Giorgio? über ??Giudecca?, ?Dogana?, ?Giardini?, ?Reali?, ?Zecca?, ?Piazzetta?, ?Palazzo Ducale? u. ?Prigioni? bis ?Riva degli Schiavoni? (so die Bezeichnungen unterhalb der Darstellung); im Vordergrund zahlreiche Schiffe (Segelschiffe, Gondeln, ein Raddampfer usw.). - ?[...] questa veduta riscosse un notevolissimo consenso per il suo valore decorativo, invece non altrettanto valido è il suo apporto di documento grafico per la mediocre cura dei particolari? (Cassini, ?Piante e vedute prospettiche di Venezia (1479-1855)?). - Gezeichnet bzw. gedruckt wurde das seltene Panorama offenbar für die Teilnehmer ?del nono Congresso degli Scienziati Italiani in Venezia? am 11. September 1847. Beiliegend die auf rosa Papier lithographierte, handschriftl. ausgefüllte, gestempelte u. numerierte Teilnehmerkarte (10 x 14,5 cm) für den Chemiker und Kaufmann Karl August Neumann (1771-1866) mit den eigenh. Unterschriften von drei Mitgliedern der Gesellschaft. Die Rückseite der Einladungskarte mit einem lithogr. Stadtplan von Venedig. Die Nummer ?497? findet sich sowohl auf der Teilnehmerkarte als auch auf der erhaltenen bedruckten OPp.-Rolle (diese mit dem Titelaufdruck ?Panorama di Venezia? sowie ebenfalls mit der Jahreszahl ?1847?). - Rolle etw. bestoßen bzw. fleckig. ‎[Karlsruhe, Braun, ca. 1892]. 4to. 12 collotype photographic plates. Housed in a folding cloth and card case with pictorial cover in cream and black, titled in orange.‎

‎A heretofore undocumented publication of twelve photographs of Egypt by the future Queen Victoria of Sweden herself, otherwise only published for private circulation in Victoria's book on the subject: "Vom Nil. Tagebuchblätter während des Aufenthalts in Egypten im Winter 1890/91". - The pictorial cover of the case housing these plates is very similar to the design of the only edition of the book (itself quite uncommon), and the plates may easily be identified as those from the queen's collection, as both the photographs themselves and the variant spellings of their captions perfectly match those published there. - Though numerous professional photos were taken on the royal trip, Victoria was a passionate and skilled amateur photographer, and chose her own photographs to complement her writing when she published "Vom Nil" for family and friends. Examples of her photography can be found throughout the book, but in this unrecorded publication these photographs have been presented as the entire focus, above all else. Plates include "Beduinen-Mädchen", "Cameel mit Zuckerrohr", a group of locals flying a flag "Bei Kalabsche", "Blick auf den Cataract", and many more. - Born a princess of Baden, Victoria's marriage to Gustaf V of Sweden was purely political, and designed to strengthen ties between German and Swedish courts. It was not a particularly happy match, and the visit to Egypt was intended to strengthen a marriage that had effectively broken down, as well as to allow Victoria to recover from the difficult birth of her third son. While the reunification was unsuccessful, Victoria began a lifelong interest in Egyptian antiquities; her large personal collection was later donated to the University of Uppsala, where it can still be found today. - Not listed in Kainbacher and with no copies of this set of prints on OCLC nor any record at auction of the same. - Minor wear to folding case. A few hints of edgewear to plates; quite well preserved. - Cf. Kainbacher (4th ed.) 489.‎

‎Beautifully produced suite of views engraved after the Dutch artist Jan Simon Voddiggel (1820-62) showing Wiesbaden in Hesse, one of the oldest spa towns in Europe, celebrated as the "Nice of the North". Includes several views of the old Kurhaus ("spa house") built by Christian Zais in 1810 in the neoclassical style, the nearby cold-water balneological institution of Nerothal, the summer palace of the Dukes of Nassau, the "Kochbrunnen" (hot spring fountain) in downtown Wiesbaden, the sepulchral chapel of Duchess Elizabeth of Nassau, the Ducal hunting palace, and the ruins of Sonnenberg castle. Issued with various titles, as well as without a title-page (as here). - One plate with an unobtrusive mark, another with faint stains at corners from adhesive on rear. Cloth rubbed, spine rebacked with new endpapers. - Provenance: Inscribed in ink on front free endpaper to Christine Emma Sanford, née Percival (1828-1900), "from her affectionate Mother" (dated 1 May 1859). Christine Percival had married Edward Ayshford Sanford of Combe Florey, Somerset, in 1853. A charming set.‎

‎Extremely rare first edition (with an appendix printed in 1857, so perhaps reissued at that time) of a pilot guide for parts of the Caribbean, stating explicitly that there is still no adequate information for all parts. Although it calls itself volume 1, it is not clear that any of the various publications under the title "The West India Directory" was intended as a companion volume to the present one. It clearly covers different content than "The West India Directory" published by John William Norie in 1827. - With library stamps of the Marinens Bibliothek, Copenhagen (the library of the Danish Royal Navy): in gold in the centre of the front board and in ink on the title-page. Head of spine cracked, front hinge weak, corners bumped, front endpapers loose, but still in good condition. - OCLC 47915720.‎

Illustrated with 30 additional engraved fold-out maps. Volumes uniformly bound in contemporary full polished calf gilt titles stamped in black morocco lettering pieces on the spine with gilt rules decorations and volume numbers. Previous owner ink signature "D. B. McNab" on each front free endpaper and ink manuscript index to plates tipped in. T. Kitchin engraving of armillary sphere mounted to front pastedown of vol. 1 and 1841 data table of Scotland's railways and canals to Vol. 2 FFEP. Corners bumped spines with crackling light scuffs and scars to covers leaf edges toned and light foxing throughout top edges soiled all maps intact albeit some with small chips and creases bindings tight. "A compilation where those who read the Newspapers might at once find some account of any particular town or fortress." The casual armchair traveler is also well-served with vivid descriptions. This revision of the 1807 edition has better maps. The Chronological Table leaves off in November 1809 with events of the Napoleonic Wars. <p>Sample of a brief entry: "Oregan or River of the West a river of North America which falls into the ocean in lon. 122.30.W and lat. 43.17.30.N."
