‎210 vignettes sur bois dessinées par Giacomelli Très bel ouvrage de Jules Michelet (1798-1874), publiée en 1856. Ce livre est le premier des quatre chants de ce romantique « poème de la nature » que l écrivain avait rêvé dans sa retraite bretonne. Il sera suivi par l’insecte, la Mer et la Montagne. Le goût de Michelet pour les choses de la nature datait de sa jeunesse et seuls ses grands travaux historiques l'avaient jusqu alors empêché d y répondre. Cette tétralogie n est cependant point l'œuvre d un naturaliste, mais d'un poète : et c'est parce qu il est d abord poète que Michelet, au lieu de voir dans les animaux de simples produits de la nature, y salue de véritables personnes, à peine inférieures à nous, et parfois supérieures. Ainsi nous fait-il admirer l'intelligente ingéniosité du vol de l'oiseau, qui se gonfle pour monter dans l'azur, afin de se faire plus large, donc plus léger, et au contraire, quand il veut tomber, se fait tout petit, étroit, lourd comme une pierre.
