‎Jacques Milbert, peintre, embarqué sur la Corvette le Géographe, pour participer à l’expédition aux terres australes de Nicolas Baudin, il dut quitter le voyage pour raison de santé, il demeura à l’Île-de-France pendant 2 ans, jusqu’au retour de la corvette Le Géographe qui le ramena en France. Il livre le résultat de ses observations, qui touchent à l'administration des gouverneurs La Bourdonnaye et Poivre, au climat, à la géographie, à la population : Esclaves africains, indiens, malgaches, chinois, noirs marrons, sauvages des îles Sandwich, il décrit les sites en détail après avoir sillonné l’île dans tous les sens, donnant une vision vivante et colorée de la société mauricienne.
