Acceptable. 646 p. clean and unmarked except for name of former owner on front end paper; paper age-toned but strong; very fine engravings by F.O.C. Darley; frontis. has tissue guard; green boards with carved bird and floral ornamentation slightly rubbed and bumped; clear gilt writing; badly damaged spine. Rebinding with the same boards would make this a beautiful book. It is a 19th c. reprint of a late 18th c. best-seller mentioned in Jane Austen's Emma and the type of romance satirized in Northanger Abbey. It's actually an entertaining if preposterous yarn with an over-the-top villain who has cheated a brother and sister of their inheritance lovers who are repeatedly separated perpetual peril characters with names like "Lord Mortimer" and "Lady Euphrasia." This is a Very Good Plus copy of the First Thus Edition by Routledge reasonably scarce and with no institutional holdings. 585 pages still bright and supple some foxing throughout. In an attractive Victorian decorative binding: red cloth with embossed designs in black and gilt. Contemporary ownership signature on FFEP and a Christmas gift sticker on the front paste-down.
