Pp. vi 293 8 full page color plates from painting by Juzo Kobayashi 1 large folding map 1 table. Later red morocco with five gilt-decorated raised bands with gilt-lettering in two panels and blind-stamped birds in four other panels over rose-colored silt cloth top page edge gilt folio 15.25 x 10.75 inches. This monograph is based primarily on 14 months of fieldwork from 1921-1922 in the Riu Kiu islands also known as the Loo Cho islands that stretch between the Japanese island chain and Formosa now Taiwan. Zoogeographically the islands span the Palaearctic region Japan and the Oriental region Taiwan; Kuroda thought this was one of the most interesting ornithological regions of the world from a zoogeographic point of view. The monograph describes 281 species and subspecies based on 1621 skins collected in 1921-22 and reviews all other specimens in museums in around the world. Francis Willughby sometimes spelt Willoughby 1635 �1672 was an English ornithologist and ichthyologist and an early student of linguistics and games. He was born and raised at Middleton Hall Warwickshire the only son of an affluent country family. He was a student at Trinity College Cambridge where he was tutored by the mathematician and naturalist John Ray who became a lifetime friend and colleague and lived with Willughby after 1662 when he lost his livelihood through his refusal to sign the Act of Uniformity. Willughby was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1661 then aged 27. He died of pleurisy in July 1672 aged 36. Willughby Society unknown

Original watercolour of a male and female White-flanked Sunbird Aethopyga eximia and a male Splendid Sunbird Cinnyris coccinigastrus by the prolific zoological artist Jean Gabriel Prêtre produced for Temminck's Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées d'oiseaux. Paris 1820-1839. On the final published plate 376 the Splendid Sunbird was changed with a Purple-throated Sunbird and the Splendid Sunbird appeared on plate 388. Sunbirds make up a family of very small passerine birds. The White-flanked Sunbird is found in Indonesia and the Splendid Sunbird in West and central Africa. Temminck's lavishly illustrated Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées d'oiseaux. issued in 102 parts between 1820-1839 was published as a kind of continuation to Buffon's Histoire naturelle des oiseaux 1770-1786. Great bustard Otis tarda.Northwest Germany ca. 1710/20. Watercolour drawing on 2½ sheets of Imperial laid paper 129 x 57 cm as assembled.
A life-size watercolour drawing of a Great bustard Otis tarda cock hanging from a hook by a cord threaded through its nostrils presumably awaiting the cook's assistants who would have plucked it. The skilful artist remains unidentified. The drawing itself from the hook which bleeds off the paper at the head to the tips of the claws measures 126 cm and the bustard itself measures 110 cm from the tip of its beak to the tip of its tail. Its plumage is predominantly light brown with black stripes on the back and with the breast and the lower parts of the wings white. The hens were much smaller than the cocks which are the heaviest flying birds in the world and the heaviest indigenous birds of any kind in Europe today. The drawing probably comes from the estate the kitchen of a nobleman. The great bustard has become rare in northern Europe with only a few hundred largely confined to small parts of East Germany and western Poland but there is still a larger population spread throughout Hungary. It is classified as vulnerable worldwide. In the early 18th century it had a much greater range including much of Germany and England. In 1797 Thomas Bewick noted that it made "excellent eating . as excellent a repast as our own domestic poultry or even as the American turkey". He therefore lamented that it had not been domesticated and foresaw that hunting might lead to its "total extinction" in England.Formerly folded. With a small worm hole in the neck of the turkey and a slightly larger one in the blank paper next to the neck and an occasional minor tear on the old folds some professionally reinforced on the back but otherwise in very good condition. With the birds numbered in pencil and the plate number and bird names in pencil in the lower left corner.
Original watercolour of a Long-billed Starthroat Heliomaster longirostris a Tufted Coquette Lophornis ornatus and a Hyacinth Visorbearer Augastes scutatus by the prolific zoological artist Jean Gabriel Prêtre produced for Temminck's Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées d'oiseaux. Paris 1820-1839. All three are species of hummingbirds found in South America and the Long-billed Starthroat also in Central America.Temminck's lavishly illustrated Nouveau recueil de planches coloriées d'oiseaux. issued in 102 parts between 1820-1839 was published as a kind of continuation to Buffon's Histoire naturelle des oiseaux 1770-1786.
