Fra i tanti musici castrati che fra Seicento e Settecento contribuirono al successo dell'opera sulle scene teatrali e nelle corti europee, Filippo Balatri (1682-1756) fu l'unico a lasciare delle memorie: un suo componimento in versi, Frutti del mondo (1735), è parzialmente noto grazie all'edizione del 1924 curata da K. Vossler, e da sempre ha attirato l'interesse degli studiosi di musica. In precedenza, però, fra il 1725 e il 1732 il cantante aveva scritto in forma di romanzo un'altra opera, Vita e viaggi, che viene pubblicata qui per la prima volta. Quasi metà delle memorie di Balatri riguarda i due anni (1699-1701) da lui trascorsi in Moscovia ed è ricca di osservazioni che interessano gli storici della Russia e delle riforme di Pietro il Grande; ma altrettanto curiose e ricche di interesse sono le descrizioni di altri viaggi, dall'Inghilterra, alle Fiandre e alla Baviera.
