Roche, Arthur Somers (1883-1935). American author of mystery thrillers
A SLIP OF PAPER INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY MYSTERY THRILLER WRITER ARTHUR SOMERS ROCHE.
August 14 1921. 1921. Good. - A slip of paper 2 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide & mounted on a slightly larger piece of stiff paper is inscribed & signed in black ink: "Aug. 14 1921 / Here you are! / Arthur Somers Roche." The right half of the paper & mount are darkened. A pencil notation appears on the verso of the mount with 2 small remnants of tape where the autograph was removed from an album. Good. <p>Two years after graduating with a law degree from Boston College Arthur Somers Roche 1883-1935 grew tired of the legal profession and in 1906 took up journalism with a job at the New York World. By 1910 he was contributing stories to national magazines and his first novel 'Loot" was published in 1916. Roche's writing career was interrupted during World War I while he served as a captain with the U. S. Army Military Intelligence Division. Subsequently he became one of the more prolific authors of the postwar period. Before his untimely death from heart disease at the age of 51 he wrote twenty-three novels and scores of short stories often using his adopted home state of Florida as a backdrop for his mystery thrillers. Many of his stories and novels were the basis of silent films. August 14, 1921. unknown

Roche, Arthur Somers, and Ethel Pettit Roche
Callingham's Girl
New York: Dodd Mead and Company. Good. 1937. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket moderately worn copy half of ffep torn away light dampstain on rear cover spine turned front jacket text glued to front pastedown. Scarce crime novel in which a detective and an orchestra leader team up to solve the murder of a notorious gamber/gangster. "A vivid picture of New York after dark. Gangsters chorus girls and society looking for a thrill move through these pages adding color and character to a story that races along on a high note of exciting suspense." Touted on the jacket blurb as the author's "latest novel" omitting to mention that he had actually been dead for a couple of years since February 1935. This didn't seem to put much of a crimp in his output however this being the fifth of six novels to appear posthumously -- and the only one to bear his wife's name as co-author which would seem to imply that the others had already been finished at the time of his demise. . New York: A. L. Burt 1929. Light but "heart-palpitating" romance of a New York millionaire whose fiancée throws him over for a richer man; encountering an impoverished 'girl' in a park he rescues her and proposes partly out of spite; she accepts out of desperation; over the course of the book they do manage to fall in love. To him through the mail comes a letter from the gold-digger district of New York saying that the writer is a young woman who will if he advances to her $25000.00 guarantee to marry a millionaire and become an established member of society within two years. He tears up the letter with a weary smile but the nerve of the girl intrigues him and almost against his will he calls upon her at her one room apartment in a west side hotel. She proves to be a decent and respectable young woman apparently well born with great beauty and charm but she is so clear so definite so cold-blooded in her plan that it appeals to his sporting instinct to treat the matter like a bet on a race course. He turns over the money to her with the distinct understanding that she is in now way to give him any quid pro quo - and then you are started on a most amusing story the outcome of which is too good to tell. Suffice it to say that the girl makes good in the two years by methods open to anyone without either any great stroke of luck or any improbable action. And the quid pro quo - well - !
