‎En poste en Tanzanie, c'est là qu'il rencontre ses premiers éléphants. Spécialiste reconnu des questions africaines, il écrit pour le Times, The Economist, et participe aux émissions de la BBC. Son livre, China's Africa Revolution, qui a connu un véritable succès, est aujourd'hui encore la référence pour ce qui concerne les relations politiques, diplomatiques et économiques entre le continent africain et la Chine. Dans les années 1980, il crée une maison d'édition indépendante, Alan Hutchison Ltd, qui, en association avec les musées du monde entier, a publié des livres, des agendas de luxe, des livres d'or et des albums réputés pour la qualité et l'originalité de leur iconographie. L'idée de ce livre lui est venue au dôme de Rimini - le temple Malatesta -, devant, les nombreuses statues et bas-reliefs d'éléphants. Très bon état d’occasion‎
