He was stationed in 1820-1821 at St. Helena as secretary to Admiral Lambert on H.M.S. Vigo. Vidal was a distinguished painter and many of his fine drawings like those of his brother Alexander were adapted for the engraved vignettes on early issues of certain British Admiralty charts.<br/><br/>Abbey describes only a red cloth binding on his large paper copy. The second dated November 14 1921 inquires about royalties Damrosch sent to Camille Saint-Saëns and Ralph Vaughan Williams; the writer wants to adjust Damrosch's French bank account; bank receipt Morgan Harjes & Co Paris dated July 8 1921 is attached. Unrecorded and presumably unpublished. The texts are by Henry Rutherford Elliot 1849-1906 a journalist in New York and Edwin Markham 1852-1940 an American poet. "Laugh it off!" is a humorous song in a popular style; The Manger Song of Mary is a lullaby in a more sophisticated style.<br/><br/>The correspondence suggests that both of Vidal's songs were slated for publication by Hinds Hayden & Eldredge in 1923; the scribal copies were most likely intended as engraver's copies. One of the poets Elliot however was no longer alive; there are no materials in the present collection mentioning his heirs. In any case the SACEM forms also Markham's remained unsigned. The publication stalled and the songs were apparently never published.<br/><br/>A French conductor teacher and composer " Vidal is particularly remembered as a fine teacher who was sympathetic to new ideas. At the Paris Conservatoire he taught classes in solfège from 1894 piano accompaniment from 1896 and composition from 1909. Vidal's most successful compositions were the ballet La maladetta 1893 which had been performed nearly 200 times by 1930 and the light opera Eros." Antique-style blue morocco boards tooled in gilt and blind spine gilt with raised bands a.e.g. Minor staining in lower margin and tape repair to verso of one folding plate. Occasional marginal thumbsoiling minor offsetting but on the whole quite clean internally. A very good copy handsomely bound. A superbly illustrated work about the people and places of Buenos Aires and Monte Video with striking colored aquatints by the prominent engraver and publisher R. Ackermann making this one of the premier South American view books. Some of the scenes people and places depicted are: "Monte Video" "Church of San Domingo" "Beggar on Horseback" "Pampa Indians" "General View of Buenos Ayres from the Plaza de Toros" "Balling Ostriches" "Guachos sic Rustics of Tucuman" and "A Horse Race." Also depicted are representative inhabitants of the Pampas and Rio de La Plata regions and picturesque views of outdoor markets and plazas. Originally issued in six monthly parts the work was then offered in book format apparently bound first in boards and in a later issue bound in half leather. Abbey follows Tooley in suggesting that there were apparently four issues all with the same title and plates and all with the same 1820 watermarks but he provides no satisfactory manner of differentiating the editions; and consequently aside from the original issue in six separate parts there is no means of establishing issue priority. At the time of publication Ackermann announced the production of 750 regular paper copies and fifty large-paper copies. <br> <br> "In 1820 began a series of books dealing with travel and scenery. In its present state the script would translate into a two-hour television film. <br /><br /><i>offered with: </i><br /><br />Vintage original Final Draft script by Gore Vidal adapted from the novel by Lucian Truscott USA. Burbank CA: Warner Bros. Television 25 September - 4 October 1985. 22261 plus lettered inserts quarto printed on blue and salmon stock the latter dated revises brad bound in studio wrappers. A call sheet for the 17th day of shooting is laid in. A few smudges to wrappers else NEAR FINE. <br /><br />Final draft script expanded and in 1986 aired as a two part made-for-television production. Truscott's novel set at West Point at the time of the Vietnam War reportedly based it on fact. The completed film when screened on television dealt with homophobia both external and internalized and it was very strong stuff in the mid-1980s at the height of the Reagan era. The film was clearly troubling to some contemporary critics but it nonetheless was nominated for three Emmy Awards. <br /><br />This pair of scripts which are very different from each other are a very interesting example of Vidal's work as a screenwriter especially because of the film's LGBTQ subject matter.
