br. Il cervello di una scimmia bipede di due milioni di anni fa aveva lobi frontali simili ai nostri, suggerendo che essa stava già sviluppando abilità cognitive di tipo umano. Una nuova specie scoperta in Indonesia, sopravvissuta fino a dodicimila anni fa, aveva meno di un metro di statura e il cervello più piccolo dell'australopiteca africana "Lucy", ma sapeva costruire strumenti in pietra. Il DNA estratto dalla falange di una mano scoperta in Siberia, antica di quarantamila anni, indica l'esistenza di un'altra specie umana, diversa sia da noi che dai Neanderthal.
