Stuzzicato nel suo formidabile fiuto per le grandi storie, Westerman si immerge in un'indagine che lo porta dalle sponde della Mosa alle isole dell'Indonesia, sulle tracce dei nostri antenati. Presto, però, la questione delle origini si rivela elusiva, troppo disputata tra grandi paleontologi e scuole di pensiero, con i dibattiti scientifici spesso viziati da rivalità personali, prestigio internazionale e rancori postcoloniali. E la domanda su chi fosse l'uomo di Flores lascia spazio a interrogativi più disturbanti e urgenti: cosa ci rende geneticamente umani?
