‎Dessin original au crayon gras, gouache et aquarelle sur papier japon impérial (185 x 217 mm ; recadré 151 x 212), signé au crayon dans le coin inférieur droit ; passe-partout à large encadrement bicolore beige et vert et large filet doré, encadrement de loupe. Format total 295 x 355 mm. Au dos, partie de dessin au crayon et fusin, découpée.‎

‎Mobilisé dès les premiers jours d’août 1914, Paul Jouve rejoint peu après le 2e régiment bis de zouaves oranais ; en octobre 1915, son régiment part rejoindre l’Armée d’Orient à Salonique ; attaché au service photographique de l’armée d’Orient, il peut circuler dans la région et organiser deux Salons d’art, l’un en mai 1916, à Salonique, l’autre à Athènes, intitulé “Des artistes d’Orient” au printemps 1918. Paul Jouve a profité de cette période “exotique” pour réaliser de nombreux dessins et notamment toute une série sur les fameux “buffles macédoniens”.De façon exceptionnelle, ce dessin a été réalisé au dos d’un morceau découpé d’une feuille de papier japon qui, entière, avait servie à dessiner au crayon et fusain le “Tigre dévorant sa proie” (vendu en France en novembre 2014) daté de (19)07; la partie qui est ici représente environ le quart inférieur gauche du dessin entier ; il semble, d’après ce morceau de dessin, que Jouve n’avait pas réussi alors à dessiner correctement la queue de l’animal. ‎Paul Jouve (1878-1973) est sans conteste l'un de nos plus grand artiste animalier. Il aime dessiner d'après nature. Il fréquenta l'école vétérinaire, les abattoirs afin d'y apprendre l'anatomie animale ; il visita régulièrement le jardin des Plantes et de nombreux zoos européens. Passionné par les félins et la faune africaine, il sait rendre vie à ses sujets animaliers et n'hésite pas, bien au contraire, à partir en Afrique du Nord, en Extrême-Orient, pour travailler sur le motif. Des cornacs à dos d'éléphants traversent la rivière des parfums. En 1921, Paul Jouve obtient une nouvelle bourse pour partir en Extrême Orient. Il est séduit par l'architecture, la faune et la flore qui s'entremêlent. Cette gravure est un témoignage de son voyage en Inde du Sud et est tirée d'un portfolio paru aux Éditions Apollo pour la galerie Weill.
