Include il frontespizio inciso da Wolfgang Kilian, con i ritratti in piedi dei due autori ai lati di una riproduzione della mappa della Cina, e la pianta, ripiegata, del palazzo pechinese convertito a chiesa, con la tomba di Ricci. Presente anche l’ultima carta bianca, qui con appunti e un piccolo indice analitico, manoscritti. Prima edizione di uno dei primi resoconti di un occidentale sulla Cina, il libro di Ricci ebbe un impatto culturale enorme sul mondo europeo del XVII secolo, e fu abbondantemente ristampato e tradotto fin dall’anno successivo. Matteo Ricci, missionario in Cina fino all’anno della sua morte, nel 1610, lasciò un importante manoscritto che sarebbe stato redatto e pubblicato da Trigault, anche lui membro della spedizione. Frontespizio restaurato nella parte bassa. The first edition of the earliest modern description of China, made by an Occidental traveller: Ricci’s book had a big impact all over the Century and it was republished and translated many times since a year later his publication. Matteo Ricci, a jesuit missionary to China until his death, in 1610, left an important manuscript edited and published by Trigault, another member of the expedition. Title restored in his lower part.

La spedizione antartica britannica salpò da Cardiff il 15 giugno 1910, sotto il comando del Capitano Robert Falcon Scott, il cui scopo era quello di diventare il primo ad arrivare al polo sud. Scott e il suo equipaggio di quattro uomini arrivò al polo sud il 17 gennaio 1912, solo per scoprire che il norvegese Roald Amundsen vi era già arrivato quasi un mese prima. I cinque uomini della spedizione perirono durante il ritorno al campo base, e i loro corpi furono ritrovati il 12 novembre 1912, assieme alle lettere e i diari che fornirono dettagli sulla loro spedizione e su cui questi volumi sono basati. Two volumes in original blue combed cloth, first edition, photogravures and numerous photographic plates, folding map present to the rear of both volumes. The British Antarctic Expedition set sail from Cardiff on 15 June 1910, under the command of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, with the aim of being the first to reach the South Pole. Scott and his party of four men reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that a Norwegian team, led by Roald Amundsen had arrived there almost a month earlier. Five men in the British party died on their journey back to the base camp. Their bodies were discovered on 12 November 1912, along with letters and diaries which provided details of their journey and upon which these volumes are based

Uno dei rari esemplari comprendenti le 7 carte supplementari nel secondo volume (437*-450*) intitolate Scoperte degli Olandesi nell’Australasia. Si tratta di uno delle più importanti opere consacrate alle prime spedizioni nel Pacifico del Sud. “Il suo studio fa epoca nella conoscenza dell’Oceania(...). De Brosses, raccogliendo tutti i testi conosciuti dai viaggiatori, chiama a raccolta tutti gli studiosi e aiutò a creare un clima favorevole alle esplorazioni scientifiche e alle installazioni coloniali” (O’Reilly 93). Si tratta di una raccolta di narrazioni della maggioranza dei più famosi viaggiatori nei Mari del Sud, cominciando dal secondo viaggio di Vespucci nel 1502 fino ai viaggi di Magellano, Drake, Schouten, Tasman, etc. (Pézennes, France). “Questa è un’opera estremamente importante e completa sui viaggi, e un’opera eccezionale sulla preistoria dell’Australasia (Hill, p.35).
