculum and to make a serious effort to harmonize the Galenic doctrines of medicine with those of Paracelsus. Besides giving early accounts of scarlatina and rubella Sennert added to the knowledge of scurvy dysentery and alcoholism. He was an able clinician but a believer in witchcraft.-- Garrison-Morton 61. Scarcely found on the market these volumes are a complete set of Sennerts studies and 17th century medicine. Sennert was known to apply astrology to medicine and the supernatural origins of disease. Rare in any condition one OCLC library holding. "The following sketches were written for the purpose of presenting some outlines of the personal and mental characteristics of the Medical Professors of Philadelphia for the special gratification of the Students who listen to their instructions. The author can only add that the work has been performed not only without malice in any instance but with an absolute feeling of impartiality and an earnest desire to be just." Sameul Jackson M.D.: ".If you have ever seen Audubon or the portraits of Audubon the Naturalist you will have an idea of the personal appearance of Professor Jackson." George B. Wood M.D.: ".Dr. Wood is exceedingly polite and deferential to his class and labors successfully for their instruction. He prepares his lectures with much care and is remarkably luminous and perspicuous in his statements and demonstrations. He often discusses a dry question of Physiology or Practice with as much spirit as one would exhibit in replying to a personal attack. No branch of Medical study requires so much patient labor as that of Practice in its common limits. But Dr. Wood embraces in his discussions a wide range of investigation in pathological and morbid Anatomy illustrated by new and perfect models drawings and preparations imported from France for this purpose. The annual lectures of the University being now extended to six months instead of four which is the customary period in other colleges gives an opportunity for the introduction of such topics and greatly increase the labor of the Professors." Hugh L. Hodge M.D.: " 'Hung be the heavens with black.' Such is the irreverent exclamation which rises to the mind as we commence our sketch of the eminent but solemn gentleman who occupies the chair of Obstetrics in the University. Dr. Hodge is one of the most perfect specimens of the good old-fashioned serious 'Apothecary Doctor' of a past age that we have ever seen. If any man ever looked like a Doctor it is Professor Hodge. His whole aspect is suggestive of drugs --- nauseating drugs --- calomel and jalap tartar emetic blue pill gum guaic and ammonia. He looks as if he had just been tasting of some offensive drug or was meditating the administration of some disagreeable compound of drugs or had just sealed the fate of some poor victim of drugs. He appears unmoved by any of the common emotions of humanity; cold rigid dogmatic passionless. No man is certainly to blame for lack of personal beauty. No man should be blamed or ridiculed on account of personal deformities. A cold rigid passionless nature may be more a misfortune than a fault. But it does not follow that men so unfortunately constituted should be maintained in conspicuous and important positions where their defects of person and manner are a constant affliction to hundreds of their fellow beings. Dr. Hodge may be the most genial and amiable person in the world for aught we know for we have never seen him except in the Anatomical theatre but there his influence is most depressing and injurious. He takes the life out of everything he touches as carbonic acid gas robs the atmosphere of its vital properties and throws the brain into a state of coma or vertigo." Joseph Carson M.D.: ".We are rather pleased with the easy pleasant unpretentious manners of Dr. Carson but we cannot speak so favorable of the style of speaking which he has adopted or rather fallen into for we do not suppose his style of delivery has ever occupied much of his attention. His voice is not strong and he makes an effort to give it more force by speaking in a high strained tone which is not at all pleasant to the ear. We are almost painfully impressed with sympathy for such a speaker being constantly apprehensive that he will lacerate his larynx or fall a victimtochronic. F. Soft cover. Page 70 has a woodcut of this deived while facing p. 74 is a full-page acupuncture-like engraving showing where to use the device on the body. The Deutsche edition features an elaborate printed sticker on the title-page promoting the services of a Baunscheidt practitioner John Linden at Cleveland Ohio.
