‎Composition sur Arches avec fragments de presse en papier glacé et extraits de journaux sur fonds peints à l’huile. Signée et datée1979 en bas à droite (50/65 cm).‎

‎Inventeur du concept de « peinture-journal » au début des années 60 et fondateur d’un « journal à peindre » en 1970, aujourd’hui considéré comme le premier grand passeur de la contre-culture en France, Henri-Jean Enu (Méru, Oise, 1944) s’est également essayé à la composition musicale avec la création d’un groupe de pop expérimentale : Fille qui mousse. Au début des années 60, il fréquente un café de la place des Vosges (La Bourgogne) où il prend l’habitude de retrouver quelques amis. Il découvre les publications de Lawrence Ferlinghetti à leur parution (Corso, Ginsberg, etc.) et rencontre sa première femme sur les quais de la Seine, assistant par hasard à la déclamation solitaire d’un poète d’un genre un peu discrépant et supertemporel : Isidore Isou. Avec Félix Guattari, il signe l’appel Un milliard pour le Vietnam (qui paraît en 1967 dans le numéro 5 de la revue Recherches), et, inspiré par ses lectures théoriques et littéraires, se lance dans la publication de la revue Parapluie en 1970. Dans la lignée des journaux anglais, hollandais et américains Oz, Ink, The Other, International Times ou Other scenes, la rédaction témoigne de l’effervescence artistique, musicale et sociale de l’époque dans une présentation baroque, mêlant illustrations aux tons aléatoires ou solarisés, strips et mises en pages typographiques et manuscrites. Les premiers numéros sont tirés sur les presses de Claude Palmer (imprimerie Le Souterrain). Ils sont distribués par quelques équipes à la sortie des concerts et à la librairie Actualités de Pierre Scias (qui écrit dans la revue sous le pseudonyme de Ronald Sonducor et joue un rôle important dans son lancement). En Angleterre, Henri-Jean Enu rencontre Claude Pélieu et Mary Beach, ainsi que Ralph Rumney, fondateur et membre unique du Comité psychogéographique de Londres, dissout par l’Internationale situationniste. D’autres collaborations suivent : Gil J. Wolman, Jean-Louis Brau et sa femme Éliane Papaï, Pierre Loizeau, Marc Zermati (sous le pseudonyme de Dr Muzac), Gérard Terronèse, Sabine Wolf, Gilles Février, Xavier Domingo, Théo Le Soualc’h, Hart Leroy Bibbs, Denis Gheerbrandt, Gilles Yéprémian, Michel Giroud, Yves Adrien, Angeline Neveu, les dessinateurs Pierre Legendre et Nicolas Devil, les photographes Horace et Dominique Tarlé… Le tirage passe de 5 000 à 35 000 ex., fabriqués en rotative à Aubervilliers. Treize numéros paraissent en trois ans. La publication s’interrompt suite au choc pétrolier de 1973. Henri-Jean Enu poursuit ses recherches dans le domaine de la peinture. A la galerie Germain (Paris), plusieurs expositions se succèdent entre 1970 et 1980, dont L’Oreille de Van Gogh avec la participation d’Arman, Gina Pane, Jean Tinguely, Gil J. Wolman... Autour de Pierre Restany, les contours d’un premier collectif sont tracés en 1977 (Art+), avec Bernard Quentin, Piotr Kowalski, Jean Messagier, Robert Malaval et Jean-Pierre Raynaud. La naissance d’une Internationale Surmoderniste confirme cette direction, inspirée par une nouvelle réflexion anthropologique. « Nous souhaitions libérer l’expression artistique du grand académisme de l’ère moderne, dont certains standards, notamment cubistes, nous semblaient à l’époque empruntés ou subtilisés aux arts premiers. Cette fausse modernité appelait la nécessité d’une surmodernité. Ce fut aussi une sorte de caricature contre culturelle, pastiche des courants et de leur palette commune, de l’unanimisme des formes et des couleurs. Un projet disparate, dans lequel le plagiat et l’acculturation volontaire de certains de nos membres pouvaient aussi se dépasser. » En 1982, une vaste enquête sur l’antisémitisme de l’extrême gauche paraît dans les colonnes d’une ultime publication de Parapluie. « C’est en peintre que j’ai créé un journal, pour des raisons qui appartiennent à l’histoire et au monde de la peinture : un titre de journal dans un tableau de Braque de 1908, la présence quasi permanente du journal autour duquel Juan Gris centrait sa palette et ses compositions, et aussi parce que, depuis Raoul Hausmann, le caractère typographique tend à devenir une réponse plastique de peintre à la définition de l’image contemporaine. » Henri-Jean Enu‎

A most unusual promotion for an antiquarian book fair! 43.5 by 31.5 cm. 30 cells with cartoon drawings recounting the life of an 100 year old book -- the actual physical object -- from its first sale to its appearance at an antiquarian book fair! The story is in the tradition of "Black Beauty" "The Memoirs of an Umbrella" or "The Yellow Rolls Royce" all concerning the ups and downs incident to different owners and in the case of the latter two there is the commonality of the personification of an inanimate thing. Here the book starts in Barcelona and in its circuitous path that takes it all the way to Paris and the Eiffel Tower and a Seine "bouquinist" comes to rest finally again in Barcelona in a stall at the Feria Annual del Libro de Occasion Antiguo y Moderno still an annual event held by the local booksellers' guild and thus one of the oldest running antiquarian book fairs today. We note that this is a story arc that resembles that of "Black Beauty". The format of the broadside is called "auca" which is an uniquely Catalan graphic format. The captions by Eroles are all three line rhymed couplets in Spanish. In 1972 Eroles wrote and published in Catalan a book on bookselling in Barcelona called "Memoires d'un llibre vell". This memoir relates many important of aspects of the author's life into his own words. Some marks to boards with a bit of edge wear to extremities as well as head and tail of spine. Vol I's gilt on boards is particularly faded. Rubbing to boards as well as raised bands of joints. Vol I's hinges are strained. Vol II's rear hinge is strained. Vol I's paste downs and endpaper are discoloured while the other volumes have a bit of spotting.
