He found the ancient city of Alexandria in the Caucasus (modern Begram) dating to Alexander the Great. He unlocked the now-extinct language known as Kharoshthi. At the time of the 1838 First Anglo-Afghan War, Masson had spent more time in Afghanistan then any other British subject. He was a minority voice critical of the invasion and accurately predicted it would be a disaster for the Empire. The first book-length biography was published in 2021, Alexandria: The Quest for the Lost City, by Edmund Richardson. In 1827, while stationed at Agra, he and a colleague deserted and traveled through parts of the Punjab that were under British control at that time. At Ahmadpur, they were rescued by Josiah Harlan and commissioned as mounted orderlies in his expedition to overthrow the regime in Kabul, Afghanistan. Not long afterward, near Dera Ghazi Khan, he deserted Harlan The Title 'Narrative of various journeys in Balochistan, Afghanistan, and the Panjab: Including a residence in those countries from 1826 to 1838 written/authored/edited by Charles Masson', published in the year 2022. As explained by Sabin, "there are the same variations on the imprint in this as in the quarto edition", with several different imprints. As indicated in Sabin, our 6th volume is entitled, “Journal d’un Voyage.” The plates to Didot’s edition were usually bound up in a separate volume, but in our copy we can find three fine folding maps, by Nicolas Bellin : "Carte des Embouchures du Mississipi", "Partie de la Coste de la Louisiane et de la Floride depuis e Mississipi jusqu'aà St Marc d'Apalache" and "Plan de la Baye de Pansacola". Historien et voyageur le père jésuite Pierre de Charlevoix (1682-1761) entreprend un important second voyage en Amérique du Nord de 1720 à 1722 : De Québec, il rejoindra le lac Michigan, puis rejoindra les sources du Theakiki, rejoint le Mississipi qu'il descend jusqu'à son embouchure, visite le pays des Illinois, s'embarque pour Saint Domingue, doit revenir au Mississipi par la Floride après un naufrage, puis réussit enfin à rejoindre Saint-Domingue.
