‎Un beau livre au style alerte, vivifié par de nombreux documents, une iconographie souvent inédite et de qualité ; foisonnant d'aperçus originaux, de petits faits curieux et révélateurs, égayé de savoureux portraits. Nous retrouvons ainsi, dans leur vie quotidienne, dix à douze générations de nos ancêtres qui vécurent de la Renaissance à la Révolution. Le tome premier, “La société et l'Etat”, est dû à Pierre Goubert. Il est consacré à la société et aux divers pouvoirs qui l'encadrent. La France d'Ancien Régime, c'est une solide base campagnarde, des terroirs et des seigneuries, une noblesse qui possède des privilèges et des devoirs et ne cesse de se renouveler, des villes avec leurs corps et leurs communautés, leurs bourgeoisies qui sont le véritable rouage du régime. La raison d'Etat guide la classe politique, mais aux forces centralisatrices s'opposent les vivacités régionales. Quant à l'Eglise, elle est dans l'État, comme l'Etat est dans l'Eglise. — Le second tome consacré à “Culture et société”, est de Daniel Roche, à l'exception de la dernière partie qui traite des mutations et de la crise d'où est issue la Révolution et pour laquelle les deux auteurs ont joint leurs talents. Le sacré pénètre toute la vie quotidienne, qu'il s'agisse de la religion ordinaire dans le cadre de la paroisse et des associations de fidèles ou des superstitions, sorcelleries et pratiques magiques que l'Eglise a bien du mal à réduire.
